  1. Re the windy nights: try Musto hats. I have one with a clip at the back so you can clip it to your t shirt or jacket in high winds. I thought it was a bit gimmicky at first but it certainly works.
  2. where the f**k do live with human shit and sheep carcasses lying about lol Different ends of the country. The dead sheep was my first lurcher so that would be early 90s in Cumbria; you'd occasionally find them at the bottom of the fell where they'd missed their footing...even herdies can do it sometimes. The human excrement was around fifteen years ago when a couple of groups of travellers camped up in different locations in Portsmouth...we altered the route of our daily walk after that.
  3. I didn't realise they were holes in the lid; I thought it was a packed lunch box with a massive pile of shortbread.
  4. My last lurcher loved rolling in human excrement whenever he found any when travellers moved onto a nearby field and my first kelpie loved to roll in rotting fish. I seem to remember my first lurcher liked rolling in sheep carcases too. Weird! Like somebody said; I was always told it went back to some inner need to disguise their scent but surely if a wolf rolled in dead fish the bison would soon know they were coming.
  5. Apologies in advance if this subject has already been addressed elsewhere but after a quick search I've been unable to find anything other than comments in two threads which hint at what I'm expecting. While searching in one of several boxes under my bed for a particular map I found a few copies of both EDRD that I thought I'd lost (it felt like Christmas had come early) and six copies of Countrywise magazine. I remember ordering an annual subscription (which would equate to the six copies) but don't remember getting any reminders to re-subscribe. Then, when searching online all the cover
  6. Having owned a pure whippet and whippet bred lurchers I don't think I'll own another unless it was a whippet x grey. They aren't big enough or fast enough for the ground local to me. had a racing bred (none ped) whippet bitch 20in 20lb great little rabbit dog, some of the male dogs at the track went up to 36-37lb very fiery things you could see bit of staff in them, I liked them types of whippets . But I know what you mean with a whippet x grey , just that bit more bigger /tougher type , if you got one about 23in 40lb that be bang on for rabbits, plenty fast/agile enough , feck me my
  7. I didn't know that about New Zealand lamb but it's put me off even more...I was already put off buying it from Tesco when I heard they'd stopped buying from a particular slaughterhouse because they were using dogs to control the sheep. Don't forget that mutton tastes even better than lamb too.

  9. I had a collie x whippet many years ago and she was extremely agile and the most obedient dog I've ever had...not the most intelligent but definitely the most obedient if obedience is measured by "doing as you're told." Unfortunately she was also far and away the most sensitive. She was bred by a racing whippet breeder who wanted a sheepdog for her sheep but didn't like the idea of a pure collie. She was out of one of her 3/4 whippet 1/4 greyhounds (though there was a collie x greyhound several generations back on the whippet side too) and the sire was Hancock's Tory who was sired by Richa
  10. I think it goes back to what somebody said above and also the argument always given in favour of first crosses over lurcher x lurcher i.e. you know exactly what you're getting. I'm not saying that this is a good reason but it's certainly an understandable one. You need to know more about the two individuals and their ancestors with a lurcher x lurcher (or something else x lurcher for that matter) than with a straight cross where you know the exact percentages. For some the certainty of knowing what percentages of each breed their dog supposedly has outweighs the drawbacks of having to research
  11. When I had my first kelpie (the red and tan in my avatar who's still with me at over fifteen) people assumed he was a rescue mongrel and would ask if there was any German Shepherd in him. Now that I've had four of them people recognise that they're related but assume I'm extremely caring and have rescued a whole litter of mongrels. Having said that, they must be getting more common as a growing number of people now ask if they're "one of those Australian dogs," though to be honest they're usually thinking of heelers.
  12. I think the problem with Labour (since Blair) is that people no longer trust them to do what a Labour party should be doing. They're seen as basically being Conservatives with a different badge e.g. "We hate your drive to privatise everything and your get rich quick schemes...but thanks for the idea; we'll take it and run with it." To a certain extent I think many who vote Tory don't actually like them but accept the fact that you (to a certain extent) know where you stand, whereas Labour (thanks to Blair and Brown again) are seen as a group who can't be trusted. To put it another way: Con
  13. Steer clear of those prick eared mongrels: they're rubbish!
  14. I agree: I found exactly the same with a kelpie forum I used to go on. It had been gradually getting quieter for the last couple of years and it suddenly folded earlier this year...once again it was facebook that was cited as the reason.
  15. The only Welsh I ever learnt was taught to me by my younger sister's friend at school as her mum or dad were Welsh. It was "Good luck all Welsh and arseholes to the English!" The only thing is, I can only remember parts of each half so if I tried to write it on here (in phonetic English) I'd probably be saying "Good luck to your arsehole!" I wish I knew more though as it's a beautiful language. I recently watched a programme with Sian Lloyd, in which she toured around North Wales, and she said there are some areas with a kind of cobbled Welsh/English (Wenglish) where the residents speak W
  16. I use the hose as well but, just in case anybody's getting the wrong idea about the above recommendations for using a hose, it's not the actual dose of cold water which stops them. I have a hose permanently rigged up down the length of my garden to the run at the bottom with two of my kelpies in as the youngest (now seventeen months) went through a bad barking stage. In all this time though I think he's only had one occasion when he has been sprayed...and that was the very first time. I can't see many dogs being stupid enough to stand in the spot where a jet of water will hit when they dec
  17. For anybody who didn't read my post in the other thread: I read my mother-in-law's Observer at the weekend and there were two anti-articles about the vote this week. One was by a new Conservative MP who said she wanted to overturn people's prejudices about the Torys being a bunch of toffs...which is why she's voting to keep the ban in place. Let's hope that the rest of parliament is basing their vote on what's right for foxes, farmers, wildlife, etc instead of looking trendy.
  18. Continuing from Barrie's post...I read my mother-in-law's Observer at the weekend and it contained two anti articles pertaining to this vote...and one was by a new Conservative MP. She said she wanted to overturn people's prejudices about Torys and make the general public realize that they're not all toffs... Silly me, I thought her vote should be based on hunting, animal welfare etc.

    Yeah...you need Velcro!
  20. I've had a lengthy and positive reply from my MP and will put it up as soon as I work out how to (cut and paste and all that jazz).
  21. Around the time my eldest was born (seven years ago) I read or heard a quote which I completely agree with: the best thing you can do for your kids is to love their mum. Yes; I may be a soppy old git but I'd rather that than the useless $£&* that my father was; £!%$$+%£ everything in sight and taking the most perfect woman he's ever likely to meet for granted.
  22. I'd forgotten about that one; I'm always moaning about it to my wife but it's become so commonplace you hardly notice it any more.
  23. I was on holiday in the South Hams about four years ago and took my son to a wildlife rescue type place with a few farm animals, red squirrels etc. In one shed they were rearing several chicks and I saw one I particularly liked; it was similar to my silver pencilled Wyandotte but looked much more gracile...turned out it was a pheasant! What a plonker!
  24. I feed white fish to mine sometimes and the only drawback I find is that their urine stinks for the next 24 hours.
