  1. Still baffled why nobody uses springer spaniel in lurchers, with regards to daytime hunting/mooching mine would have put most collie lurchers to shame
  2. My first ever dog was a whippet, bought off a lady who was well known in the show ring, she got reserve best at crufts, the highest place a whippet had ever done back then. I didn’t get him to work, I was just a lad, but he naturally hunted rabbits and I never looked back. He was more stocky and deep chested compared to a lot you see now. I was out all hours with him lamping ferreting and generally just slipping him on any rabbits I saw .....he only ever got one skin tear, he must have had quite good skin compared to my whippet lurcher because her skin Is like tissue paper. He was also could
  3. Looks a cracker......did you fancy a change?
  4. I are across a litter other day on Facebook......no bitches though....massive deep chest on dam n sire......either £400 or £600 can’t remember.
  5. You gave him a great life. RIP Bryn.
  6. You tried Facebook..........always seems to be someone with a litter.....a lot on there seem to have them as pets....so you may need to pick wisely
  7. Loved reading his articles when I was a young lad. What made me think he was a postman?
  8. Christ....I bet they can hunt
  9. If I get another lurcher in the future I would like spaniel in the mix for sure. Having it in the mix exceeded my expectations.....most lurchers I’ve had are happy to just walk the path....she’d be everywhere except the path sniffing and looking always busy plotting her next move. Might be tempted to get a smaller type in the future though....maybe a spaniel x terrier or something. These days everybody just wants to stick there nose in everybody else’s business when your out with the lurchers......too many do gooders.
  10. Thank you all for your kind words. Lots of great memories to reflect on.
  11. IHello all......Just back from the vets. My spaniel x lurcher has unfortunately passed away. I decided to take the dogs on a little walk this afternoon to take my mind off my grandads death who died Friday morning ( he’d had a good life at 94). I’ve been teaching myself about edible mushrooms very recently and was just having a forage on the wood floor when she screamed out yelping. She came over to me holding her right leg up, I’ve known her do this before and after a rest she’s running around again. I gave her a check over and a rest and once she was able to hold her weight again we continue
  12. Mine was advertised as greyhound x springer, but it wasn’t, definitely a smooth haired lurcher, i think there will have been a smidgen of bull and god knows what else in there. It was an accidental mating with a game keepers bitch springer. She’s lovely natures dog, very soft.....too soft mouthed for squirrels really...she can’t half hunt though...and she’s clever with it too.
  13. I just go on a nice walk and she just hunts what takes her fancy, it always edible.....rabbits, squirrels, pheasant....she does catch other things, but I never go seeking them out these days.
  14. My bitch is working springer x lurcher....certainly less than half sighthound. The only teeth she come across are squirrels.
  15. Tyla.....lovely looking dogs...what’s the breeding of the dog on right?
  16. No....it’s great to hear about your dogs and choices. I did remember you were having a bit of a hiccup with one your dogs ( I think you said he was the type everyone said they could be like...if that makes sense) and you might consider a gundog type breed. I often think what I will be getting next, I know a spaniel x whippet would be hard to come by. I not bothered about speed, I’m quite happy if most of them get away, it’s more about me just enjoying my time out watching the dog work and having that good working bond. God knows what I’ll end up with.
  17. It’s breed that’s always intrigued me probably due to lamping ferreting and bushing with border collies when I was younger, had a bitch and a dog. The bitch was an incredible busher/hunter of rabbits, the male was very handy too, but a bit more laid back than the bitch.....that’s when I found out I preferred one hard earned rabbit to ten easy ones. Going to have your hands full.....lots of fun though.
  18. That sounds like what I do these days, mooching with a flask of tea, rucksack and catapult. I must admit Im a bit soft these days and tend not to kill much with the catapult, unless I fancy putting something on the menu for myself. My dogs however are squirrel mad. The springer lurcher has caught more squirrels than the rest of the dogs I’ve had over the past 35 years put together....Christ knows what she’d be like if I started dropping them for her. It never stops amazing me how the squirrels can be totally safe from the dogs, but then you get the odd one that panics, runs down the trunk
  19. These powerful bands must affect your accuracy. I was just shooting .5 black on one catapult and .5 yellow on the other, my accuracy was more consistent on the yellow which is lighter a draw. There’s definitely a trade off between the two for me. It’s surprised me how much the bands draw weight was causing me to miss.
  20. I’ve also got a bed/whippet x collie/grey/whip.....small skinny looks the part.....she’s a lovely bitch but not a patch on my other and the amount of skin tears just from catching herself on old branches is scary. If you enjoy a daytime mooch and appreciate watching a dog happily working for fun then I’d say go for it. Id love another in maybe five years. I know it will be hard to find one though. I loved my whippet, he was small and hard, I’m not so keen on these taller types I see a lot of today. He was a bloody good worker. However my spaniel lurcher gives me much more in a similar sized
  21. I scratch my head often wondering why gundogs aren't used more frequently in lurcher breeding. That spaniel x lurcher of mine astonishes me. Perfect mooching dog, especially for me who appreciates watching a dog hunt. Easy to live with, doesn’t bugger off for hours, very good companion. Good coat and feet. I don’t cover the same quantity of ground I used to with my lurchers due to my health, but she covers more ground hunting than my other lurchers used to when I was fit. I’ve never been into catching loads, but get my kicks just catching one for the pot and getting more of my kicks from watc
  22. I have the scout lt and occularis.....but the clips on that although the same as the scout lt they don’t function as well...oh and I have the torque as well....(they twist when tightening which is a pain) all by simple shot. Mine never ever failure at the clip end. However I have had the band sneak out of the occularis even when done correctly......that was with ,5 ish band, never had it with thicker bands. If your not familiar with the occularis there’re not the usual clips....more of a bung. Unless a natural I would personally prefer clips given the choice as long as the function well.
  23. Funny you mention Manchester terrier. I sometimes have a walk near a reservoir a few miles from me and twice I’ve seen this fella with two dogs on their leads. They look like Manchester terriers, but they’re not and for some reason in my mind they look like what I would imagine some kelpie whippets would to look like....bit like sleights purdys progress dogs.
