  1. Personally when i feed my ferrets a whole rabbit....it is exactly that whole including all the guts, the ferrets get all their vitamins and minerals from the insides, so they will eat part of the stomach and the partially digested greens etc....as well as the heart and kidneys, lungs, heart etc....and then top up with meat and bone. I have 5 ferrets and a whole rabbit this time of year lasts them 2 days, during the summer obviously it would go off after 12 hours Edited to add good going Darren!
  2. Sounds like a good idea, might try a bit of pipe myself if needed!
  3. Funny-Warning to burglars
  4. well done that lad....he listens to the voice of experience and changes what he does, Its a wise man who learns from others mistakes rather than having to make them himself!!
  5. I was told years ago that about 1 rabbit head for two ferrets for two days was about right...........It hasn't let me down, none of mine are ever overweight, i do feed a bit more during the winter as they are working and its colder and they use energy staying warm. with the hoblets (vasectomised hobs) you will see they lose a lot of weight during the summer when the jills are in season i tried to get the wife to let me on the same diet as i am sure mating 7 jills is why my hoblet stays slim during the summer! obviously with other feeds (dry etc...) you have to estimate and work it ou
  6. well said that man, and viable alternative given for killing a rodent. has as already been mentioned its highly illegal and quiet immoral to throw live animals into the ferrets to be eaten, and i dont want to be dragged down with you when the anti's get hold of this Google search the protection of animals act 1911, thats the legislation your breaking!

    anyone

I know we have hunters all over the world and a few that travel, has anyone seen these dogs in action? http://www.pachon.info/ They are Pachon Navvarro's and are a spanish hunting dog, from what i can tell they are a small hound like HPR dog i came accross this dog article http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6940289.stm and then searched on the pachon navvarro and found this http://usuarios.lycos.es/pachonbardenas/fourphotogalery.html Interesting ugly little dogs! I want one!
  8. Good to see yours get a true varied diet with a bit of fruit thrown in......i really think all ferrets should have some. OldblueEye once posted pics of his ferrets eating gooseberries?? Mine also like a little drink of beer, but being a northerner its bitter rather than lager They had worked hard that morning and deserved a drink!
  9. Interesting thread, amazing that so many say feed them what they would eat in the wild and then just list a carnivorous diet......In the wild polecats eat yes its true rabbits, rats, mice etc...they also eat frogs, eggs from ground nesting birds and in the appropriate season some fruit! My ferrets when exercising in the garden have eaten my strawberries from my plants, they also like half an apple in their hutch to claw at and gnaw. So to some up, my ferrets eat winged vermin i have shot, rabbit heads from when i have been ferreting, the occasional squirrel, when i have no meat they eat
  10. Shredded paper in the bed box, sawdust in the shit corner to soak up the piss! My ferrets drink out of both a bowl and a water bottle, has anyone else noticed when given the option they prefer water in a bowl to from a bottle! i use a big earthenware dog bowl for water (too heavy to be knocked over) and they prefer that to the water bottle, however after a day the bowl is usually full of crap and is half empty, then they may drink from the bottle until i change the bowl!
  11. I have seen 2 STB x Whippets, one was owned by an old school mate and was a little fat black lump! The second one i saw was with a bloke at a pub, it just looked like a slightly built staffy, he stated it chased rabbits and had killed a few rats, but he didn't work it Cant see what one would give you over a pure whippet, when you start to get to less than half cross obviously the more running dog the faster , i can imagine a 3/4 or 7/8 whippet looking and acting very much like a whippet There has been clouds over certain KC lines regarding possible outcrossing, this apparently all
  12. Mince the meat two thirds rabbit to one third bacon, mix in an egg and make into burgers! Add herbs/chilli etc to taste.
  13. I had a big hob and i gave him away. the vasectomised hob i have now isn't little! here he is being held by my 2 year old daughter!
  14. £1.25 Skinned at my butchers and he takes as many as i can catch!!! there is only so many rabbits you and the ferrets can eat, i turn the rest into beer tokens Perhaps my ferrets should be re-named beer and peanuts?

Dogs go to kennels and the ferrets are looked after by a friend, last holiday to France last may and the neighbours looked after the ferrets, in June we are off Belgium,Luxembourg,Germany,Switzerland,French alps , french riviera and then back via paris! My sometimes ferreting partner has said he will look after the ferrets as long as i take the hutch to his house!

Was back out today on another difficult hedge (a laid hedge which is very thick and has sheep netting either side) bolting with just 1 ferret and using the shotgun, shot 2 rabbits then started to bolt babies about 5 weeks old anyway the heavens opened and it started to piss it down so i picked up and came home
  17. I have the Wellstead book and have read it lots of times, it was my bible when i was a teenager! And what DS was hinting at with the locator/spade comment is, the essence of ferreting is to quietly set nets and then enter the ferrets to BOLT the rabbits into the said nets, dont walk all over the warren smoking and talking on your mobile and then rely on the locator to find the ferret and the rabbits it has bottled up/slain due to your own ineptitude! sadly there are too many modern ferreters who have forgotten the true essence of ferreting! I was ferreting some warrens that really require two people on difficult hedges, i work shifts so ferret during the week sometimes , my sometimes ferreting partner works monday to friday so was un-available (we ferret together - i have two weekends off a month , however he is not available for a while as his wife is having a major heart operation) the season is progressing and i have a fair bit left to do so i used the shotgun and nets, netting what i could my side of the hedge and using the gun to cover the other side, as it turned out the first 4 fell to the nets, the fifth wouldn'
  19. Lots of advice been given on the below thread:- http://www.thehuntinglife.com/forums/index...showtopic=38626 my advice is think outside the box and think small to start with, outside the box= plant nurseries, golf courses, livery yards, smallholdings, market gardens etc......usually they are a lot more receptive than the proper farmers and enough small bits add up!
  20. As long as he isn't in pain i wouldn't worry, ferrets eyesight is crap anyway, they hunt by scent and touch!
  21. I agree with both Ditchshitter and Tawny I was at a stage a couple of years ago thinking of buying a lurcher.............i didn't i bought two more ferrets instead, reason, two ferrets cost me a tenner, they eat next to nothing, dont need annual boosters and account for lots lots more saleable rabbits than a lurcher or whippet ever could Sadly there still are too many who buy new ferrets every season, years ago my brother went to buy a shotgun, the bloke got talking and asked what we did, my brother started talking about our dogs and ferrets, bloke replies you must be well into it (thi

thats the job compo wish all my days ferreting with dogs was as easy as 9.30 lunch and finnsh at 1.30 i was usualy out til round 4! I work shifts so often ferret during the week, when my lads at school i have to drop him off and pick him up, so that really restricts how long i can be out, and explains why i didn't start until 9.30! i could have stayed out an hour longer but to be honest i thought leave it i have enough! I sold those rabbits before picking my lad up at 3 and have an order for more, i may get out again on thursday!!

First 4 to the pursenets, then the last one whilst using the nets refused to bolt and i had a 4 feet dig, it may have been due to the bloke who rents the grazing driving over on his tractor that prevented the last one from bolting , then back to the car for a bit of lunch, then just with the gun and the ferrets on a couple of very hard to net hedgerow warrens, 4 rabbits bolted and 3 shot not a bad ratio 8 rabbits and home for 1.30pm having started at 9.30am and stopping for lunch
