  1. its a necked down .30-06 .30-03 Charlie. Still a big cartridge though.
  2. Only trouble with .17 Rem is the availability and price. Very difficult to source and the only place I found selling factory ammo wanted £41 per 20 or more than £2 per shot!!! http://www.emmettandstone.co.uk/main/ammo-price-list/ Personally, unless you're going to reload, .17 Hornet might still be a better option. Still not the easiest to get hold of, but £22 per 50! around 50p per shot. http://www.johnbradshawguns.co.uk/centrefire.html
  3. Thing that would worry me about a .204 is the splash reports. Yep maybe not everyone has suffered it but many report they have and my view is can you afford to take the chance of having an unreliable rifle and then perhaps changing it as these things aren't cheap. Theres no doubting the impact of .204 when it expands as intended. I'd go .222, .223 or .17 Hornet (.17 Hornet with Superperformance ammo has an identical ballistic curve to .223, just less energy - still has 300 ftlbs @ 200 yds though http://www.shootinguk.co.uk/reviews/ammunition/17-hornet-calibre-review) not sure what the
  4. Absolutely spot on. 70yds is pretty much around the limit for birds and they only take a few ft lbs to kill. Even if you could get the numbers of hits through very tight choking and a magnum combination, you'd be struggling to deliver the lethal amount of energy at that range. I wouldn't take a fox at more than 30 yds. Much beyond that it becomes a lottery as to whether you kill or wound.
  5. I would add to what Andy said, that it's not always the most energy that counts. Shotguns kill with shock and a single eg AAA carrying 40 ftlbs, might not be as effective in creating shock as 4 x BB carrying 10ft lbs each. It all depends where they hit and with more shot you get an overall shock, whereas with 1 or 2 larger shot it can be very specific and so if not in a vital area might not induce the necesary overall shock to cause the body to shut down which results in a wounding. Equally, too many small shot each with little penetration and too little energy each, can also fail to cause an o
  6. I believe 30-06 is granted for boar and it's a more powerful weapon that .308. Note I didn't say better, I'll let others argue that one, but it's my friends chocie of calibre for deer and he likes it. Here's a nice visual comparison:
  7. I found some loads at the bottom of the page here for .223 AI that make around 3,850 fps with a 40gr: http://www.6mmbr.com/223Rem.html Was doing a bit of researching as I don't know much about wildcat rounds.
  8. At the risk of sounding silly, is it possible to buy preformed .223 AI brass?
  9. What's the advantage of .223 AI over .22-250? Looks devastating but can't seem much difference between it and .22-250 in velocity (presume energies are simialr but can't turn up much info on AI).
  10. I've long thought that air rifles below 30ft lbs should be available on a shotgun certificate. (30ft lbs because many air rifles except the extreme ones, top out around 25ft lbs so it gives some margin for safety). In addition, in any event, I think there should be a buffer available of say 5 ft lbs in which you get warned and forced to recertify the rifle at cost through a RFD rather than prosecuted to allow for any slight variations that might cause the limit to be accidentally exceeded (given that there are more variables than with Firearms Ammunition). The cost should serve as a deterr
  11. How can the firing pin break buddy? I'll strip it again today re clean it all and try. Would that still cause the extractors to fail? Stress fracture? Google broken firing pin and you'll find plenty of examples. Whether that's the cause here, I wouldn't know. But it's not unheard of.
  12. Never seen that document before. Many thanks for the link Charlie. Useful to all, and something I'm downloading for future reference.
  13. My feeling as well. I would have though the answer here would be to get the police to inspect the pantry and approve it in principle subject to a satisfactory door being fitted (and any other identified weaknesses being addressed such as the ceiling) Then the easiest approach would be to approach a safe door manufacturer with the dimensions and request a custom built door / frame to fit that complies with the hinge / anti jemmy / lock regulations when fitted. As for cost, if you're trying to save money, I suspect that buying a small / medium cabinet is cheaper. If you want the equivale
  14. I think you also need concealed anti jemmy hinges on the list.
  15. A lot of formal shoots have safety worries. Stupid really as chamber flags are all that's needed to re-assure and ensure visual / actual safety. You could always ask them if it would be allowed with a chamber flag. Besides there's plenty of idiots with double barrelled. I've been unfortunate enough to meet a couple myself. Nearly been shot twice in my life - once with a rifle .22lr on a pass through by someone who should have known better than to take a shot with someone forward of themselves, albeit out to the side and out of sight, but nevertheless he knew I was on the land somewhere
  16. Easily done. I only remembered myslef because the question had aapeared a few times quite recently.
  17. That's not quite correct SS. The 50ft rule only applies to Highways which consist or comprise a carriageway ie a public right of way for the passage of vehicles, and so as such does not include footpaths, cycle ways or bridle ways. I've managed to dig the BASC document out on this: https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CCwQFjAA&url=https%3A%2F%2Fbasc.org.uk%2Fwp-content%2Fplugins%2Fdownload-monitor%2Fdownload.php%3Fid%3D49&ei=o8LEVPySD8LzUIHGgZAM&usg=AFQjCNGyf8mDhAtlBxo49ktj7qSFUOwh1A&sig2=BzvWghsVlLKKHBDOztDQ
  18. The biggest issue as I see it is the original reporter saying they were afraid to go down the road. That could constitute interference. Also, as an aside, many gates are inset into the field by the width of the gate post so even if the road wasn't owned by the farmer, it might still be possible to stand on the land and be on the wrong side of the gate. I would say it's inadvisable though.
  19. Off you go again, lets simply ignore the questions in #24 and talk about something else! Obviously it was too difficult to back up your wild statements? And shooting bolting rabbits with a rimfire? That it is nowhere near as hard as you appear to think! Don't judge everyone by your own standards! You really need to stop reading so much and get a FAC, then at least you can talk from experience rather than what you read or heard down the pub. Deker I'm really not the one who's picking out threads and going off on rants here. You say I'm simply ignoring your questions in post
  20. Dan I have no experience of launchers so wouldn't know if they were a direct replacement, it was just one possible suggested alternative when near the public and something I have seen people using for dog training albeit it could have been being used for differing purposes than the noise. I also agree entirely that it's good to stand up for our rights as a community, although I think sometimes campaigns and education of the police by Shooting Groups is a better way to go than standing on your rights in a way that may get you arrested however innocent you may be later found. I take it you h
  21. That's certainly a very valid point and shows how ridiculous the situation was of the arrest in the 1st place given that they had every right to be discharging guns there. However, it appears it was a public place in so far as the police were concerned as the public had a right of access, and so reasonable excuse came into play. I agree it should never have made Court or even an arrest but it just reinforces how careful you have to be these days when it comes to doing anything in view of the public.
  22. Look above you'll find I said public park or private land with a public footpath nearby, multiple times. No where did I suggest someone should walk down a public street discharging a blank firing weapon in the road. Anyway, not going to keep arguing. We have a differing point of view, which is fine. I'm just more cautious than you when it comes to taking risks or standing on rights. My POV all along is where there's an alternative means of exposing the dog to a gun noise, it's better to consider it these days than standing there with a blank firing gun, whether you are in a public
  23. Yes Deker, exactly the same. Wood with public access, public park, both areas of public access. True, the judge did tell the police to stop wasting public money but only after the women had been arrested, questioned and put through how many weeks / months of torture by the possibility of going to jail until the judge threw it out. Above you questioned me as being ridiculous for even suggesting that someone might use a blank firing pistol for gun training in a public place but now you're suggesting that it was ridiculous that they were arrested for doing so. At least take a consiste
