its hard but worth it. There used to be more inbred lurcher strains about years ago. You would see some families like peas in a pod.Breeding properly isnt easy. Ive said it before but if you cant put pups/dogs down you shouldnt be breeding anyway, its not for you. If we had never practiced inbreeding we would never have got pure breeds.

interbreeding is different to inbreeding. people from birmingham are interbred and from Norfolk Inbred.. -

If the pair are closely bred in first place it should make the job simpler (if they were bred right) -
And by weeding out thats how you purify a strain.

Very surprised that you never heard of back breeding as its used with the dedicated breeders Superior dog and bitch are bred a female pup is kept --- breed this female to her father -- keep a female pup then breed her to her father -- and so on always using the original sire . Takes years to produce the desired goal .. If by superior you mean very good workers, that is only half the battle Im afraid unless you know the dog you are using is genetically pure for all the traits you are after, physically and mentally. The chances of that are very small. You can only find this out for

Put it behind you mate. Not as many bull or wheaton lurchers about nowadays but Im sure you will get something decent. Youve got a few summer months to find one.

I know they say dont over do the calls but try watching this bloke and his calls. Sam advises calling a lot and to not stop after you have shot a crow but carry on. I can vouch for his calls. They work if you learn how to use it properly.

good on you mate. I think the wheaton and Bull go well together in a lurcher.

most of these pet vets give advice about nutrition and feeding but most have little knowledge of working dogs and feeding. they are mostly trying to sell you some top price kibble.

Are you saying its wrong to block someones passage with a loaded weapon? It took just 3 months to think of that!!

Looking at the dog is better than scales imo. A puppy should look like a bundle of health. Scales are handy just to make sure it gains weight daily. Some dogs do need to eat more than others to gain and some less just like people. I had a 3/4 bull that needed nearly twice what you would expect for a dog of her size to keep her at decent weight. she had 4 to 5 meals a day as a pup so not to burst her with large meals as she didnt know when to stop.

Sorry I meant to say tripe is good for calcium not fat. I would only feed to some dogs for interest otherwise its not much use I agree. It does contain about 15% protien I think, so not enough as good food for puppies. Muscle meat inc beef chicken and lamb are best. I always boil chicken. Its supposed to be a bit deadly when raw.

Most of my shooting will be done on sheep farming land. How would you guys recommend setting up the decoys? Is there a certain pattern to use do they need to face into the wind or anything like that? you can put crow decoys out any old way and you dont need many. get a good caller and learn how to use it properly.

good tips philpot, especially the building hide days before.

Ive used that stock board myself. Its very good, doesnt rot and you can paint it aswell.

Can you put picture up? Does she eat up ok? Do you break feeds up or just one feed? What breed or breeds are in her? Is it warm where she lives/sleeps. Pups burn a lot to keep warm so need High calory foods, also goats milk is very good or multi milk by SCA. baby rusks are good. I dont like the sound of bulking up myself. Puppies should gain weight daily, and have a nice bit of fat under the skin, but they shouldnt look like bloaters.Weigh it yourself, dont rely on vets every few weeks. feed it as much as it will eat at any one sitting, from your hand if necessary and make it good quality mince bee

I thought passports were needed for south. You definitely need one from southern Ireland to England. Some will drive into north first to save passport.

Whatever you do you cannot guarantee finding good homes for puppies. People who get the best out of breeding there own are doing so for entirely selfish reasons..to have made all the decisions regarding the mating, including the choice of stud and then doing the best for the bitch in and after whelping. I always cut litters down anyway which takes a lot less out of the bitch and gives more to whats left. The only reason to put a bitch through rearing a large litter is money or sentimentality, and if you suffer from that you shouldnt breed dogs. The breeder then gets the choice of pups,I always k

You could try putting it in the shooting oppertunities section under pigeon shooting. Might get more views.

My old Spaniel retrieved hundreds of crows. He knew they pecked and grabbed them accordingly. He also jumped barbed wire fences and hunted through the thickest of bramble and blackthorn. He was a well bred dog that knew his job. He still had both eyes at the end of his long and busy career. Mind you he was well bred from dogs that had also been properly tested in the field. Ive seen spaniels refuse to pick a flapping cock pheasant before. Its embarrassing for the handler in comany but dogs need to be bred from the right stuff and exposed to different situations.

You can easily access non ped pedigrees (they should be called non kc) on internet and you will see that they are bred down Greyhounds. They can do some very good times over the sprint distance on Greyhound tracks which usually takes place in early autumn.

you need solid dividers and avoid bars. dogs can get damaged between or get pulled through. Terriers can also walk up mesh and bite through chicken or rabbit wire. dont leave gaps or take chances on quality of materials.

make a very good hide with a roof preferably on edge of wood or thick cover. Do not let them see you. Dont get out of the hide at all. Shoot runners again to kill clean rather than chasing around, unless you have a dog to retrieve. Learn to use a good call.

my mate finally got a non ped whippet last year after us looking everywhere, but was unfortunately crippled for good 3rd time out on lamp.I dont know if it was not fit enough but I do think you have to consider where they are going to be run,as injuries could be a problem for some.
