  1. I doubt you'll find anyone in the UK who can speak from personal experience of this cross - jagd terriers are very few and far between here, so I'd be surprised if anybody's attempted to cross one with a whippet. Which means that most of the replies you get will be opinions and guesswork; at the end of the day it'll be a gamble that may or may not pay off (but to be fair that's often the case with lurchers however they're bred, as there are no guarantees how any one individual will turn out). First off I'd want to know more about the parents - are they worked, and if so what do they do and
  2. My thoughts exactly. Admittedly, I've got very limited experience of seeing spaniels and spaniel types work, but all those I have seen have charged about at high speed, seemingly at random. But your youngster seems to be really systematically covering the ground.
  3. Great start, and to be fair it probably wasn't that easy. Rabbits on sports pitches always look like sitting ducks, but in my experience they go like hell and take some catching. Onwards and upwards for the youngster...
  4. I've thought about doing it but haven't yet tried. How d'you go about it in practice Bobo? D'you just floodlight the place and see what's what, or is it a case of lamp on, lamp off, one rat at a time like you would if you were lamping rabbits with a runner?
  5. Thoroughly enjoyed that! Never been out with either of those packs; thanks coverdogs
  6. Didn't get any takers but still had a good day by myself. Bolted 8, caught 7. One of them was a really unusual one - see http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/topic/351276-most-unusual-catch-ive-ever-had/
  7. Holy crap, that's appalling. I've been into fieldsports for 40 years and never encountered, or heard of, anything like this. Worst I've ever come across is verbal abuse and once got pushed in the river while I was fishing. Thank God he was found in time, and fingers crossed he makes a full recovery.
  8. Lovely looking lad. Good luck sorting the recall. I do sympathise as mine went through exactly the same thing when she was about 5 - 6 months old. Much better now, though when her blood's up the 'red mist' does still tend to come down and she turns deaf all of a sudden!
  9. While ferreting yesterday I was setting some longnets near an old barn. My terrier disappeared into the barn and was gone for a while. 'Odd', I thought. Once I'd finished setting the nets I whistled her out and she took ages to reappear. What the hell was the big attraction, I wondered. So I went in to investigate, and she immediately dived through the gap between these rearing pen sections, then squeezed to the left behind them - When I followed her I could see that at the back of the barn was a concrete feed trough about 2' off the ground that ran the full width of the barn. It was
  10. As the title says. It's in and around a garden that I ferreted back in September but the owner wants me to go back for another go. I've arranged to be there 9am Sat 12th. I had someone lined up to come with me but unfortunately he can no longer make it as he has to work. I'll have all the kit, ferts, mutts etc - I could just do with an extra pair of hands. It won't be big numbers, but should see a few. If you're up for it send me a pm asap with your mobile number. I've had a busy week and am knackered so will probably be in bed by 10.30 -11 so you'll need to get back to me before then. No dram
  11. If you get anybody wanting to buy just the locator on its own I'd be interested in the 2 collars.
  12. I can vouch for those long hunts as the last time I was out with you was probably 7 or 8 years before the ban
  13. Thanks FoDredneck. D'you ever get out with him as he's on your doorstep? I'm in contact with him, he's on here I'll message him on Facebook and let him know your trying to get hold of him pal Scott Cheers Scott. Tell him I'll give him a shout tomorrow early evening. Andrew
  14. Thanks FoDredneck. D'you ever get out with him as he's on your doorstep?
  15. I had a greyhound collide head first with a gate at full pelt as she was trying to catch a cat. The momentum of the impact threw her about 6 foot up in the air where she somersaulted and landed on her back. I was convinced she'd either killed or paralysed herself but she got up and staggered back to me. Her head immediately started swelling up like a balloon and I rushed her to the vet. She had massive bruising but other than that was fine and within a few days she was back to normal. Not saying that means your dog's going to make a full recovery, but hopefully it's not out of the question. Fi
  16. Does anybody have Nick Valentine's phone number? I really fancy getting out with his pack again (the Ryeford Chase) as I haven't been for years. I used to have his number but can't find it. Please drop me a pm if you've got it
  17. Been a while since I put any pics of my busher up. Not the best of shots, but here a couple from today. She's just turned 18 months. Still turns a deaf ear when she she's really fired up, but for the most part I can't complain. Certainly far more game in the bag these days because of her - she flushes for the runner but also catches on her own account. Not been keeping a tally, but I reckon she's probably caught around 100 rabbits now, most recent being one she nailed in cover yesterday. To be fair, probably half of those were myxied ones when she was a pup, but they did wonders for her confid
  18. Muscovies are supposed to be strong fliers as well I think? What sort of weight do they dress out at PW?
  19. I've heard that muscovies are really hard work to pluck though I've never done any myself. Never eaten one either but they're supposed to be really well flavoured (and get to a fair old size too).
  20. Plucking dry gives a crispy skin. Krawnden do you save the heads for the dogs? Sure do. There's virtually no waste whatsoever as heads and feet go to the dogs and most of the innards either go to the dogs or ferrets. I'm sure there are people on here who'd be horrified at that idea but my dogs and ferts have always ripped into them with gusto, as I'm sure a fox or other wild carnivore would do, so I don't have a problem with it.The only thing I don't let them have is any big lumps of internal fat. The feathers are mineral-rich so they, together with the blood-soaked wood shavings,
  21. You must be fast if you can do a duck in 10 mins - takes me way longer than that.
  22. I think some must be more prone than others. I've never heard either of my present two do one but some of my previous mutts did it regularly all their lives.
