Out on the Rape tonight!
shovel leaner replied to shovel leaner's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Started the evening off checking the fencers on all the pens and making sure there were no problems around the pens . The birds are getting out and about now and getting back in the pens to roost no problems now . I know there is still a fox about that I haven’t accounted for , but he hasn’t caused any problems...yet ! So i waited out where I thought he might show at dusk but no sign of it . Got on to the rape field about 10.45 and nothing about . I know I’ve got the fox population right down now and every fox I get now will be a difficult one . There is the wheat to come off yet which should -
What is sad is this is becoming an everyday day sort of thing . Time was when I would have been shocked, but now I’m sadly indifferent to it , yes it’s disgusting, oh dear poor people, but then forgotten the next minute. That’s the world we live in today !!!

UKIP were out in town the other day getting signatures for a petition to abolish the license fee . They reckon if they get enough they can maybe get a vote in parliament and get rid of the shower of shite . Can’t see it happening but there is the start of discontent and I get the feeling that people in general begrudge the license fee, I feel it will eventually go .

We need some rain
shovel leaner replied to shovel leaner's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
Well my eyes aren’t deceiving me , we are actually having a drop of rain , not much but maybe enough to dampen the dust . I have been driving around the estate, kicking up a dust trail like a Mujahideen fleeing an Apache helicopter. I forgot what a nice smell there is when it rains ! -
Another good day on the blacks

When I saw this thread I thought I was going to be reading about some South African popping off the locals around one of the townships . “Phew “ , Just crows , well done . -
Well done Ian , that’s some shot with a night vision unit .

Just been down on the rye grass / silage fields and nearly sprained my ankle. The size of the cracks in the ground ! Still no rain ! -

Out on the Rape tonight!
shovel leaner replied to shovel leaner's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Well , I went out as planned and waited by a pheasant pen until it was dark , about 10.20 saw nothing. Did a bit of a tour around the estate , scanning with my thermal spotter and only saw a few deer , rabbits and a badger . Arrived at the newly cut rape field about 11.00 . Prior to entering the first field I made sure everything was ready to take a shot , but nothing ...next field ....nothing’ and that was it , can’t shoot what isn’t there . Will be out again tonight and will stay out later , hopefully with a more interesting tale to tell . ATB -
Nice work pal , they do loads of damage to trees , Beech in particular just stripping the bark and killing off the upper branches. It’s just vandalism they don’t eat the bark . Every one counts ?

No , not in the Peter Sutcliffe / Levi Bellfield way , I’m a happily married family man ! They have started combining here . So I’m going to sit out near one of the release pens and see if anything shows . Then when it’s dark. I will do a couple of circuits of the estate. I will do a write up tomorrow. Atb

Out ready and waiting
shovel leaner replied to David.evans's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I had the same thing happen to me last week . Took the shot and heard the “whumph” and watched it wriggle on the ground with its tail in the air . I made a mental note of where it was in relation to the hedge / fence . Went to the spot to retrieve it .....gone !!! Looked high and low with my thermal and a lamp , nothing . Climbed the fence behind and searched the bit of wood / undergrowth , again nothing . So I went back the next day to have a look with one of my terriers who has a good nose for Charlie , but I didn’t need him , the fox had run out into the field about 15-20 yards from where I -
It's always happening in the countryside........

Is that what it is . Cos the idiots name is on the books . Wouldn’t have thought he’d be daft enough to leave evidence . Still I’ve always said “just cos they’ve got an education ,doesn’t mean they have common sense “. Finn Stockes .... you’re an idiot !!! -
A good start on new ground.

Couldn’t agree more . I always did alright lamping and was happy enough with my results. But I’m a total convert now . Just makes dealing with Charlie so much easier. I must get around to watching them acting naturally. I’m always in too much of a hurry to pull the trigger!? -

Everywhere is so dry at the moment, could be anything from a fag to a Chinese lantern. I’ve had two separate incidents on the estate I work . Kids !!! Lighting fires . I found a pile of school exercise books in the corner of a wheat field that had been set on fire and a proper bonfire in a conifer plantation. I put the fire out in the conifer plantation only to have to call out the fire brigade the next day because it flared back up again, they came and dug the ground around it . Apparently they are the hardest to deal with because the roots smoulder and reignite. Bloody kids ??? -

It can be a funny crop . Too much pressure from pigeon over the winter , competition from weed , too dry , too wet . Seldom a perfect crop . The rape here doesn’t look too clever . They reckon to start Friday weather permitting. -

They spray the rape off with glyphosate (round up) to desiccate it and make it easier to harvest. Was it that ? Or some sort of disease? -
Just as long as our guys have it and the enemy doesn’t......happy days !!!

Nice one Jarvis , good work . Nice when it happens like that . Is that a drone pro ? How you getting on with NV and thermal? -

Good luck , I’m waiting for the rape to get cut . The harvest will probably start a bit earlier because of the weather . I’ve still got one or two about , I’m spotting them with the thermal but they are not hanging around . I may try “baiting and waiting “ myself . Let us know how you get on ? -

Scrap that post I thought you wanted to hunt with a pistol . I read back and saw you want to hunt with a muzzle loaded rifle . Doh
-
And I used to shoot sparrows with a gat gun when I was young .... each to their own ???
-
I think that the system works pretty well . If you need a pistol for humane dispatch, you can get one . I cannot see why anyone other than keepers , slaughter men , deer managers would want or need a pistol. I also don’t see why anyone other than the police or military need automatic weapons. I like field sports and and enjoy shotgun shooting, and I use rifles for deer management and vermin control . But I would not want to go and shoot at those human shape targets with pistols and machine guns , although some people probably would. America has a very different gun culture to Britain .
