I understand the theory behind it but money talks and it's what makes the world go around. But if you are a proper dog man then making sure they go to working homes should be the upmost priority as you can use the dogs in your breeding programme and track the progress on each animal.

Wow so if you get a dog for free its a worker and if you pay for a dog it's crap? That's about the dumbest thing ive ever heard! And over the last couple years being on here ive seen some of you so called hard dog men selling one! If i don't know you why should i give you a free dog when i wouldn't even give you the sweat off my balls for free. So im supposed to raise that pup give it shots, dock the tail and maybe dews and feed it and socialize it then give it to someone for nothing. Sorry if your not a friend or faimly memeber your not taking my pup for free. And if i know my dog's are coming off of good honest workers ill pay for it rather then take it for free and be in debt latter in life with the breeder.  and  for the ones that say they will gift there dog's let me know what you got maybe I'll take it.?

I suppose you yanks are use to paying for dogs you bought enough shite and bullshit pedigrees from over here over the years .like i said most genuine lads gift pups to like minded mates

JMHO but terriermen seem to be the only doggy folk who debate the selling of pups, and that might say a lot for us.

The lurcher brigade churn them out and with a bit of luck their pup wont see 5 homes by the time it's 2 years old. The K.C. can double that. They have nothing to be proud off.

But terriermen do often seem to take pride in placing their pups in good hands where they might get good feed back on their progress thus giving the breeder more info on how his breeding is going. Obviously we have our puppy peddlers but after a year or two of them churning out their curs they don't be long becoming a laughing stock. Although the novices to our sport don't see it and do leave a few quid with the chancers.

The truth is that well bred litters bred by lads who are genuine get snapped up by the breeders mates and what sort of f****r charges a mate for a pup ??????????? But every now and then good pups do actually come on the market .

As for price ????? Well IMO if the Border of today is making £550 a pup and Plummers are making £300 a pup then a good well bred black one or well bred Russell should have a price tag of £2000. And I mean that.

The lurcher brigade lol  some statement

I don't care if a dogs been gifted or I payed for it... If its not up to the job and walks then its pts, f**k the money....(can't understand why certain folks want them back mind?) If its a pup and unspoilt then I'd let it go to someone tidy for a small fee..... I don't begrudge tidy lads charging for pups(sometimes easier than taking a freebie imo) . In truth the few I have been gifted been dirt last few seasons, had my best through breeding myself or bought in off genuine men getting out the game..... Gifted them out only to have my pants pulled down further down the line... I believe you give it to them for free then they don't give two fucks, do as they please,...... Look at the threads that been put up of late on here?...... Multiple story's and lies, sly litters etc......and it's happened to good lads been in the game along time..... So no one's impervious no matter who you are.

If its of decent stuff with a history of producing and the lad seems genuine then why not €300-€500 is probably the price most will pay and it for obvious reasons there not in closed circles  then the option of been gifted is not always there. I wouldn't knock a lad either for selling surplus pups but the other side is lads do seem ta have that extra few left over every 6 months.

I bought a Russel bitch off a very well known and respected terrier man . Who was in Yorkshire at the time . He didn’t need to advertise this litter and I felt lucky to get a pup off him . He charged me £200 and I would have gladly paid more . When you consider that he wasn’t a mate , but someone who was a friend of a friend , he owed me nothing! It came docked and jabbed , and had been well socialised. That money was nothing for a dog of that quality . The bitch had turned out to be an excellent worker . I’ve got no complaints paying for her . I’m planning on having a litter with her and when she has pups , I will charge mates enough to cover my vet bills , and anyone else about £200.00 . And I’ve already got folk asking for a pup out of her . But it’s not to make money it’s because I want a pup myself. I wouldn’t risk the bitches health otherwise. Plus I will get satisfaction hearing if the pups make the grade . But my motivation will not be money.

The way I see it, if it's your passion and you're serious about the job, you'll never think about money to be made. If you want to make money, go to work. That's my view, I have no problem with lads selling or buying pups, but from experience, the lies and bullshit don't rear their ugly head until there's money involved.

100% agree with you here. I wouldn’t care if I hadn’t an arse in my trousers I wouldn’t sell a dog. The way i look at it if I don’t trust a lad enough to gift him a pup I definitely wouldn’t be selling him one
