I don't think he has any ambition to run the conservative party. Why would he? In the past maybe I don't know, but I think he's fairly aware of the public distrust/dislike of the labour and conservative lot especially whilst surrounded by reform, I also imagine an added bonus of defectors is it's a knife in the side of the Tory party who shunned or mocked him.
