There’s deer and there’s deer, big difference from a dainty little roe or CWD & a big fallow buck or red. I’m sure if someone had taken the larger species with a pure saluki it would’ve been well documented

Sorry but you are mistaken, I will explain why in my next post.

Firstly let me state that I have always like the herding dog crossbreeds, even for hares.

But I have owned Pure saluki dogs and I have imported them from the middle east back in the 70s.

Let me state here and now for the doubters that pure salukis have coursed and caught Fallow[Hampshire] Sika[Dorset] and Fallow, Red in Norfolk/Suffolk. In the day!

They have also done the Red deer on Scottish moors at night in 1990/91.

I just don't get where people get these silly ideas from on what's been done or hasn't.                                                                                                                             You need to remember a lot of people were running all British quarry before a lot of you were born, we didnt take video's as we never had the equipment, you needed to be the bbc for that-lol.                                                                                       Nor did we photo them, both were just evidence for various from police to the ALF.

There are a few things people forget, in the 1980s we could go out at 8pm, drive somewhere and start lamping and walking and stay out till 7am with out issue from Dorset to Caithness, and west to east the same.

Game keepers had their pint and supper and were in bed by 9pm, ready to get up early to do dogs and rounds, farmers were not much different. Police would not come out into the fields, too risky.

Things have changed and did so starting in the nineties with Mobile phones, first night vision and later thermal vision, game and river keepers, land owners, sporting syndicate members and nature reserve wardens all have access to these thing as do the police.

No the days of us having free access all night has long gone and sadly most of the perpetrators wont be here much longer. At the same time the days of getting permission of an estate owner to course deer in the day have gone, no one wishes to risk losing the arable area aid or single farm payment etc, and that can so easily happen with modern phones and video recorders etc and the fact its illegal.

I could go on but do not wish to upset too many people, but we did kill a lot more than people realise.

I find it funny myself that lads are discrediting greyhound blood even though their dogs are a minimum 1/4 greyhound, doesn't matter how much you line bred it's still in em and has to be be given credit for bringing something to the table.

mine isn’t 1/4 grey mate the quarter will be grey collie terrier making the quarter up

There would be no "lurchers" without the greyhound as the base breed.

Yes, ok, any sight hound could be the base breed for a "lurcher", but the greyhound gives the basic necessity of speed.

Thats why people crossed collies, Beddy, bull, Saluki , Whippet, deerhound, whatever, with Greyhound, to put the speed into the mix.

There wouldn't be any " coursing types" if men hadn't crossed greyhounds and Salukis.

The holy grail was to breed a dog with the speed of the greyhound and the stamina of the saluki, which has damn near been achieved !

The coursing type is now almost breeding true to type, but no one should ever knock the influence the Greyhound has had on all lurcher breeding.

Cheers.
