  1. .......and be even more careful when you start to get curious about downrange energy!
  2. What is the connection between supersonic, loud = cheap?
  3. You seem to have missed the point, and where have I said I can't get within 120 yards of a rabbit, I outlined the problem of a particular site, and just where have I put off the .22lr? If you and your daughter find stalking so easy in ANY environment why are you using a .22lr, why not a 12ft lb, or if you are that good at it why not just stalk up to them and hit them with a club? Edit, and at 120 yards I'll take a HMR any time over a .22lr, I don't do this to prove a point, or test myself, I take every advantage reasonably available.
  4. A not uncommon feature of cheaper scopes. This should not happen on any scope of reasonable quality.
  5. Correct, and then when all the close ones have been shot and what's left are nervous you need a HMR! Or learn to stalk. A lot of folk managed with just a .22lr and crap ammo back in the day. And a lot of guys only use an air rifle. A lot of people have lost touch with stalking and would rather find a rabbit lie down and take it long range. I love the thrill of stalking a rabbit it's great fun and tests your skills SD, we used stones, spears and bows and arrows as well, I shoot a major size, flat, and very well managed Private sports ground, it has 6 full size football pitches and
  6. His crazy distance shots are at clays. If he shoots pigeons at 100yards and misses or pricks them, then he leaves himself wide open for criticism!
  7. Apparently the rabbit that led to this thread was 23 yards, others mentioned were at 63m (or 69 yards), which by any standard is a ******* long way for anyone in the field with a 12ft lb. George Digweed is exceptional, but he still misses sometimes, and he is shooting at Clays. If you want to push the boundaries try paper. I have used my HMR at 600 yards at Bisley, but I wouldn't be trying it on a fox at that distance. ATB!
  8. That will be because you are either scared of your HMR or you don't have a use for it. There is a much bigger picture out there, and plenty of people do have a use for a HMR on bunnies!
  9. Correct, and then when all the close ones have been shot and what's left are nervous you need a HMR!
  10. I take your point Matt, and personally although I consider myself a pretty decent shot, I would not attempt a shot at 60 yards with a sub 12 air rifle, I have never met Simon (the op) but it is my understanding that he is a quite extraordinary good shot with his spring rifles, and has devoted many many hours practice to attain the standard he has reached, an air rifle hovering around the legal limit certainly has the energy to kill cleanly at 60 yards and probably much further, as I seem to recall it requires only around 2ftlbs energy to kill a rabbit cleanly with a shot to the head,so I think
  11. Shooting it in the heart does not destroy the nervous system, so heart/lung shots need to be accurate and precise and immediately catastrophically effective, or any animal (person) will be able to function and feel for however long before they are brain dead. Brain dead is the point at which death is generally accepted as occurring. Those tiny bundles of fluff bunnies do seem to dance about more readily after what would appear to be a very effective head shot, and that isn't just with a 12 ft lb, I have destroyed bunnies heads with more powerful tools and still seen this phenomenon, it
  12. i'd like to keep it short for passing around in the land rover without muzzling my mate, also for walking through woods ect, Just be careful with the balance, I had a WMR cut to about 15.5" and I never felt comfortable with it, my new one I had cut to about 19", even with a mod that feels nicely balanced to me. Each to their own. ATB!
  13. We are back to SAK then! They really have got a little gem in that mod, but if over barrel, and length is REALLY important, then someone will have to spend a lot to save the odd inch or two, or should I say 25-50mm?!
  14. As long as it's to be used for sub sonic ammo, nobody can really argue with that, the difference is marginally more pronounced with HV ammo, but I still wouldn't lose any sleep trying to find the quietest.
  15. The Sako mod is good in my opinion, certainly just has the edge on the Sirocco and Sak, about the same price as a Sirocco, but not a lot of use to you if you want to keep things short. Sako Sirocco SAK
  16. A CZ at half the price will continue to produce the goods for years. No need to make excuses for buying a gun you fancy! Why the 14" barrel specifically? Why are you trying to keep this very short, there are plenty of Better, and often much cheaper mods than a Whisper,
  17. You have a selective memory, vivid imagination, make inaccurate statements and then blame others for your shortcomings. The floor is yours, I'm bored with you!
  18. No assumptions on ballistics Deker. Find yourself "The Book of the .22" published in the 1950's and you'll find a book of detailed ballistic gel testings running to 100's of pages on every single .22 round in existence at that time shot with high speed cameras at millisecond intervals, and then you can see for yourself the differences between terminal performance of different rounds from .22 short right up through .22 Hornet. These are not like many of the amateur high speed gel photos you see on the web where the frame doesn't necessarily refelct the pinnacle of the rounds performance, bu
  19. Is there no end to your guesswork, assumption and internet ramblings?!
  20. He needs to know that this happens sometimes, and from what I can make of this he hasn't caused the bunny any pain or suffering, it was dead with the first shot, there is nothing to get upset about. If he had shot it up the arse it may have been a different matter, but he didn't.
  21. You would do us all a favour if you stopped reading so much and actually got a rifle and tried shooting, you would soon find that not everything you read is correct! Like it or not, some of us have been doing this for many years, but you will find few, if any, suggest we are experts, you never stop learning in this game. The difference is, many here have actually been out and gained a lot of experience of numerous guns, ammo, calibres, quarry, effects, etc over the years. Unlike some who have been out with a mate once or twice and fill their head with interweb articles.
  22. The brain had gone into overdrive as mentioned in an earlier post, sending out random messages all over the place, it was dead, hence why 3 further shots made little or no difference, you can't kill something again when it is already dead! Which is why if you break the neck and sever the communication lines between brain and body, it will stop! Indeed , but in the technicalities of this thread it is already dead, so you are not killing it again. Lord knows how/why but I have shot, killed, cleaned, skinned, head and boots off rabbits before, totally ready for the pot and in a c
  23. Thank you for confirming everything I said, especially the bit about a FMJ. No .22lr FMJ, what are you talking about, FMJ is simply a wide term for a lead bullet coated in another metal, there are plenty of solid, copper coated .22lr around, " Sorry but that's incorrect. An FMJ ot TMJ is a bullet wrapped in thin copper or other metal sheet which is then bonded to the inner lead core Just which part of my comment is incorrect? Are you seriously trying to make something of the words bonded and coated in relation to the speed/heat/energy of a .22lr.? What planet are you
  24. As above, scope, reticles, magnification, objective size, etc., etc., is way to personal. Get what suits you. Personally I would say be careful of scope weight on a air rifle, other than that its down to you.
  25. To even the balance a little as there are several here who don't have a good word for Hawke. For most people in most situations they are fine. I had one which got replaced, but I currently have, and use, 4 different Hawke scopes, for the majority of work Hawke are perfectly adequate, and I have no need/plans to replace/upgrade the four I currently use. If you want to dial in a lot then perhaps you need to invest more, but as regards holding zero then mine are fine. ATB!
