  1. Ditch, I think the 'bubbling' sound they make is made by the hens and the 'cuckoo' is made by the cocks. just a thought . . . OTC
  2. Casper, Casper . . . get off off that crossbar . . .
  3. That's the way to do it - those feathers help - They just cannot resist them leading into the tunnel like that can they? OTC
  4. Yes it is a Fenn Mk I Rabbit Trap, there are plenty of them still about if you look for them. The Fenn Mk I Vermin trap was only an experimental trap and was never produced for general use, so far as I am aware. D-S knows all about them and will reveal all in his book when it gets published. OTC
  5. A nice thick tender piece of rump steak, cooked medium, with mushrooms and some good home made chips for me I think . . . or maybe a 'Special Mixed meat Curry' from my local chinky. And large glass of decent port to wash it down. OTC
  6. They were introduced to this country by the Romans and survive fairly well in mixed scrub woodland and marshland, surprisingly. They do not exist naturally in the vast numbers seen on larger commercial shoots, as they are artificially supplemented by vermin and poacher control and feeding, but they will happily exist with a more natural distribution. OTC
  7. Nothing heard from the cuckoos yet, from here in the middle of the country. The chiff-chaffs were here on 24 March and the first swallow was here on 5 March. OTC
  8. Even that can be done under license . The bird control units at all major airfields use recorded bird distress calls in their work, to disperse problem birds from the airlanes. OTC
  9. I make mine with a 3" mesh, 15 wide and 21 rows long but that's near enough what Ginger Dave does isn't it? It makes a good 6 foot net with plenty of bag to hold Charlie. OTC
  10. I have the following book for sale - Falconry & Hawking by Phillip Glasier. A mint hardback book from 1993, heavy book. RRP £35. Priced to sell £15 plus £6 postage. PM if you're interested. OTC
  11. We don't have reds in our woods so I don't know for certain, but I have a feeling they would be safe. Maybe one of the lakeland trappers or someone from IOW might know as there are good populations there I believe. OTC
  12. I have only ever seen a part white one, never a true ermine, perhaps I am not far enough north. I waited a good few years to see an otter in the wild too. OTC
  13. Oh no, that is really not good You cannot count that as a justifiable sport to me I'm afraid, and I am broad minded and up for most things myself. That sort of thing is another nail in the coffin IMHO - Sorry if I offend any fellow hunters by saying that but it is just the way I feel. OTC
  14. Could you not get any smaller wooden shields to put them on? They look a bit lost on those. OTC
  15. Very good pictures Mike, keep them coming. I miss being out with a running dog and ferrets but hopefully I will be back in action soon  OTC
  16. That works for me too!! The Jocks were onto something when they invented that stuff as a cure for their Buckfast headaches, typical English add alcohol to it and call WKD - defeats the object somewhat IMO. I'm teetotal now so I just enjoy watching other folks suffer these days - it's a lot more fun OTC
  17. Very true, John, I have had a mink every day for 5 days in one riverbank cage that had actually never been baited. The first one went in out of curiosity and the others just followed on. OTC
  18. That one had me chuckling to myself . . . OTC
  19. I'm not adverse to a bit of winter piking myself but I don't think I'd like that thing in the boat with me OTC
  20. It has to be steak and kidney for me, in a good gravy and decent steak. Shortcrust pastry too, none of that disintegrating puff stuff . . . a good pile of chips and gravy, maybe a mushroom or two. I also prefer the whole pie not a slice of a bigger one - it's not the same, and I feel that someone else could be getting more filling than me, so it has to be individual to be fair. OTC
  21. One of my life changing experiences, I have to say. No more marge for me - ever! I have been on straight block butter ever since I first read this thread and will never go back to plastic fat again . . . fact! OTC
  22. Dan, PM Woodga or snareman - they will help you, I'm sure. Forget the shops - there are better ways and means of getting results OTC
  23. In my opinion the best bait, bar none, for mink (and cats!) are kippers. They smell fishy and the scent carries well and do not attract blowflies like anything else seems to do and work really well. I wouldn't even experiment with anything else as the results speak for themselves. OTC
  24. LL - Surely it would be easier to net the holes and then walk the rabbits into the nets? Going in rather than coming out . . . backnetting I call it. I doubt it would work in this particular case as the rabbits don't appear to living underground, but I have used it hundreds of times myself, especially when a large strip of game cover flanks a large woodland bury - a walk in before ferreting gives the bury time to quiten down after netting up and gives a few bonus rabbits before the ferrets are even out of their boxes. You have to make sure that you see them go though otherwise all there i
