  1. For someone who doesn't care you are making a lot of fuss and creating a false impression. Bar-stool and internet lawyers, don't you just love them. Yes chap, an awful lot of people here and elseware value my comments and help. I have resolved many Police/Firearms issues for many people over many years, commonly pointing out where inept FEO/Regions have it wrong. You have no idea about my situation/background/experience or Police/Home Office relations. You have been given accurate information which you flatly refuse to accept and appear to want to crawl on your bel
  2. I don't need to, it was you who suggested N Wales don't/won't, all my rimfires (inc.22lr) are ALQ, so I don't have to question anyone. If someone in N Wales wants Fox then Vermin/ALQ on their FAC covers it, end of, it doesn't have to say fox, read my posts, it doesn't matter what N Wales "say", if they give you Vermin/ALQ and do not specifically exclude fox they don't have a leg to stand on! If they flatly refuse any suggestion of fox then ask the BASC to sort it. For someone who doesn't care you are making a lot of fuss and creating a false impression.
  3. With all due respect someone needs to challenge them, the Home Office (in simple terms the Police regions Head Office) says the HMR is fine for fox, who is a regional office to argue/question/go against a Head Office ruling? To what end though? Whether we like it or not we're all subject to the arbitrary policy decisions of individual Chief Constables, ranging from calibre suitability, ammunition quantity allowed to be held, and a myriad of other idiosyncrasies. Calibre suitability will always be subjective, even between shooters (as this thread demonstrates), it's hardly surprising to se

  7. Well, seems I'm going against the flow here, I like it, and looks a superb job as well!
  8. I use rimfires and the .22lr regularly against the fox. When used appropriately it is easily capable and often the calibre I reach for! Why wouldn't it work at your stated 40yards and/or what would be your preference for fox control at that distance?
  9. The latest Home Office guide lists HMR and WMR as Fox suitable, also the .22lr in appropriate circumstances!
  10. Generally I'm with you there. Even though I'm Secretary of a Home Office Approved Fullbore Club at Bisley, my main reason for target is zeroing for the field, hence why most of my target it 100 or 200 yards. We tend to shoot the longer distances a couple of times a year, but I have to say there is a certain grin factor about a V-Bull at 1000 yards. Put another way, that is like a Roe headshot at 1000! (to stop the debate before it starts, I have never tried a Roe anything like that far.)
  11. This beastie, broadly a custom build and .308! It belongs to our Clubs Team GB shooter, and I believe I am correct in saying he had it built somewhere in the midlands, Nightforce on top, and I think most of us were using around 24x Mag!
  12. I run the P8 COMPACT on all my centrefires but the new Evolution seems fine on a pals .223. Not sure how it would fare on larger calibres, but smaller and lighter than the P8 Compact, also a little cheaper!
  13. If you are running .22 under 12ft lb, I'm not sure what an overpowered .177 has got to do with the issue? I would suspect, just the same, the problem is pellet related, but taking the mod off and checking the crown are sensible steps. As a side issue, I quite rate the AA Field but my FAC Falcon prefers the 5.51 to the 5.52.
  14. To be honest I'm a little confused by the OP and some responses! Have you tried the 5.51 AA Field (I think I am right in saying they packed up the 5.50 some years ago) Have you tried other pellets? Have you resolved the problem yet? Cheers
  15. 1000 yard shoot today, bit windy but fun, 5 x V-Bulls out of my 10 shots after 2 sighters! My club is fortunate to have a Team GB shooter who is already looking forward to the Canada Tour next year, there is no doubt that using one of his rifles is quite useful. The trigger is very light as you can imagine, but even I managed 5 down the throat with a rifle/scope/trigger I'm not used to! For reference, this is 1000Yards.... This is the target section enlarged, just high and left of centre of pic above. Few of the others on 1000 yards today, including a few Black Powder
  16. This debate could run and run, as far as I'm concerned if you don't like the HMR for fox then don't use it, but don't tell the world it isn't up to the job. You don't know any/everyone elses abilities, experience or circumstances. I do this for a living, one area is getting rid of foxes in peoples gardens, it is a regular job for me, I don't remember the last time I used a centrefire, and I have NEVER missed one or had it run off. Please don't tell me I don't know what I am doing, it seems I have a far more open mind and far more experience than many commentators here, or they woul
  17. Strikes me you have a very narrow view and very little experience, either or both, and/or simply can't shoot straight! There is a lot of argument... and you check distance and wind drift with EVERY calibre, or do you believe that is only necessary with rimfires?!! What is a fox calibre, who are you to decide, I shoot loads of foxes with rimfires of all sorts and they work, so they are a fox calibre...right! Don't give me this bull that you need a centrefire, and don't come out with some crap about a dedicated fox calibre. I have shot fox with virtually everything between
  18. You have seen above distances suggested between 23-40 yards, which is precisely why I always say....... you zero at the distance that works for YOU, your rifle, pellets, quarry or target!
  19. Depending on how many guns you have then you could fit the thing sideways or even muzzle down, that can create space. The fact is most people use deep or extra deep safes for scoped rifles!
  20. How long have you been shooting, what sort of competition/target work do you aspire to, how many deer stalks have you participated in?? I'm not sure why you have this fixation on 7.62, there are plenty of .308 target rifles, why are you suggesting "7.62 is as good as getting a .308 as an all round deer rifle" it isn't, .308 is a better choice. If you really want target and just one rifle, then simply get a .308, and use that for deer with the large ammo selection available. But, Stalking rifles are not target rifles, walk around for a while with a target 7.62 or .308 over your sh
  21. To the OP. There are certainly options for 7.62 deer legal bullets, but the 7.62 was/is a military round which stemmed out of the .308. So using a 7.62 for deer, especially a target rifle, would not be many peoples first choice, and what sights/scope do you have on it? So, you have options, but personally, as others have said, just get another calibre (whatever suits) for the deer and keep your 7.62 for target!
  22. Nato 5.56 is higher pressure than .223. .308 is higher pressure than 7.62. So, theoretically you can shoot .223 in a 5.56 and 7.62 in a .308, (although some will also give you a debate about marginal differences in brass size) but doing it the other way isn't a great idea. Frankly I don't care how many people do, or want to, as long as I'm nowhere near them, just in case!
  23. The HMR easily has the efficiency to stop a fox at 200 yards, as regards its effective range, that comes down to the person holding the rifle, few would say anything much over 100 yards. If I'm after fox and know they will be 150yards or more then I would never grab the HMR as first choice, but I don't have an issue taking them at that distance if the circumstances warrant it and the situation is right, this went down at 130 yards last week with the HMR, everything was right and I was confident in the shot, I would have been no more confident if I was using a .243! Of course headshots
  24. I understand (although I have no personal experience) that the newer versions have addressed some of the earlier versions issues. First hand personal experience says they needed to, the early ones suffered from poor design, poor quality control and poor manufacturing tolerances, they were seriously ammo fussy, jammed regularly, fell apart and dangerous!
