  1. Nice one mate , they are the future of our sport . I always have an annual squirrel bash .All the young beaters and their dads come along and we shoot all the dreys out . There is a huge ancient beech woodland along the top of the shoot which is suffering bark stripping damage , so every squirrel killed is a bonus . When a squirrel jumps out of the drey it’s like world war 3 has broken out ?. The kids love it .
  2. You could put a bit of bait out for the Squirrels. The other day I was sat in the truck and I noticed a feeder had been tipped over and the lid off . There must have been a bit of wheat left in it because I saw a few squirrels running in and out . Within an hour I’d shot 6 . Went back the next day to eat my sandwich and accounted for 4 more . It’s amazing how far they will travel when they find a bit of food . I didn’t realise I had that many about , hope that’s put a bit of a dent in them , but I doubt it . Looks a nice bit of ground that Stavross ?
  3. Got to say I was impressed with the weihrauch I looked at . The bolt was smooth to operate and there was a two stage trigger , which was perfect . The overall feel of the rifle was “right”. It was nice and short , so great out of the truck window I would imagine . If you are bunny bashing with this caliber it could be expensive, but if it’s the odd fox , I don’t think you should worry about the cost too much . You’ve got some time on your side so good luck with your search. ATB
  4. I would discount the goshawk theory. No way a gos would take a cat . Kitten maybe. Sure the cat didn’t have a touch of mange ?
  5. Looks “harder” when you tear em . Shows real intention !!??
  6. I agree with a lot of what you are saying, in particular, Badgers, Buzzards etc . But I haven’t had one farmer ask me to shoot foxes because his cattle have got neospora which he thought came from foxes . Thermal image scopes and spotters in the hands of indiscriminate shooters “have “ had an impact on fox numbers . They don’t breed like rabbits and my concern is that levels in the countryside may not be sustainable if continued shooting is going on . Talk to terrier men and huntsmen. Some of their best hunting has been wiped out because of what they call “the midnight cowboys “. The fox is a
  7. And I thought I was useless on the BBQ !
  8. Reminds me of the “Flying Machine “ pub near Gloucester, circa 1986/87 , Travelers tearing there shirts off , glasses flying. You couldn’t pay for entertainment like that now . ?
  9. Have a look into weihrauch , they don’t just make air rifles . I looked at a 22lr at my local gun shop . It was a “beauty “ . Well engineered, thumbhole stock , threaded for a mod , brand new £650 . Talking to the guy and he reckons they are better than Anschutz . Like Walshie says , you can’t go wrong with CZ , I’ve got an old BRNO in 22LR and it has given me years of service and still shoots straight. But if I was thinking of upgrading, I wouldn’t hesitate in a Weihrauch .
  10. Sorry pal but I don’t agree. On arable land growing say wheat . Foxes do more good by keeping rabbit numbers down surely? Everything in nature balances itself out . If you start putting pheasant down you create an unnatural amount of food and you get loads of foxes move in . So you have to deal with them , same with chickens and sheep . But on a dairy or beef farm or arable with no shooting interests , I can see no reason to shoot foxes . “Leave them for the terrier boys”!
  11. Thanks for all your “likes” . This could be the start of a wonderful “bromance “. I’ll kick my Mrs out and you can move in ?
  12. I know , what’s wrong with them ? You put a roof over their heads , food on the table , surely they don’t want you to spend “quality time “ with them as well? My Mrs even wants to have a “chat “ now and then . Women are from Venus mate !!!
  13. Just the two last night . No cubs ? A big dog and a small vixen , she has had cubs but where are they ? Who knows , I dare say our paths will cross soon enough . Set off about 11.30 . Snoozed in the chair all evening, the Mrs thanked me for my wonderful company as I left the house , muttering words like “don’t bother coming back, ya boring bar steward “. So refreshed and awake I started my tour of the newly cut fields . Nothing on the first lap . Drove the mule into a narrow field with a muck heap in the middle , a quick scan with the thermal, nothing . Then I noticed some movement on the muck
  14. I only shoot foxes that are causing a problem. If like you say it’s an arable Farm , they do no damage , I leave them alone . I shoot foxes on the pheasant shoot I keeper , a chicken farm and I also help a keeper mate on the next door shoot . Fox shooting has become a sport in its own right now , but we must be responsible and only target foxes that are causing damage or have the potential to cause damage . Shooting them for just target practice seems wrong to me .
  15. Don’t leave your fox control to the last minute if you can help it . Work done now will reap rewards. Harvest for wheat near me is on or around 10th August, later on higher ground, and if we get a damp spell it could be even later . If you have time put some snares down . I’ve got them in all my “impossible to shoot “ areas and pick up foxes regularly. It’s a welcome sight when you see a pheasant killer dancing about when you turn up ? Good luck with the calling anyway ?
  16. There always seems to be enough . Look forward to seeing you out with your young dogs later in the year . ?
  17. Just thought I’d let anyone who’s interested know how it went last night/ this morning. Set off about 11.00pm and it was still not really dark . The contractor doing the grass was making haylage , so the grass was still in rows . I was using my Tikka T3 light in 223 , with a pulsar N970 LRF digisight . I also have an ATN 640x480 thermal spotter , which is a brilliant bit of kit . I drove around all the fields that had been cut and not a sausage. Then I noticed a familiar shape in the distance going over a bank in the direction of a small field that had had its first cut about a week ago . I t
  18. 5 in the truck . A long night . I’m off to bed , knackered. I will do a write up when I get up and about .
  19. Just looked a zilverhaze profile and he is in France . Doh . Loads of decent drugs available over there .
  20. I thought Amprolium was withdrawn a while back . But it’s the main ingredient in coccibal . Had some crows bothering a couple of huts , got the vet to do some pms . And all huts were clear apart from the two huts which were being bothered by crows . Hexameter will be next .
  21. Not sure what Deker thinks , but I reckon it’s a cross between an otter , badger , peregrine, with a hint of domestic moggie . Yummy ?
  22. We’ve just had the silage cut for the second time this year . Only shot one on the first cut . The cubs are out and about now , so I’m expecting to do better tonight. I always find it better the second night after it’s cut . Word seems to have got around fox world that there is a meal opportunity. I also reckon it’s not worth going out till about midnight. Any thoughts on this ?
