  1. I think he was what you could consider a sly poacher... He has since passed away, but such a character. I remember his nets looked like old string things like he tied the holes together. He had an old jack russell x something too, it would lay across his feet in the pub and have half a bitter to itself FF
  2. An old bloke near me used to have his ferret in a bank bag sown in his jacket and a pocket in the back for nets and carried the rabbits in his arms of the jacket. FF
  3. One of mine got on the skinny side a few months back... found out she had a tiny bit a pheasant bone stuck in her teeth at the back. Removed it now shes all good FF

  8. Always put him in with 1 jill first then leave it a couple a weeks to see if she gets pregnant. Rather than put him across all at once and get 50 kits FF
  9. Ive got a 2 year old jack russell... But i dont have a ratting perm. Before i try to find one, is there anyone close by who could possibly take me and my dog to see if he is any good at it please, as not to embarrass myself and the dog if i did get a perm. He does show good signs of shaking and abit of a dislike for furry things. I know its a long shot but got to have faith in people. Cheers all FF
  10. Nice write up and a well worked day too... the pub... i remember going in them. Its getting harder on my perm. Someone said it could be my ferrets not working the warren properly! Could it be that? Ive had good numbers before this season. FF

  16. I have noticed a new badger track and a latrine near my permission and also more fox signs too... might have something to do with rabbits moving around abit... Or they really smart and they know to do some craps and dig near the holes they aint in (so muggins here ferrets them) then go to an old looking warren to live. FF
  17. Yes... went out sunday morning. All good signs, fur, fresh dark droppings and scrapes and my dogs marked the holes... (9 hole warren) Netted and ferrets in... nothing out after 25 mins. It was like this on 2 warrens then we hit the big warren 40+ holes and had 6 rabbits. FF

  20. Cheers guys... It was only going to be a one off thing just to get her out... I have a finder and collar and a spare collar so putting it on her now to get used to. Hopefully will work. I do respect the season and am looking forward to the start of it, but i think its going to be abit later this year... The rabbits are doing really well this year on my perm, so im sure she'll enjoy it when we do get out. FF
  21. Started that i couldnt afford one... Then when i got one the ferret didnt like wearing it... would work the holes properly. She comes back to a squeaky dog toy normally. And a kiss at the hole entrance. Touch wood ive not had to dig one out yet... Had to get a long bramble once and feed it down the hole backwards to twist on rabbits fur to pull out. Been lucky really. FF

Ive only ferreted 2 seasons over the winter, and its great fun and very rewarding. We have had 273 rabbits and a mouse. I have not ferreted in summer and would like to know if there is anything different to do... Ie, Is there likely to be more digging? (This could be a problem as warrens are deep and in sandy soil) Young rabbits? Collar or no collar? (I dont use o
