  1. First of the sprouts today the youngest daughter loves them fried with bacon. One plot is tidy for the winter and the other one is not . Meant to plant my garlic today but forgot so will try and get that in next weekend
  2. Out this morning at first light in fact a bit before with the heavy fog it was still dark at 6.30. In my wisdom I picked a nice dark pine wood to work. Could make out some shadows of rabbits and my black dog streaking about all good fun but he couldn't get them to ground and headed for the thick cover. Ran these holes through just in case but no luck into a big old valley then waste deep brambles. The dog got a scent and started casting across the bank working the cover. He was just a spec in the distance struggling through. When along came mr rabbit you can just make him out sitting t
  3. bloody red fern grows having me blubbing like a baby
  4. just repeating what I have read but it now makes sense to me a dogs first encounter with any thing is the most important. So in my case a whippet bouncing all over my little pup set the president for what he expected from there on in. If he had met the same whippet at 6-7 months old when he would also hopefully have had some obedience on the way it would have gone whole different direction and a good one I reckon But like lab says some people can and some can't I definitely fall on the wrong side of that category
  5. I agree with stockpot there life expectancy will not be a long one lol
  6. It makes sense to me now. I don't want my dog to want to mix with others. I just want him to blank them and carry on like they don't exist. I used to have dogs when I was younger and never had an issue wit them and other dogs. They never got to meet other dogs as we were out in the sticks a bit and kept to our selves. But I could throw any of them in the back of a truck with a strange dog for a nights lamping and you wouldn't hear a thing from them. After a gap of 20 years or more i get my lurcher pup and hear all about this get them around other dogs and mix as much as you can. So straight
  7. What a waste of a lovely dog fingers crossed you get some sort of justice Unless the dog was at deaths door and suffering I don't know how they could do such a thing
  8. Yes and the wife don't pull any punches in her reviews of my work either Biggest complaint is the strong taste of vinegar though that didn't stop her demolishing a jar of onions in no time I hardly got a look in. Might let her open these tonight as I recall slightly watered down white vinegar with a few spices I like threads like this a lot to be learnt. Good luck with the eggs kanny might try them my self
  9. in my case its just a case of how long the mrs can keep her hands off my pickled onions
  10. Very interesting I pickled some onions in the malt vinegar from aldi. The vinegar is way over powering hopefully it will mellow with age
  11. Once she finished looking at them like that did she just carry on her way I assume or did you call her in ? My dog used to look at them like that but it was because he was weighing up his options. He doesn't do it any more though
  12. no good waiting be over before you know it
  13. I feel your pain lol That's one thing dogs have to me 100% trust worthy they are working out of sight a lot of the time ! Iv watched mine from a distance working straight through sheep, there's a different between being good with sheep and being comfortable around them Yes got mine to a point where he avoids them and is safe but his not comfy around them and nor am i . Hopefully in time now that will change as we go incident free. Took a line straight through them the other day and they didn't register. But he has a lot of bridges to build and i trust him bout far as i can throw him
  14. Mine would take to that like a duck to water. He would have no qualms quartering a hill on scent. Spent two years trying to get him to do the opposite lol He works his nose a treating winding stuff far far away Small fields and cover with me though so close is better
  15. bloody hell takes a fine picture that one

  21. Lol. Ironically, after posting on here, it all went to absolute custard yesterday morning. The dog wouldn't come back to me for about 10 minutes. First time it's happened. It was extremely dispiriting. That'll learn me. I know all about absolute custard keep at it
