  1. Killing slugs ! Wow, the high temps and rain have brought them out in droves/flocks/stampedes. Got sunken jars with beer, glass pellets, gravel, matting, fencing, checking the PT at night to remove any that I see/letting a chicken into the PT during the day to eat them etc but they still climb in. I guess the mild winter didn't kill off so many, but they are pretty scary this spring.
  2. Evening Jok - would be interested to hear about the no watering - The land here is high ( 1200 + ) so gets blasted by wind, but also heavily rained. Soil always seems damp/wet on digging, but the top looks dry. A mix of decent peaty stuff with some shale and clay, depending on where you are. I water the poly daily, but leave the open veg stuff and water when needed. How much water is needed for the "no need to water" ?
  3. There is a set on the road from Meidrim to St Clear for the last 2 years. Good luck !
  4. you not let a few hares go on there, suspect they there all ready Folks have some stunning views and properties fair play They are indeed Terry, it is lovely to see them, and the rabbits. As long as they stay off the veg patch that is !
  5. Thats the view south to the coast at Carmarthen. Same sort of land west to the Preseli mountains, east to the Brecons, and north towards Cardigan. I am very lucky.
  6. If the dog is fine in herself, not showing signs of tummy pain, or diarrhoea/constipation etc, then it is likely the diet that is causing it. Dark colour can often be from feeding too much organ meat - anything more than 15-20% is likely to cause it- in the mix. Not all the dried meat packages will list what percent is organ, what is actual tissue etc, so it can be hard to find out exactly what is in it. Round here, it is about £35 for a 25kg sack, but the quality varies from maker to maker, and some have far more organ meat in than others.
  7. No outside taps here ( its on the *to do* list ! ) so one of the first jobs when I moved in was to fix water butts to the house and barn to collect rain water from the various roofs. As I have to take buckets of water to the horses, chickens and geese each day, I just add a few trips and do the poly tunnel and veg beds at the same time. Previously I have used 25 litre water canisters, taken by car to the allotment, which was very time consuming, and I am sure was a big factor in putting people off taking an allotment, or continuing to use one.
  8. Thank you Terry - I use it for horse youngsters - a smack on the backside is noisy but doesn't have the sting of a whip - great for learning stuff without getting hurt or fearful. There is miles of it here, coiled in piles, left by the previous owner. I didn't think to use it as a frame - but I will now. My stingers are growing to be fertiliser water - if I can't get rid of the acres of them all at once , they can die and be useful !
  9. I think its years of being ran into by big b*****d police horses at football has left a mental scar ! So if 1 hand is 4 inches why not just measure horses in feet and inches ?.....is it some sort of horsey etiquette or is there a clever reason ? No clever reason - just history. They measure them now for competition classes in cm rather than hands height. I can't get my head around that - they say cm and I think skateboard.
  10. Gaz - you need to learn the Starfish Stance and the Mother-in-Law Growl. Arms up, legs wide, low pitched growl ( swearing works fine, but a *Gerrut out of ma spaaace ! * works well too ! ) you'll be fine !
  11. Lovely looking horse - nice eye, and nice attitude - you are right to be proud
  12. terryd, is that blue water pipe, or something specific for the hoops ? I now have 5 cucumber babies growing on a plant - left it in the conservatory from Feb, now gone out ( carefully ! it is about 5 foot, and a bit wobbly ) to the poly with a bigger pot and rod. This was an all female plant - first I have tried, so hopefully better than the slightly bitter ones before. Toms are looking nice too. Got some greens that are being great for outer leaves for salads, and still growing nicely. The spuds are doing ok despite the late frost, but put in some late ones just in case. Spring flowerin
  13. They updated the strains of the Lepto vaccine for the first time in many years, so this one is much more *new* than others, which often just get a small update to include new strains, but are essentially much the same year in year out. It has always been one of the vaccines that is more likely to cause issues ( same as the Intrac kennel cough nearly always gave a minor cough/upper respiratory tract infection about 10-14 days after being given ) and it doesn't help that some vets are denying there is a problem. Putting an anaphylactic reaction in the same bracket as a "dog was a bit off colour
  14. For now they are in a fenced off bit I normally use for geese, so only about 1/4 acre, but they can take the rougher stuff from there for a few weeks, to give the new grass space to come through better which will be nice for the geese. After that, they will be going into about 5 acres of quite rough grazing which hasn't been used for a year, so should be more than enough to feed the sheep, and not be left trashed at the end of it. I've been told anything from 1 sheep per acre, to 10, depending on the quality of the grazing, and whether it is for lambs for the freezer before the end of the year
  15. They got here last week - just 2 initially, but about a dozen now. After moving in here Feb 2015, and realising they nested in the extension (unfinished by previous owner and trashed over 10 years of being open to the weather, due to be removed and replaced ) I blocked off the openings, and made up for it by opening the barn and a few sheds so they can nest in there. Toad and frog spawn in the run-off ditches still, along with lots of tadpoles of various ages. Some still very small, some with back legs appearing.
  16. Spuds, onions and beans are doing ok, various green stuff has been doing well - especially the chard. The deep beds are ready for the carrots/parsnips, and I am trying sprouts this year for the first time. Had to clear snow off the polytunnel again today - the outside beds are still not doing much with the weather being so variable. Getting the beans/peas beds ready, and then bringing a new raised bed into use over the summer for salad greens, as I get a bit better at growing seeds. A particularly bug/slug-loving chicken spends a few hours in the polytunnel to get rid of any intruders, and is
  17. A band called Disturbed - a cover of The Sound of Silence - a song I didn't think could be bettered, but they have done a great job on it.
  18. You pay more for individual cremation of an animal, then you know the ashes you get back are just your animals. You can get ashes back from a mixed one, but it won't be all your pet. I have all my dogs cremated - scatter some of the ashes in favourite walks, and kept a small bit from each, which I keep with their collars. Each to their own - it isn't for everyone, but each person has to do what suits them. Military housing means multiple house moves, so burying in the garden was never an option, although I would have done that if circumstances had allowed. I wasn't allowed to bury my old hors
  19. There are loads of supplements available, some better than others, and some suit some dogs better than others. The downside is that they can take a good couple of months to have any real effect, so you can end up trying a few over quite a long bit of time, and not really find any difference in the dog. You may find that a low dose of a prescribed medication is more economical in the long run. Things like PLT and Metacam ( from the Vet ) can be given at low dose, and can also be given every 2nd or 3rd day, rather than daily, as they are long acting anti-inflammatory tablets, rather than being a
  20. I'm not good at the National. I backed Spartan Missile I backed Greasepaint I backed Smartie Luckily I had success with Grittar, Party Politics , Number6valverde and Neptune Collonges. This year - not sure - hoping for Many Clouds. but the going is going to be interesting.
  21. Proper roast ( doesn't matter what type ) with plenty of vegetables, a good gravy, and a yorkie pudding !
  22. Your older dog can still bring infections back to the house - but if you are sensible about where you walk him, and stick to quiet spots, then the chances of taking anything home to the pup is very low. Same goes with taking the pup out and about - avoid areas with other dogs until the jabs have had a few weeks to get the immune system up and running
  23. Wow Beam - they look amazing ! terryd - I bet it tasted awesome, and that is the most important bit at home -
  24. I am sorry to say, but yes - it's almost like the company that advertises paracetamol for headaches, paracetamol for joint pain...and then a special paracetamol for womens monthly pains. Like they are different, and you need to have all of them to cover the various issues. Scandalous I know !
