New job today and it will be an ongoing thing, old barns that are been converted into a house, they are not allowed to knock it down because it’s on national trust, so we are digging out and putting the sub floors in, then we will get the drainage, treatment plant and all the outside work, shame I’m on a day rate but it’s good work and it pays the bills

I’m only kidding mate, I’ve known her for years, I don’t over charge her she’s always looked after me with bits of jobs in the past so when I’m there doing things like this for them I always do a few bits around the yard as well for free, repairing fences and drinkers, that sort of thing ?

She will be after my bill goes in ?

Well it turns out that the flying chickens love the fresh drilling’s who’d of thought it, not only my birds but next doors too, there was easily 200 of their birds up at the farm, they are wandering further but I’d prefer them to head over the piggeries instead of mixing with next doors, but they will do what they will do and as I can’t be there all the time I’ll just have to accept it anyway, I’ve now got myself a little helper, a lad from the shoot has asked if he can help out with the birds and come out with me so he can get some rifle experience because he wants to put in for his FAC -
Definitely a skill, but I’d questioning the maintenance of the excavator if he can get that track on without undoing the track tensioner ?

Back at the stables today, little list of jobs, ditching in a bottom field for a land drainage problem and then secure some field shelters, last one and went through a water main, what sort of crank puts a main in 18” down in a field ? I was talking to the owner about the horses and she was saying there was over 2.5million quids worth of horses on site and they are charging £250 a week bed and breakfast, it’s only a one woman operation and I worked out she’s pulling in 8k a week without lessons, her bills just gone up ?

Gone for pot roast beef today as the missus was meant to be back from holiday, that might not be the case now because they have diverted the incoming plane and told them a 2 1/2 hour delay at the minute because a cyclone has hit the Canaries, more for me ?

A couple of years ago we gathered a few up and one of the young lads hatched about 20, we ringed them and release them in the old valley pen, a good way from where we shoot now, there was a 20 quid fine to be paid to young joe if you downed one, one day there was 3 shot and he won the sweep, went home with more money in his pocket than anyone else, it showed how far they will wander because they were released far for where they were shot, I think there was 4 shot out of the 20 or so that were released -

Yeah, I take them on a iPhone the missus gave me, I don’t know what model, it’s a red one I’m thinking 20 quid for the black cock, just a bit of daftness and an excuse to walk around the shoot shouting “ has anyone seen my black cock “ ? they are not common but you do see them now and then, they are a good bit smaller than the cock birds, more the size of a hen, there’s a place down the road from us that used to release a few of them and use them in the same way people did with white pheasants to see where their birds were, maybe it’s come from there -
Was given some tomatoes, onions and some foraged mushrooms so just something quick, tomato, onion and garlic sauce with a bit of balsamic vinegar with the mushrooms and tagliatelle pasta, ?

Well it might of been chucking it down but that didn’t seem to bother the flying chickens they were still loving that stubble, they are getting through a lot of feed at Gordon’s pen and I’m starting to see a few more back at the forestry pen after the mental women that were letting their wild dog run round it, I had another woman today on the track letting her fat old lab waddle after them, these people are idiots. When I was over the piggeries I seen one cock bird that was completely black apart from a small amount of green on his head, the guns better bring their wallets because I might put -
Last one of the 3 done, bloody nightmare didn’t get going until gone 12 because it was 2 damp and couldn’t do the front path until my mate had been and scratched off the render, luckily the paths around the house took ages, might be the last big one due to the damp conditions until the spring ?

Home made chicken Kiev, only I rapped it in bacon and covered using panko breadcrumbs, with new spuds and griddle pan asparagus, tasted miles better than it looks ?

Driveway number 2 done, number 3 to be done in the morning ?

Fair play to him, a lad I used to work for used to bet on the horses every day, he had some big wins, I remember him once in the earlier 90’s winning 21grand on a 5 quid accumulator and give me an extra tenner in my pay packet, I also remember him sat in the office of his tyre garage one Saturday when I was working there and he lost over £25k and wasn’t bothered, you could see he was enjoying it even if he lost, he sadly died earlier this year and I went into the tyre place to see his sons and they were telling me the value of his estate to be split between the 3 of them and he was clearly doi

Garlic chicken breast with wholemeal pasta with a tomato, onion and balsamic sauce ( maybe a stew, tomatoes and onions a bit chunky) I’m living like a king whilst she’s doing her best with the buffet dinners in the all inclusive , 4 more days to go and I’ll have to go back to chicken dinners and pie’s when she’s home

Clearly not that lucky, I’d be in tears if I lost 3 quid

Up again this afternoon, autumn is definitely on the way, leaves are a changing, the birds are growing at a fair old rate, still wanting to be on the stubble but that’s been drilled in oats next week which will give me my next problem because they will head for the rape, I went to the bottom of the stubble to walk them in and next doors keeper was sat there in his truck, not been able to get away from me I ask him how he was getting on, “ nightmare “ he said, he can’t keep his birds out my field, I tried to console him with “ ar the know where they live” while trying not to laugh ? -
Venison curry tonight, I got the chilli’s out the father in laws greenhouse, I picked some called apache, they were only small so I left the seeds in and chopped 2 and in they went, two mouthfuls and my eyeballs started to sweat, didn’t stop me finishing it but next time I think I’ll us 1 or at least take the seeds out ? bog roll already in the fridge

A trip up to the shoot for an hour or so this evening, there’s a noticeable change in the weather still nice but definitely a nip in the air when the sun goes down, anyway only seen one fox and that came into a vixen call but didn’t come through the rape enough to present a shot before something spooked it and it was back into the oak wood, there was a lot of deer about tonight, mainly fallow doe but I did see one prickett and a roe buck, I think I counted 14 in all and that’s some good numbers for my little patch, I hope forestry don’t hammer them come November but I think I know the answer t
