I was in Alston a few years back . I walked past an abandoned church and there was a bloke gardening in the church grounds. I happened to say to him what a magnificent building the church was and he replied "yes I've just bought it at auction" and he showed me round. It was truly stunning inside. He had paid next to nothing for it, he wasn't specific, but I know it was l less than 50 grand. He was hoping to convert it as a house for himself. I've been back a few times since and sadly theres been no work done. He anticipated planning problems and I guess he ran into plenty.

I've genuinely got an open mind about the presence of big cats in the UK. But why would the government want to suppress evidence of their existence?

Let's hope it's not a chess game with two over muscled gym rats. We want to see violence not a tactical battle. I wonder if AJ will open up like he used to, or be the over trained chess piece he has developed into? Dubois will come to fight but he can't take too many of those bombs Hgrovic was landing. As you say his defence is poor. Dubois looks very easy to hit, he seems to carry his chin high. I noticed at the weekend Bivol carries his chin right down on his chest. Look and learn Danny boy.

I spoke to a down to earth keeper up near Lochinver. He told me that just after that act requiring licences for big cats he spotted two lynx in the lamp and shot one. He didn't think it was a big deal.

We took our best dog to race at Powderhall to run under NGRC rules and regs. We were confident he wouldn't disappoint. Into the trap he went,the trap gates swung open and he just stood looking bemused. The official said its obvious your dog has never chased this type of lure before. The lure was more of a ball than the ' hare' he normally chased which was longer and flapped about. We tried a few times to get him wedded to a ball effect lure but he wouldn't have it.

We put a greyhound bitch to a top class stud dog which broke records all over the country. Result,all pups were duds. Waste of money for the stud fee. The dog we stopped, but subsequently won a race and got us into trouble, accidentally caught a young bitch on its first season. She was only 9 months old. Result a litter of crackers some of which went on to race at open level. We just didn't appreciate how good he was. He could take a hare too and always ran better after a kill. We kept him until he was 13.

I once had a share in some greyhounds which we ran at our local flapping track. Most owners used to tell the bookie if their dog was 'trying' or had been stopped. In other words had been fed ample amounts of tripe and been knackered with exercise before the race. One night we assured the bloke our dog had been stopped, which he had. We had run him for miles on the sands behind a mini van and fed him a lump of tripe. b*****d still won! The bookie thought we had double crossed him and arranged for some heavies to have 'words' with us. I kept looking over my shoulder for months until it finall

I've never been much of a gambler. £10 is my limit. I had a friend who put 5 grand on a greyhound at Sunderland race track. It lost, but he never batted an eyelid. Another friend thought nothing of spending a similar amount in Las Vegas on f****n slot machines! Seems to me like an activity for the criminally insane. They are both decreased now. The one who went to Vegas regularly use to beg me to come with him at his own expense. We grew up together and were lifelong best friends. He got very lucky in a business venture. The background of lurcher litters is quite often hearsay and guess work. Especially those pups coming from a pet background. I wouldn't believe a word. The only exception being hard-core working bred litters,where more often the pups are what they say on the tin.

Wow the fabled hundred rabbits. Superb performance. Another story from Appleby. A friend of mine loves feathered ponies. One year he went to Appleby and bought a beauty along with a full set of tack. When the cash was handed over, the gypo suddenly took all the tack off whilst simultaneosly a fellow gypo drove alongside in a pick up. Gypo 1 tossed the tack in the back of the pick up and said" if you want the tack you'll have to fight me for it." With that the pick up sped off with both gypos inside. Caveat emptor,or, as the Scots say "watch yer f****n sel" at Appleby.

I bought a lurcher sappling for next to nothing from a traveller in a pub at Appleby. He had acquired it as part of a deal for a horse and wanted rid. He said he didn't know anything about it, not even if it was stock broken. You would think all the warning signs were there but foolishly I bought it anyway. I guess I felt sorry for it. It looked so miserable tied up outside the pub. Anyway, turned out to be a very decent dog with no vices except it was not interested in rabbits, only bigger game. Stupidity sometimes goes unpunished. But not often.

My Mrs has a lttle 'velcro' whippet . If she took that to the fair, some sod would distract her, grab it and sell it on. I cannot understand why folk drag their dogs around agricultural shows and fairs. Or why they dress in shooting and fishing gear when they are not pursuing those activities. Guess it's something to do with identity. This is me and here's my dog. Not comfortable for dogs at all.

Daily Mail says categorically that all pubs closed for the fair. Westmorland Gazette says some pubs open. Probably the latter source is true.

This week. Think I will go but it's not as good as in the past. For a start they are going to close all the pubs. There's always a bit of disorder but it seems a total overreaction to me. The fair must bring in many thousands of pounds to the town. In the past there was always a whiff of chaos in the air especially in the evenings. Nowadays the place is crawling with police and RSPCA personnel dressed to look like cops. In the past you could take a punt on a lurcher pup or buy chickens or goldfinches. But I haven't seen livestock for sale for a few years. However I'm still going. M

I've noticed the number of goldies. Brilliant. But bullfinches few and far between here. The 7 year cycle used to happen with sea trout and salmon but their numbers are so low you don't notice it now.

Haven't heard one for years in my neck of the woods. I used to look forward to it. Read their numbers are declining big time.
