The husband of a teaching assistant I used to work with was a butcher and gave me a couple of pigs' heads once. Hilarious sight watching old Rusty pick it up from behind and reverse into his kennel looking like some kind of chimera.

This may sound off topic but...my French teacher at secondary school was an excellent watercolour landscape artist. When I asked him why he taught French instead of art he replied that he'd had two main interests (French and art) and decided that it made more sense to have the art as his hobby than French. I'd say that, for the vast majority of us, the same is true of our love of hunting/field sports/pest control/mooching about ie we'd rather enjoy it as a hobby than sicken of it as a full time job. Then again, I'm lucky as I enjoy my job too.

I've really enjoyed reading these couple of Airedale threads that are currently running. I first became interested in the breed many years ago when I noticed that the breeder mentioned in Colonel Hancock's "Heritage of the Dog" had the same surname as me. Maybe the fact that they're all-rounders rather than specialists (as mentioned above) is why they appeal more to the kind of people who work lurchers, vermindogs etc. I guess I'd say that they're one of those breeds that lots of us would have on our list of "dogs I'd like to own but will probably never get round to it." Having said that,

Nans Pat, that's reminded me of another one...use an old telescopic aerial from a radio taped to the side of the ferret finder to save you bending down too.

If possible, go out with somebody who really knows what they're doing. You can learn from your own mistakes but it's quicker to learn from somebody else.

I've found the best way to view it is to be counter-intuitive i.e. the closer my hand is to the action end the less chance I have of hitting my hand. Over the last six months or so, since I started using a catapult, I've found my hold has gradually changed so that I hold it right up around the "neck" with a tiny section of my thumb and pointing finger and the rest are kind of fanned out...imagine a mock-karate hand...I also drop the catapult as I release the pouch so all I'm concentrating on are the initial aim and release. Only works if you've got a lanyard around your wrist of course! J

New Hunting Poll Needs Urgent Attention..dont Ignore

Done...only just seen this thread as not been on for a week...don't know what you're all complaining about...it's 52.7% now! -
JohnnyBoy68: thanks for the reply and the extra photo. Sorry for the late reply but I've been working full time this week...actually I always work full time but I'm a supply teacher so what I mean is that this week I've worked full time in the classroom whereas I'm usually part time in the classroom and part time house-husband (that's a bit like being a house-wife but without doing any house-work). I got the kids in my class to make Father's day cards the week before last but when I got home my son asked me, "Daddy, why do we make Mother's day cards in school but not Father's day card

I know this has been said on here before but...why oh why do they always assume that all we want to do is dress in red and get on a horse and chase foxes with foxhounds? I live near a wood which has several dead trees (including mature ones) thanks to huge amounts of bark removal by grey squirrels and yet I have to make sure nobody's looking every time the kelpies catch one. And it feels as though nine out of every ten birds I see are woodies but, again, I have to check if anybody's watching first. Most people who want to repeal the ban want to do so for the "other" pest species and u

Yeah, there's one near me in the Meon Valley like that. It's either called the roe buck with a picture of a stag or the Stag's Head with a picture of a roe; can't remember which.

Johnny Boy68: off topic but what's the amazing sculpture in the background of your photo as my son and I are trying to work it out. He says it's either a cobra or a dragon but as you're in Wales he's hoping it's Idris...he's mad about dinosaurs and dragons!

I've just had my memory jolted by another thread on here: the name that film one. I have a kids book called something like "The Creature in the Dark" which has a storyline similar to the one in the film mentioned. In it they find it odd that the pawprints found don't have claw marks (hinting at it being a big cat) but it turns out to be a cheetah which is the one cat which doesn't have fully retractable claws. My wife thinks I'm extremely petty but it annoys me about as much as incorrect usage of apostrophe's. I did that one on purpose!

I think that final comment by Tim Bonner sums it up. Hopefully more and more people will become aware that the ArsePCA is simply a thinly veiled bunch of extremists with a dog biscuit in one hand and a balaclava in the other (which is held firmly behind the back). However, in the meantime, the excellent work they could and should be doing goes undone.

Around the time of the ban, there was a country fair for city kids staged at Staunton Country Park to the north of Portsmouth and my wife and I took along the four and five year old kids we were teaching. As a precursor, I gave them a herding and ferreting demonstration in the hall using wolf/deer and collie/sheep masks as well as my old kelpie , Rusty, and a couple of ferrets. I was always one of those people who kept quiet about what I did for fear of being criticised but I'm always pleasantly surprised by the number of others who either enjoy field sports or "went ferreting with Granda

I've got two cards from my six and three year olds and some bars of chocolate and a mug with a pheasant on. Thanks Oscar and Dilly.xx

My local news had a feature on last night about the summer solstice and Stone Henge. Part of the report talked about the huge influx of people who'd be there overnight and it ended with a comment something like "...but for now it's just home to the crows." While this line was delivered they had the call of a jackdaw in the background and then showed a rook on one of the stones! This got me thinking about other mistakes on tv and the earliest one I can remember was watching an episode of Tarzan in the late 70s early 80s in my teens with one shot of a supposedly African river with a boat flo

Rushing around doing nothing "like a fart in a colander." Worthless "as much use as mud-flaps on a tortoise."

Thanks Forest of Dean Redneck, I thought that might be the case. Bird, a friend of mine told me about a radio vet phone-in show she listened to once. The caller was concerned about the health of her python as it had stopped eating; she was aware they don't eat often but this bout of abstinence had gone on for too long. While questioning her, the vet found out she slept with the snake in her bed...he told her to immediately stop doing this as the python was preparing for a particularly large meal! What a horrible thought. I doubt a pet python would be big enough but could still do some

Whenever my nan saw or heard something unusual she'd say either, "Well I could o' seen a rowin' boat," or "well, I'll go to the bottom of our garden." Everybody I've told this says it's usually "...the foot of our stairs," but my nan always got things slightly arse about face. Another, when somebody couldn't do something (usually somebody famous) was "She couldn't sing for toffee apples," once again it's apparently usually apples!

No photos I'm afraid as it always takes me ages to work out how to put my photos onto photobucket and then transfer them onto here but... last August my six year old son, Oscar, found a magnificent looking beast of a caterpillar in his vegetable patch/digging pit/dinosaur enclosure. I knew I'd seen one before but had to look it up in my Collins book to recall it was a privet hawkmoth caterpillar. The year before we'd hatched out a red admiral we found on our stinger-nettles so decided to try the same. Unfortunately, following some research, I discovered they pupate underground. However, I

I've got four slow-worms in my garden at the moment. There's a piece of common land a couple of miles away with some too...but a lot of dead ones too...would that be down to foxes or cats or something else?

Lundhag Scout...much lighter than the alternatives and the waterproofing is via applying something to the leather instead of a goretex liner so they won't takes days to dry if water gets in over the top.

I personally prefer the hexnuts as I find it easier to centre them in the pouch and they're less likely to fall out if I'm walking around waiting to take a shot. I've also found that I'm slightly more accurate with them though I presume this is probably because I hold the hexnuts "cleaner" in the pouch than I do a bb.
