keepdiggin 9,567
socks, i'm full of respect for people but if they start being a bit of twat with me I lose respect for that person. I hear what your saying and if it works for you good on you.

NEWKID 27,872
All parenting is tricky and there's no right or wrong IMO... With my girl now 15, I admit I am too protective, although I know she needs her freedom more and it's slowly being given.. She's seeing a lad at school, and he's been round a few times, good manners and helps out when around, the little ones think he's great... Me I'm not sure, to nice IMO.. Is it a front?... Time will tell, I'm friendly but agree with socks, I won't be his best mate
Brewman 1,192
I have 2 daughters under 5 and am apprehensive for the future to be honest. Probably scared myself by reading articles on what teenage boys expect to get off girls especially as they've been watching hardcore porn on their smartphones. The little feckless minds are seriously warped and don't care for consequences. My plan of action and it sickens me that I feel I already have to consider the future is to build up trust and honesty with my girls now so while I don't need to know details of what they get upto when they're with their friends or what they talk about.I want them to have no hesitation in letting me know if someone over steps the mark and not be scared to step back and refuse to do the "in thing". I could be the over protective father but that will to them telling me what I want to hear or nothing at all. I think what a prospective boyfriend will really fear is a girl who has an excellent relationship with her father with very few secrets. If worst comes to the worst I always have a pick, a shovel and access to some desolate land with no visitors;-)
gnasher16 30,598
There comes a time when your little girl turns into a grown woman. Dad's are often the last to spot this. My daughter will be 27 next and has just set up home with her boyfriend. A nice lad with no malice in him and if he remains so then there'll be no interference from me. I have an excellent relationship with my daughter and being an overbearing father could well jepordise that. She knows that whatever happens i'll be there for her whether good or bad. Love your daughter...but don't smother her. atb stabba Best post on the whole topic in my opinion ....Keep things simple and be there if your needed.....I couldnt be doing with all that obsessive overprotection stuff i remember as a teenager/young man the head to head battles i had with birds fathers i promised God i would never do that to a lad when i became a father !.....When my daughter was dating i always found the first introduction/handshake was sufficient to get the point across with no need for warnings......as luck would have it she ended up marrying a cracking lad,i wouldnt say we are close buddy buddy types but i certainly have a lot of affection for the boy and hopefully vice versa i guess sometimes taking a back seat while doing distant surveillance beats close up 24 hour a day monitoring Edited January 13, 2014 by gnasher16
Kay 3,709
I had a chat to my lad when he brought his girlfriend here , if he rushed her into anything I would paste him round the room , they went out for 3 years before parting a couple of years ago , she was a lovely girl & came from a good family which I still keep in touch with

budharley 945
at what point does the you upset my daughter and your in for it come into action , I see time and again things like this and wonder what its all about I have 3 sons and oldest 11 i know there probably going to have a few heartbreaks more than likely and i can only be there for them when it happens its a learning curve of life i think . Does your daughter coming home crying because her boyfriend has ended the relationship warrant it or are you talking about things like a fella laying his hands on them or cheating on them ?? im just intrigued as to what you think is acceptable as obviously if your thinking about when a relationship ends i think that's a bit over the top
