Liar Or Doesn't Know What He's Talking About?
Alsone replied to walshie's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Just ask him if he can go to the Post Office tomorrow and get you a Game Licence, as you don't have the time, and you'll settle it alongside your tab next time you see him. -
Feo Visit Tomorrow - What To Expect?

Glad it went well but never trust them. Just remember they aren't your friends, most would prosecute you at the drop of a hat. Be courteseous and pleasant but always cautious. -
What Deer Calibre For First Deer Rifle.
Alsone replied to shropshire dan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Maybe. Substitute "proviso" or "exception" for caveat (the meaning of caveat) and maybe you'll see it differently. What I said in essence, avoiding the word caveat, is that a safe shot is a safe shot with the exception / proviso that there is no such thing as absolute safety. -

Deker with the greatest respect, you need to google the word "Caveat" then all will become clear. -
What Deer Calibre For First Deer Rifle.
Alsone replied to shropshire dan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Definately not then. But equally, I don't think I've said anything that contradicts the laws of physics. If an object in motion carries more energy than a similar object in motion with less energy, then it takes longer to slow down unless the forces of friction are so great as to negate the difference. I'm sure BH can correct me with the correct equation for all of this, but I believe the basic premice is true. If something is travelling faster and has more energy it takes longer to slow down. ...and misquoted me! Not sure I in any way misquoted you Deker. You Said "Ther -
What Deer Calibre For First Deer Rifle.
Alsone replied to shropshire dan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Not strictly true. Gravity is a constant, but a heavier round with more drag will drop quicker. However, the a heavier round is also probably in many instances a fired from a more powerful cartridge and thus whilst it has more drag and so sheds energy faster, it also carriers more velocity and energy to start with and so takes longer to shed that energy and so flies further. That's why a .223 travels further than a .22 LR despite gravity being a constant. I do agree with many of the comments above and Dekers a couple above that a safe shot is a safe shot, with the one caveat that there -
.22-250 For Deer North Of The Border
Alsone replied to shropshire dan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Roe was included for .22 as the Deer Act Amendment headed towards its final reading, the bill was presented to the RSPCA at that stage, who concluded (despite Scottish evidence) they could not be sure .22 was humane for Roe, they never actually said it was not suitable, so, in a last minute PC change Roe was removed from the bill. That would be about right..... Makes you wonder why someone from said organisation didn't go out on a shoot prior to the Act being passed along with someone from the BASC, and actually watch roe being shot with .22-250..........issue would have been re -
Is There Any Law In Owning Two Rimfires?
Alsone replied to neil b's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Indeed, lots of people have 2 or more, I currently have 2, and at one point I actually had 3 x .22lr on my FAC. It makes you wonder why they worry so much actually. You're never going to equip an army with 2 rimfires and being rimfire, the risk is very low in terms of lethality if someone went crazy plus you can only use 1 gun at once! Sometimes the rules just get a little bit silly. If he wanted 3 x .22-250's, then it might raise a few more questions, although even then, as Deker said, 2 might be justifiable if 1 was dedicated to NV and the other DV. However, it is w -
Federal Game Shok Or Remmington Yellow Jacket??
Alsone replied to ludders76's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I suspect, and stand to be corrected here if anyone knows different, that it's the American market that probably supports the manufacture of HV's as they seem to use few if any subs over there. I have a feeling that I heard that in some states, moderated weapons are banned and in all the others you need hard to get special permits. So in effect, they're almost totally banned to all intents and purposes. Without a mdoerator, the advantage of subs is mostly lost. Also, the Americans are huge "plinkers" and tend to use semi-auto's / full auto's such as AR clones for that purpose so consum -
Federal Game Shok Or Remmington Yellow Jacket??
Alsone replied to ludders76's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Probably because demand is low. Most people that shoot .22LR do so because it's low noise and that is lost with HV's. I don't personally know anyone who uses HV's through a .22RF. I know a few who've tried them, but everyone I knew returned to subs as the advantages of Hv were outweighed by the advantages of subs. Usually most people use .22RF for silence at short range and reach for CF for longer range fox skipping over HV's in the process. -
All joking aside, just be aware these are strict liability offences which means there's no discretion in this. If you were to be taken to Court, you would be found guilty irrespective of it being the police's fault or whatever they said. All the Court would be allowed to consider is "were in possession of a firearm" and "did you had a valid licence". They couldn't take into account the reasons why you didn't or the fact that it was not your fault. So be careful. Gun + lack of valid licence = conviction.

thanks for the replies that is going to help me sleep at night You'll probably be fine. I'd just be cautious. If in doubt, transfer them and be safe.

I think this is another area where the BASC needs to get involved to get a National Firearms Policy that forces the police to issue a temporary certificate where the existing certificate expires before it can be processed, whether it's the fault of the force or a late submission from the holder. It's unreasonable in my view to have an incoherent policy that varies from force to force especially where members of the public are left in some circumstances committing a serious offence and only free from prosecution at the grace of the police, who lets face it, aren't always all trustable. Plus in addition to losing his licences, taking a gun on land you don't have permission over is a Criminal Offence of armed tresspass - up to 3 months and / or Level 4 fine.

No, different rules for shotguns. The borrower may be any age but under 15's must be accompanied by someone over 21 and under 18's must be accompanied by someone over 18. Yep. Made me re-read it and that's spot on. Thanks for the correction on Shotguns.

So was I as I always thought the age limit was fourteen or something like that but from memory, the age limit also appears to be the same for shotguns. I wondered if it was changed quietly?

Are you sure about this? Taken from the Firearms Guidance Manual:

Wildcat Evolution First Impressions

Maybe they should get the moderators hot then arm wrestle over them, extra incentive. In fact when someone goes down, you get to find out which one is the loudest as well! -
No see 6.21 of the Firearms Guidelines. He has to be 17. The definition of "Occupier" is also a slightly grey area and if planning on using this exemption with someone older, I'd check with my force, preferably in writing. If they won't give you an answer, submit the question as a Freedom of Information request. Best choice for your son atm would be a rifle club.

Winchester Superx 42 Grain Rimfire Ammo
Alsone replied to mjr88's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Now the discussion has happened unadulterated, this was the video of testing I came across of what may be an earlier version - 40 gr vs 42gr into ballistic gels. Personally, when differences are slight, I think the best cartridge is not the one on paper but the one you have the most faith in. -
If you're target shooting, then look to the rest of the bench rest world as an indicator of the most accurate cartridges. They will have been tested to exhaustion! If shooting in the field, as Deker mentions, the target area is likely sufficiently large as to rule out any inherent accuracy difference between two properly aimed cartridges. If you want accuracy in the field then trajectory is far more important in my opinion than inherent cartridge accuracy. Personally, I'd be choosing something that flies fast and flat as you're far more likely to mis-estimate range or compensate incorrectl

How Many Rounds Do You Use In A Year?
Alsone replied to David Aiken's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Well there's little you can do if the biggest idiot out there is your FEO. At the end of the day, this is where all FEO's should have to be trained (maybe they should all be forced to take the BASC Basic Safety Course before being allowed to make grants?). You need to be careful with some forces though, as some forces will revoke your licence if you haven't shot it / shot it enough on the grounds of you not being able to show good reason. Personally, I also think the whole "Good Reason" thing is another bulls*t area of licensing. You have good reason if you shoot X round
