  1. i run a mixed bag of beagles, teagles and springer beagles. it all depends on what you want to do with them really and how much help you have on a day out. the beagles are the best to speak and hold a line, they wont give up untill the fox is either lost, killed or gone to ground. if you are flushing game to lurchers or guns teagles or springer crosses are better suited as they tend not to stay going too far if charlie gets away, where as the beagles you better get ready to move because they are going to! the springer beagles tend to hit tight cover that bit harder and faster than the beagles,
  2. hunting starting to come good at last, 4 got and two more having got away without a course.
  3. one of the two we dug this morn, good strong dog fox. .8 happy days. a pic from a dig a couple of weeks ago, 13 old rims later we got down on the dog!!
  4. there are a few handy parsons down this way, not very common as lads keep there lines tight and the shit ones that are floating around get parson a bad name. if you get hold of one from proper stock you wont have an issue with them to ground. dug to some crackers, my brother has a pretty decent one but he is sizable and only work big holes, an animal to hunt cover tho which most black dogs arent so good at (not all before lads start tellin me im wrong). They are a pretty decent all rounder if you get a decent bred pup.
  5. it was your buddy that made the brave statment that his black dog would show up any running dog on any game any time.... dont think you have a case pal, settle down and less of your giving out. im far from a keyboard hunter and if you look up my threads you will see all the dogs i have and the work i do with them....
  6. not my place to judge but horses for courses mate.... your black dog hasnt seen too many COURSES id imagine, he doesnt look like a SPEED machine so your challenge is a bit of a NON RUNNER i think. keep your money in your pocket. ATB.
  7. cheers paulus, it is comming along nicely now, be interesting to see how the final scar looks, hopefully small!! http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/slievenamonworkingterrierclub/charliepic_zpsaf5e3b0d.jpg
  8. the first vet that came when it happened said stitching would be out of the question as there was a deep muscle slit there and covering it over could lead to infection underneath the skin, and with the area its in movement would most likely not let it knit again. the second vet that came a few days later said there was no infection present and all looked well and she said she would try stitch it. sedated him, scraped all the wound to stimulate the blood flow, stitched it up lovely, horse came round lifted his head and popped all the bloody stitches!! just too much movement in this area, she cu
  9. almost a month now, off all tabs and injections, wound is clean, washed every day with clean water and some EQUAIDE applied every third or fourth day to help it along and reduce scarring. its tightening up nicely and vets say it will all tighten and only leave a small scar. im very happy with the way its comming on thank god and hopefully be hunting again after christmas. (fingers crossed) http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/slievenamonworkingterrierclub/charliecutlatest2_zps6c8ca1be.jpg http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/slievenamonworkingterrierclub/charliecutlatest_zps
  10. Send me on some pics of them pertshire keeper, i might be able to get you customers for some maybe,
  11. red tape thats the trouble! always was always will be! just out of interest do you lads use whips/crops? we dont use whips really no, i have em but dont carry them very often, why do you ask that?
  12. im the same, ive been keeping beagles with years but id only have a decent pack going and then i have to go away working, end up passing them on and holding a good breeding pair and build up again when im back local. the lads we hunt with are all keeping a few now and its the right way of doing it, i had 24 upto two years ago and had to go working to scotland and it broke my heart getting out of them. we all have a handy number now and it suits grand. id put you in touch with lads that may be able to sort you but i dont think its any addition with the new rules on transporting dogs from uk to
  13. that seems to be the story accross the board with anyone i talk to, its just to mild i think, it was raining last sun when we were out but still sweating when only walking, dead and heavy kinda weather and its def not good weather for scent. ive 3weeks hols bookd from work startin this weekend so im hopin to god it improves and we get some decent cubbing done!
  14. haha, cheers perthshire keeper, no need to be jealous, there hard work at the best of times! we do have some mighty crack with them when it all goes according to plan!! i will try get a pic of the whole lot together this sunday, preferably hot on the arse of charlie leavin covert!!
  15. alright bazil brush, yea we get some great days in fairness, this year is startin scrappy enough to be honest but seems to be improving slowly, scent doesnt seem to be right just yet, think its just been to mild all along, roll on the cold mornings!!
  16. no they are held outside the cover steve, the only time they with the hounds is if the fox got back in mate.
  17. http://s909.photobucket.com/user/slievenamonworkingterrierclub/media/IMAG0358_zps7d71ee8b.jpg.html?sort=3&o=10 http://i909.photobucket.com/albums/ac296/slievenamonworkingterrierclub/IMAG0359_zpsdfeaa94c.jpg what kind of hunting are ye getting so far this year lads? everyone i talk to is off to a slow start and scent is poor so far....
  18. couple of pics of our lot last sunday after a great day. couldnt get all the dogs together for the pictures! terriers, beagles, harriers and two lurchers. http://s909.photobucket.com/user/slievenamonworkingterrierclub/media/IMAG0358_zps7d71ee8b.jpg.html http://s909.photobucket.com/user/slievenamonworkingterrierclub/media/IMAG0359_zpsdfeaa94c.jpg.html http://s909.photobucket.com/user/slievenamonworkingterrierclub/media/IMAG0360_zpsb65853cd.jpg.html
  19. many will tell you with crosses like the teagle or beagle cocker that the result is the end of the line and further breeding from them will not come to much. I keep similar crosses and also pure beagles but dont breed from the half crosses. there is always exceptions and im sure some will disagree but in general that saying def does ring true. great lookin bunch of dogs by the way. funand games all the way!
  20. it happened 5 days ago today, tomorrow will tell a good bit as to how it will end up. hopefully there is still time to try prevent it from scarring too much.
  21. Wxm has the exact same idea of patterdales, fells and lakelands as i do. the pictures you have up of each are what i would be calling any of them if i saw them. people on here keep referring to fell terriers of old as black dogs... copper coin springs to mind straight away as a prominant sire of alot of working dogs on the fells of by-gone years and he was far from black! Red and black and tan fells were used or so documented history tells us.
  22. thats not so good! the vet that is comming tomorrow has seen the pics and is suggesting a skin graft just judging from the pics but will know more once she sees it. i dont think this will be an option because id say at a guess i would want a pretty hefty bank account to afford it (needless to say i dont have) but at the same time he is a cracking looking horse and only 4 so i will obviously try do as much as i can to reduce blemishing him. what would you do at this stage if he was yours paulus ?
  23. paulus gud man, thats exactly the info i was looking for, his verdict was to leave the flap die and sort that after, get the wound sorted and infection out, i know the vet isnt a fool as he wouldnt be where he is if he wasn't top of his game but this animal isnt his usual thouroughbred so mayby scarring wasnt high on his priority list!. there is no swelling or redness and the amount of antibiotics he is on i dont think infection is a worry at this stage. i would like to know how its going to look after and could a different vet even at this stage make a better job of it?
  24. there are no stiches pulled, you can see the the the pic the stitches on the right hand side of the wound, (white) that is the total of what was put in, the horse is in since and in very good form, eatin more than ever and is taken out in the morn, wound washed, pick of grass, half the tablets in morn feed, injection and second half the tabs in the evening feed and another pick of grass on a lead rope. the wound is weeping alot as the vet said it would and thats apparently a good thing......
