What unusual things have you found when ferreting?
COMPO replied to mooster's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
One farm i do has a road along one border, at the end of this road is a quiet lane, often been ferreting and seen cars and vans parked but moving on the lane, also found a fair few porn mags etc...they are usually oblivious to me in cammo moving slowly through the wood obviously being quiet not to alert the rabbits etc.. then shouting elatedly when i catch a rabbit and they quickly drive off Once came accross a bloke sunbathing in ladies underwear whilst running with my dogs. I grew up on a cottage attached to a farm and we had all the regular things shaggers etc...plus dumped pet ani -
Nice pics...i used to ferret a strawberry field and an orchard, how big is that orchard? it looks a fair size

The Graham Welstead book was my bible from aged 13........its enough to get you started, you will pick stuff up on here and other hunting forums........read lots, listen to people and then make your own mind up, try and get out with a few people and see how different folk work

They are used to me pulling up in cammo with a ferret box on my shoulder to collect him actually last time it prompted a conversation with a bloke whose daughter (older daughter not the one he was collecting from school) works at a stables and may have a rabbit and rat problem at the stables?? i am waiting for him to get back to me Stubby- 7'02" tall why?? Went ferreting today, dropped my lad off at school then went to a farm i haven't visited yet this season, started at the roadside ferreting the strip of wood that runs along the road, using pursenets in the wood the dog paying attention to the below ground goings on found these flowers in the wood, dont know what they are, but flowers in November?? did two warrens and caught 5 rabbits, left a couple of warrens for later, had a bite to eat in the car at the roadside and spoke with the landowner as he was on his way back in, good to show your face, even be

When breeding dogs Compo you should do it to the best of your ability, not anything to anything. Colour genetics in dogs can breed bad faults, yellow eyes and pale pigment has in several cases led to skin cancers around lids on very poor pigmented yellows. It is also known they are much more prone to "sunburning" and can develop skin tumours on their noses, many owners of such dogs claim they get "freckles" too. Similar things happen to white Boxers ctc.. There is NO shortage of available and SUITABLE dogs to use in a breed like the Labrador, and genuine breeder wont let you use their dogs

said it on your other thread mate...try stinking them out....same principle as farting in a lift the occupants get out till the airs cleared, parafin soaked rags and other nasty smelling articles placed into the holes and the rabbits will temporarily move out and seek refuge above ground or in alternative holes.............but only temporarily and will dive back below ground when chased or will move to nearby warrens unless they are all done find a knowledgeable ferreter nearby and listen and learn......if your dogs have already killed rabbits and rats and are adults you wont be able to tr

a simple smoker i have used in the past......drain testing smoke cartridges....bought from a building supplies company, they are small cartridges you set on fire, they release lots of smoke which is meant to be used for detecting the cracks in drain systems/pipes etc.....they worked on a rat warren just as well dont think they would work on rabbits, either use ferrets or try stinking out the rabbits so they are above ground and you can then employ other methods to hunt/shoot them stinking out involves putting stuff like parafin soaked rags down the holes to make the earth smell bad an

MMmmm you need to be very careful when breeding for chocolate. NEVER ever use a yellow to produce chocolate, NO responsible breeder will do this. Resulting chocs will have poor pigment and eye colour and the yellows will have brown/pale pigment and pale eyes. blacks of course can only have black pigment, but their eyes are often pale. To breed good chocs, use black to black breeding with both parents carrying choc, then outcross to a choc from time to time, never introduce yellow to a choclate breeding program. Thats a lovely fella in the pic, typifies the breed. Dawn the abo

shotgun refusal when should i re- apply
COMPO replied to moss's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Dont know about the depression part, thats something that you would need support from your GP on, i had time off work a few years ago with STRESS, that didn't act as a barrier to getting the SGC...but i suppose that all depends on the circumstances and the individual, and their relationship with their doctor.....sorry to hear about your little one Rob, same age my little girl is now, anyone would be depressed in them circumstances. What i do know is what the law says section 21 Firearms act 1968....any person who has been sentenced to custody for life or to any form of detention for 3 -
i bought my first shotgun a couple of years ago.....an old spanish side by side.....£110 a bit rough but useable....i went on to buy a single shot .410 and then spent £440 on a semi auto (plus extras-sling/cartridges etc...) anyway i am back with the side by side and use that exclusively now...its rough, but it fits and is lighter and i like it.......i wish i hadn't spent £600 note on teh other two but there's no point selling them as i wouldn't get a lot for them a week ago

HOPE YOU CAN WORK SOMETHING OUT couldn't you fly over and take the dog back on the train and then as a foot passenger on a ferry?? years ago my brother worked in southern ireland....it nearly killed him, so i came over in a van and rescued him and his dogs and ferrets......anyway on the way back from Eire to England there was a chap on the ferry as a foot passenger with two greyhounds he had been out to buy and was bringing back , he had no car and was meeting either a friend with a car or his own car he had left at the ferry port in Stranraer (i cant recall which) either way he too

i know cos i have seen with my own eye's...(incidentally not that far from a train line-interesting theory about how they get about- this train line also has 50 yards of undergrowth either side of the track and runs from london to birmingham) ... me and dawn (and others) disagreed on this on M oochers,(although the poll i started is still over 70% believe) but i know what i saw and it was bigger than my 17 inch to the shoulder spaniel, couldn't tell the colour cos it was in silouhette as the sun was behind it, but it was definitley a cat and definitely big......my spaniel by the way hates

Commando Socks are really good, they are the ones the british military issue, i wouldn't wear anything else with boots.......i dont wear mine much more than a week though before washing them, i have a few pairs i have had 8 years...and some i bought two weeks ago, they are indistinguishable the old ones dont show any signs of wear DS you are a strange one.....get the butter shots up again

i tried to start a business alongside working (i work continental shifts so am home more than half the time) the business folded, people expected service there and then and when you are working for the next four days and cant go see them until 5 days time, they call someone else who is doing it full time and can attend ASAP......dont know what i would advise, i understand wanting to keep the security of work and start small and part time and build up.......but i couldn't do the two......i feel to make a go you need to commit 100% of your time to it......couldn't you take a career break/unpaid

yes i know a lad who is a free lance shepherd and conveys a lot of sheep to the abatoirs, he told me about something similar in a halal butchery in Birmingham he said the sheep went through screens on a conveyer belt, they went up on this belt stood there oblivious, as they went through the last screen, the Iman said his words over it, then it was stunned and its throat cut with some such device....he said it was very peaceful and that calming music was played which seemed to quieten the sheep and that he even rated it better than a standard Abbatoir! Although i also remember a cattle mark
