waltjnr 6,520
Mad Jack Churchill? Think I've got that right, went into to battle with sword and bow, bagpipes playing, his exploits are pretty heroic!
Neal 1,854
Would have to be my grandad...he Was at Dunkirk then fought in Italy and North africa But he wasn't one of these people who think there superior or deserve something because of what they did in the military Jacknife, Like you my grandad was also at Dunkirk and then Italy and North Africa. He didn't talk about it much but whenever he did, he tried to put a humorous slant on it: like telling us he'd lost his leg in the war even though all his grandchildren could remember him in the early 80s with two legs. He made up so many stories that it wasn't until I studied geography at A level that I discovered Abu Dhabi was a real place! However, my favourite true story was told to us during the late 80s after he went on holiday to Spain with my nan. As they were boarding the plane a blind gentleman in a wheelchair being pushed along in front of him asked, "Is that you Jack?" He'd trod on a mine out in the desert which had left him blind and without the use of his legs and my granddad had carried him all the way back to camp over God knows how many miles of desert and the chap had recognised his voice over forty years later. My other heroes are my kids. I know a lot of people try to live their lives again via their kids but I often say to them, "When I grow up I want to be just like you."
