  1. shot 40 0dd on stubble with just 10 shell decoys. I wasnt being clever ,just forgot battery for flapper.
  2. dogs that constantly stare at you are too needy.
  3. 93 on Barley stubble from bales. Lots of young birds but good sport. Rape looks very ripe in parts.
  4. I think some of the working sealyhams might have English Bull in there makeup,or at least the ones pictured in Cork. They seem to have more useful strains of English Bull terriers in Ireland than most of Britain. Is that because a few were used in badger trials years ago?
  5. hes a bullshitter alright! and ready to take your money if your daft enough to believe all that crap. 10 years ago he told me he could trace his line back 400 years...now its gone upto shitting 800! A few hundred years ago peasants couldnt read or write so is it word of mouth? very convenient that. I reckon He'd make a good wedge with a memory man act if the dog peddling dries up.
  6. https://www.pets4homes.co.uk/classifieds/1598232-norfolk-tumbler-and-smithfield-lurcher-puppies-wellingborough.html 800 years he says lol Bred to continue old-fashioned family bloodlines (kept for over 800 years). Bred for function , health , temprement, brain and athleticism . Make ideal family pets , because historically kept hidden from public view (poaching dogs) in family dwelling. Growing up amongst children. Can be trained when to chase and not to chase as required. The puppy pictures are of ones in their new homes : because I disagree with people choosing pup
  7. Good tip that King..All the best ideas are simple. I usually put mine in a sealed container overnight and fridge in morning, but I'll be doing your way tomorrow.. In about a years time I'll probs believe it was my own idea anyway
  8. its hard but worth it. There used to be more inbred lurcher strains about years ago. You would see some families like peas in a pod.Breeding properly isnt easy. Ive said it before but if you cant put pups/dogs down you shouldnt be breeding anyway, its not for you. If we had never practiced inbreeding we would never have got pure breeds.still plenty of line breeding among the racing/showing seen that still going on but wouldn't think there's many that get put to sleep Think again mate!! serious show people are ruthless in pursuit of perfection. In most pure breeds and especially the Greyhoun

  10. interbreeding is different to inbreeding. people from birmingham are interbred and from Norfolk Inbred..
  11. If the pair are closely bred in first place it should make the job simpler (if they were bred right)
  12. And by weeding out thats how you purify a strain.
  13. Very surprised that you never heard of back breeding as its used with the dedicated breeders Superior dog and bitch are bred a female pup is kept --- breed this female to her father -- keep a female pup then breed her to her father -- and so on always using the original sire . Takes years to produce the desired goal .. If by superior you mean very good workers, that is only half the battle Im afraid unless you know the dog you are using is genetically pure for all the traits you are after, physically and mentally. The chances of that are very small. You can only find this out for
  14. Put it behind you mate. Not as many bull or wheaton lurchers about nowadays but Im sure you will get something decent. Youve got a few summer months to find one.
  15. I know they say dont over do the calls but try watching this bloke and his calls. Sam advises calling a lot and to not stop after you have shot a crow but carry on. I can vouch for his calls. They work if you learn how to use it properly.
  16. good on you mate. I think the wheaton and Bull go well together in a lurcher.
  17. most of these pet vets give advice about nutrition and feeding but most have little knowledge of working dogs and feeding. they are mostly trying to sell you some top price kibble.
  18. Are you saying its wrong to block someones passage with a loaded weapon? It took just 3 months to think of that!!
  19. Looking at the dog is better than scales imo. A puppy should look like a bundle of health. Scales are handy just to make sure it gains weight daily. Some dogs do need to eat more than others to gain and some less just like people. I had a 3/4 bull that needed nearly twice what you would expect for a dog of her size to keep her at decent weight. she had 4 to 5 meals a day as a pup so not to burst her with large meals as she didnt know when to stop.
  20. Sorry I meant to say tripe is good for calcium not fat. I would only feed to some dogs for interest otherwise its not much use I agree. It does contain about 15% protien I think, so not enough as good food for puppies. Muscle meat inc beef chicken and lamb are best. I always boil chicken. Its supposed to be a bit deadly when raw.
  21. Most of my shooting will be done on sheep farming land. How would you guys recommend setting up the decoys? Is there a certain pattern to use do they need to face into the wind or anything like that? you can put crow decoys out any old way and you dont need many. get a good caller and learn how to use it properly.
  22. good tips philpot, especially the building hide days before.
