  2. Steve, I think what ZZW is experiencing is the 'lean' that the Kania has towards the heavier spring side. I have no experience in using Kania traps at all, but I do have a couple of the early types in my collection and they do not sit flat - they tip towards the spring side at the first opportunity. Maybe some experienced users of the Kania could help you out on this one? I would be interested in what they have to say as well. OTC
  3. My father-in-law lives with us so it is difficult not to be upstaged all the time. I just let him get on with it now. It's more peaceful that way! And I get more time to spend on here! OTC
  4. Have a look back through the Wildlife Photography forum pages on this site - there are a few helpful hints in there OTC
  5. You don't say how they are getting in/out of the loft? If it is a little hole into a small void (as a lot of the lofts of old B&W cottages are) then try popping a hob ferret in the hole, once they are out (and it won't take very long!!) then block it up and keep your cages set round about to catch them when they return. OTC
  6. LL - what is wrong small black arial font like the rest of us use? We can read that without sunglasses on And sort out spelling your before Aunty Kay gives you lines . . . OTC
  7. My traps were set 24 hours a day, 365 days a year back when I was 'keepering. Anything less would have been unacceptable to my first headkeeper. He was one of the old school types who swore that vermin control was THE most important task for a 'keeper. I learned the hard way! No days off, no being ill etc when you have livestock that depends on you. OTC
  8. John, Larsen trap building seems to come up a fair bit, materials for tunnel traps, baits for cages, where to buy genuine Fenn traps, and are there any real live mink in County Leitrim etc etc OTC
  9. My grandfather used to ferret rabbits at night, back in the day, my grandmother used to tell me stories about it when I was a nipper - sounds of the rabbits bumping about below ground was spooky at night apparently. He was a rough-bred poacher though, so it would have been out of necessity not from choice to do it under darkness. I have never had a go myself though, but it would be ok if needs must I guess. OTC
  10. For the last 15 years I have had a kick around with a good friend of mine on every Boxing Day morning, just a rough shoot where the bag is usually small but varied. He has done a runner this year unfortunately from his missus and I have no idea where he is so that will put a stop to it for this year I will probably end up taking my lurcher pup across the fields as usual for a leg stretch, but I will miss carrying the old gun. OTC
  11. No drinking for another year though, remember what I told you!!! OTC
  12. That's a fair size for your first one WH, let's see it when it's done. I like yours too Martin, nice shading and line work. OTC
  13. Or use spun polyester which is rotproof and needs only a single knot OTC
  14. Now you're just teasing me Chalkie!!! That's pornography to oddballs like me!! OTC
  15. Well Tomo, it all depends on condition and which type they are. Juby traps are fetching £15 - 20 a-piece for The Mk II's (those with the cast iron base) and £30 - 40 a-piece for the older Mk I type with the angle iron base. Obviously that is if they are in collectable condition - I have picked up rough users on occasion for a fiver each. OTC
  16. I used to do my stoat's tails like that Baldie but they were always stiff afterwards, how can you ensure they stay supple? OTC
  17. Exmoor Encounters Satellite channel 280 (Horse & Country Channel) 19.30 OTC
  18. Not exactly what I had in mind FastDogz, perhaps it might be of use to Lord B (whose post I must apologise for hi-jacking ) OTC
  19. Lord B, If you should find 2 of them give me a PM, I am also looking out for one to display a few of my old traps in. I will do the same for you. I am looking more for a front-of-shop cabinet, with wooden frame, sloping front and glass shelves than a glass topped table really :ok: OTC
  20. He's coming on well Nik, I bet you're pleased. I bet it's nice to get into green DPM for a change from desert cam for you too!! OTC
  21. £60 for a beating course??? Never heard anything so ridiculous in my life What do they teach you? How to listen to the 'keeper, keep in line . . . and??? Sounds preposterous to me my friend. Find a local shoot and offer your services, that is pretty much all that's needed if you are the 'right' sort of person. 'Keepers can be a funny breed though, so good luck!! OTC
  22. I have used it doubled to make short ferreting stop/ditch nets myself - I have just sent the last one I made to one of the members on here to play with so we'll see how he gets on with it. OTC
