Beddy Whippet Vs Bull Whippet
matt1979 replied to Beastmaster1980's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Only seen a few beddy whippets work 1st x most were keen as you like but in truth lacked pace. One was a waste of space and just wanted to scrap. Beddy x greys I have seen have been a better dogs. Can't comment on bull whippets never seen one work atb -
Lovely looking dogs those, how do they fair on open ground on the back of a rabbit? Do they have the pace, not picking just genuinely interested as they look crackers atb

And you also mean it suits your dogs as not all food suits all dogs..... I think in fairness I did state MY dogs in the above and like most people that's all I have to go on. I just know I have one dog in particular that has struggled for the best part of 7 years to settle on dry food (I gave raw with it as well, but she doesn't go well on purely raw either), but the Autarky stuff has had by far the best results for this dog in particular but the rest (who will eat anything and do pretty well) have also imo been better for it. I have personally found wheat based products don't agree with

ps I am not on commission lol

I will keep chirping in and say this Autarky food is imo a better dry food than any mentioned, I have tried pretty much all of the stated feeds on this thread at some point and generally they go through my dogs at least too fast. This one is good value and my dogs certainly dog very well on it atb. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Autarky-Adult-Dry-Food-Chicken/dp/B0077QEA92

Sure there are some good ones out there from working lines but had the displeasure of looking after a few dobermans a few years back and can't see the point in adding them to a lurcher personally. And to be honest my bouvier was a far better dog for their job then any I had the onerous task of looking after atb

Always found it easier to settle pups indoors I Don't kennel my dogs anymore never seen the point in building kennels if their is a utility room in the house that is suitable. Think their are a lot if benefits to keeping them indoors personally if you have suitable space, main one being the risk if thieves outdoors. Morton what are bad house habits? Genuine question

It's not something I have done with lurchers myself but have no doubt they could do the job. But the places I have ratted would be a potential injury nightmare for a running dog suppose some are more durable than others but still a lot of potential risks IMO atb

I have tried allsorts of food over the years at different prices always mixed with fresh meats and I tried Autarky grain free food about 3 months ago and I can honestly say it is by far the best food I have used all four of my dogs have it and they love it and thrive on it. It has a decent protein % and no added crap, well worth a try and a decent cost it is available from amazon delivered to your door for around £20 for a 15kg bag. Think my fella looks decent on it atb

I have always found a dog and bitch mix better but obviously complicates matters if they are in tacked. I am no expert but wouldn't have thought 2 spaniels together would be an issue and always found dogs benefit a lot from being together. I have four they aren't kennelled but no different keeping them in a utility in my eyes. Never had an issue and never known of an issue of any note in the family who have kept terriers and lurchers for years. Keep a dog well worked and exercised a dog when kennelled or in a home should be asleep or chilled can't be doing with hyper dogs around the place just

Can't comment on red mills but I have use alot of different dried over the years with added mince etc recently changed to a food called autarkys which is grain free and I have to say this is IMO by far the best and reasonably priced in comparison to other brands with similar ingredients. Amazon delivery it free as well which is a bonus atb

Just give a shout out to my little tyke no world beater but she does me proud, she has steadied up of late into her second season and other than not the best coat, I am happy with her progress, if there is something about she generally finds it. Not the most flashy or aesthetically pleasing of dogs these SLT's but this one can definitely work. Bottom pick her elderly side kick, who specialises in tracking ............. plastic bottles and crisp backets, he has once found a bag of pork scratchings once though to be fair lol [/url]

I am not into digging and realise that people do things there own way, but I did think to myself if, as has happened in the past I have been gifted a dog by someone I know, or frind of a friend etc. Someone who has gone to the trouble of raising it well and a pup I am happy with, then I just couldn't take it for nothing irelevent of how well I did or didn't know the breeder, its just not how I personally have been brought up. I picked up a 8 week old lurcher pup for a friend down south a while back, this pup was breed by a friend of my uncles, who I or the planned owner had never meet before.

If I lived closer to my uncles place I would have her out all the time but it's a bit of a trek to the farm so have to just borrow her when over there. Both the collies just mooch about the farm so it's pot luck whether they are around when we set off for a wander atb

At the time my dad worked her local so it was smallish arable land in the main. But my uncle was and still is a big coursing man so she travelled all over the country at various points. She was also a delight to own I was chief bait for her during training sessions across the local footie field dragging a lure behind me whilst my old man held her back til I reached the top end of the field, top times for a young lad.

My dad had pure grey over from Ireland in the late 80s bred from a Irish derby winner whose name I can't remember. This bitch was no speed merchant by greyhound standards but I can just remember her staying power was top drawer. I do think sometimes the greys stamina is rubbished when if fact some were real stayers, not saying they have saluki stamina but to say they all have none is daft. The bitch I am talking about was worked by my old man and nyone who races greyhounds would say he ruined her. But she still won 34 fom 57 at a decent level and was still racing admittedly locally at nea

She was more interested in the other dogs to honest. Flushed a rabbit back end of the walk and she the joined in the action, after that she was showing much more interest in the rabbits holes along the hedge line. Not a huge collie fan but she won me over soft as a brush and nice shape to her atb

Went out earlier for a few hours over my uncles farm not much about to be honest bit the dogs put a shift in and enjoyed it. Still very wet on the ground and heavy going, pushed a few pheasant out and the terrier pushed a rabbit out for my lurcher pup, which ended with a close your eyes and hope for the best run through a thick wooded area, heard a thud at one point and feared the worst but he returned shortly after with just a little scrape. He seems to either have the luck of the Irish or an uncanny nack of avoiding another to hard, either way long may it continue. Gained this fella for

Stealthy Alfie - 9 Weeks To 11 Months
matt1979 replied to matt1979's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Lol yes she is a beast, in her twilight sadly could write a book about that dog. None of it good really but plenty that was funny atb -
Time has flown since I picked this little fella up locally, little bit of a gamble in truth as I didn't know the sire that well, but with the parents seemingly fitting the bill and as it was a nicely even litter, I took my chances. It has to date been money (all be it not much) well spent, he has been a fast learner from day one really and has basically shadowed my little terrier since I got him out after his jabs. Seems to have gone from a little dot to a solid little fella overnight and just about time to start hopefully reaping the rewards and enjoying some action together. He is a natural

I don't doubt your experience with them but I have only seen my dad's work and he is the exact opposite of what you describe is a tough cookie, obviously not the physicality of a bull x but definitely can't fault his drive and certainly not soft in any way shape or form atb
-
Never had it but mates terrier had the same issue when a youngster he rang the vet and the vet asked him if he had any ky jelly to hand lol in the end the vet sorted some cream out which did the trick. On a serious note think it can be pretty rough on the dog at the time and needs sorting atb

Plenty of cardio work to increase heart rate and the capillaries in the muscle bed will increase meaning better blood flow, lower blood pressure warmer feet with better circulation and less ache. Won't happen over night though atb

In fairness though you also have a fair chance of the pups throwing to big to work tight cover quickly and with a tendency to work the edge of cover and not in it atb
