I'm Secretary of a club at Bisley so I shoot there a lot, and my .223 is a Tikka T3 Lite. 600 yards is about all the way for the .223, although I do know a few people who use it quite regularly at 600. I was happy enough when I got the first one on the "board" at 600, it is a f*****g long way, and was just having a bit of fun, I usually target with it at 200 and sometimes 300 and rarely push it past 200 hunting!

155-310 Metres (ish) is getting a bit on the long side for everyday .223 whichever way you want to look at it. ALL the hunting tools are going to give you very similar performance. I know nothing of the laws over there and you make no mention of your type of Varmint, but May I suggest you think about 22-250 anyway which will give you the edge in accuracy (and stopping power) over these distances!

There is no answer as this is such a personal thing...I know one guy who insists on using 24X on his 12ft lb Air rifle to shoot rabbits at 20 yards!!! I think that's  but he likes it!! The distances you mention really are about the max you would expect to use a .223 for tops! I tend to use 6X on most of my scopes from Air rifle to Centrefire, day and night, target and hunting right up to about 200 yards. Only put the .223 through its paces at 600 yards at Bisley the once, but I seem to recall I was up to about 14X. As has largely been said, optical quality and light transmi

We all make mistakes and we all have to ask questions... Yes ..you will need a cabinet, and good reason and land and potentially a lot more You will have to justify your requirement, show good character, not have a criminal record (certain offences) or questionable medical history, its simple and fairly obvious really. One thing though, if you want a FAC: when you get your home visit from the FEO/FLO (whatever they want to call themselves in your area), don't say I've had lots of experience shooting Game birds in February with an Air Rifle!! There are various laws concerning shooting birds at night wether they be Game Birds or vermin species. Suffice to say there are plenty of legal ways to cover just about all your night shooting. The important wording is LAMPING (artficial light from just about any source). Lamping is NOT allowed for almost everything in the bird world.

Hi Ben,if you can,t shoot your quarry humanley why take the shot???To bring the power "up a bit" i would,nt recommend it unless you have a FAC as it could get you into all sorts of problems if you get your collar felt off the police .As for shooting pheasents with a airgun Deker has put up a topic on here WHAT CAN I SHOOT WITH A AIRGUN might be worth a look at And a quick look at Game Seasons which Ian B has pinned in the Rimfire/Centrefire/Shotguns section as well

Well done...good bit of craft! Always great when the plan comes together and the greys can be crafty buggers! Got to admit I'm getting lazy these days, given the chance I just let go with a 12g and number 5's. Problem solved instantly in one go! Seems like cheating really but it is effective! Cheers Deker

this is in the rimfire centerfire and shotgun section not air rifle It was a simple enquiry ..if you intend to answer one third of it with a crass response what about the other two thirds...I seem to recall a 16g is a shotgun and a .222 a centrefire rifle.

With an OPEN certificate the land does not have to be "cleared" for ANY calibre. Neither do you need WRITTEN permission from the owner, although we all know that is always very useful. It will be down to the certificate holder to decide, for whatever calibre they have on their OPEN FAC wether the land is suitable or not.
-
Can always be interesting to see peoples reactions although this one shouldn't be too complicated. I'm curious though, your list is extensive but within it, no sign of 16g which is certailny used a bit, and if you are up to .223 why no .222. Also, no mention of the air rifle, they take vast numbers of rabbit every year!!!! Probably one or two more as well. Cheers

It's all edible, my Game dealer wants them paunched but then sells them with everything else still in. Up to you if you eat them, give them to the cat or dump them!

Home Office Firearms Law Guidance to Police 2002 Exemptions from the requirement to hold a certificate Shot Guns 1968 Act Section 11(5) of the 1968 Act allows an individual, without holding a shot gun certificate, to borrow a shot gun from the occupier of private premises and use it on those premises in the occupiers presence. The presence of the occupier is normally taken to mean within sight and earshot of the individual borrowing the firearm. Rifles 1968 Act Section 16.1 of the Act enables a person to borrow a rifle from the occupier of private premises an

You guys never had it so good......back in 1987 (yep -- 21 years ago) the firm I worked for at the time got a bill for just over £1000 for my CAR phone one month! That was as close as we got to a mobile phone then! For some strange reason they were not very happy! Deker

Where the F**k did that s**t come from? So far the only thing I have said in response to Compos post is........ Hi Compo You mean something like "I got a caution for ABH in 2005" Perhaps?? YOU NEED TO GET YOUR HEAD LOOKED AT seems apparent you do have some issues! I know F**k all about you except what you said........ Any advice greatly apreciated, I got a caution for ABH in 2005 and some minor stuff when I was younger (when I was "advised to withdraw my application" for fighting and being a normal 20 something male?? More I hear though the less chance you have of get

Do you get good money per carcass? Nice deer though..Havnt been out your way yet but will be soon to get a few of those mini deer... That picture kind of reminds me of a girl i used to know!!! Money wise I get £1 per 1lb weight after it is cleaned and skinned and delivered to my Game Dealer (head off, boots off as well). Private and Restaurant sales pay £2 per 1lb weight. Still a lot less than my Game Dealer sells the stuff for!

Guys...thanks for all that which I knew anyway...the term used was "Never attach the apparatus directly to the barrel" Answer is, for general hunting its not a good idea, but if you are a useless shot it will probably be better anyway, in controlled environment where all else remains equal its not a problem! Its just the term NEVER is very final and I recall a film......"Never say never again" I still don't understand all the formulas quoted earlier so just attach the Bipods etc to the stud! Took an awful long time to get here didn't it!
-
Why is it I always forget to take the deer pics out in the field, guess its just because I take them apart too quick! Anyway, just before I carted her off to the dealer, and she was a big girl! Next time I'll try and remember to take the before picture! Deker

They make several and in principle you should find them all a bit cheaper than HMR! Have a word with your local dealer and ask what he stocks.
-
Everyones skills, needs, desires, permissions, ideas are different.....in the light of this I would get a .22WMR, that suits me best for all my land and the results expected of me. Many will say the .17HMR and others may well say something else, sometimes there are no right answers ...suck it and see as they say!
-
Me again...help clarify the one in red please. Fixing a Bipod etc to many guns effects the POI. If we assume the ammo remains constant and the surface the bipod is resting on remains constant and the gun is zeroed to this point why will the POI not remain constant as the oscillation should remain constant, or am I missing something? Thanks Deker

Interestingly, the answer, if we are looking at ONE gun may not be on the list....could well be a 12g with tight chokes!
