Is Anyone Still Getting Call Outs?
dillydog replied to andy26's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
That's made my day Glyn, i'm doing the same tomorrow, great minds think alike -
A coward will always be a cowardl, it's not something you can train out of them. You might get a result if you keep them winning working them in small places against the odd cowardly fox but when questions get asked of them they'll revert right back to character and spew. Don't waste your time chasing a stupid look, it's hard enough to get working terriers as it is. Good luck if your going to persist in your little quest but I'm more than sure you'll fall flat on your face and kick yourself for wasting years you could of had in the field.

I keep opposite sex paired up but you've still got to know your dogs. It's no good pairing anything that doesn't get on or give each other those subtle body gestures like stiff walking in front of each other and the dead eye, it's about seeing it before it happens. I agree with your view about bringing up pups so they know their place but each dog continually tests the boundaries, just be aware of it. I never have other people's dogs, it unsettles the yard and every dog has to reassert his position again, it's better to rear your own. All said and done shit still happens, never leave a yard of

Interesting Find This Season...

I haven't got a clue, I've never seen it before and I don't want to see it again. I used the same dog on two different bitches and a couple of pups out of each bitch showed it, none of the dogs showed it and when the dogs were used on other bitches no pups as yet have showed the problem. The best I can do is to keep away from that side of the kennel and never breed from the bitches. -

It's a massive fault, my bitch has a slight version of it but her sister is worse. Her sister is ok as long as you keep her fit and the temperature is low. I know you can sort it with a vet but I wouldn't want to perpetuate it by breeding from them, if I had no choice I'd do it but I have other routes. I see the working terrier keeper as someone who does his best to keep the best stock available, we don't want to go down the road of breeding animals like bulldogs who can't even give birth naturally. -

An elongated soft palate isn't the roof of the mouth, it's basically the flap of skin that the tonsils are on. When a dogs hot or excited it fills with blood and partially shuts of the air supply, hence the grunting snoring sound. When a terriers to ground it's hot through work especially in the weather we were having and I'm pretty sure she would have been excited to. Google it or put it into YouTube and you'll get the idea. -

I can't put a link up but there's plenty on Google about it, they say it comes from Bull blood but i honestly could't say where it came from with the dog i used. It can take up to 1 - 2 years before it shows but when it does there's no mistaking it. My bitch works well and hasn't shown it apart from when she runs. When she runs she rattles in the chest or throat just as her front feet land, her sister is spot on to work but bad in the summer or when she's unfit. The bitch that i was on about i gave to a lad up north, i put him in touch with a vet but he was to tight or skint to get it done. I -

Have a look at elongated soft palate, when I used a certain stud dog I had in both litters pups that didn't show the trait until they worked. One was so bad I phoned the vet when I heard a bitch show, he instantly said "elongated soft palate" . The palate fills with blood and shuts off the air supply, you wouldn't now while the dogs at rest but it shows up when they're exited or being worked. -

Sorry to here this Fireman, always liked the look of her what a shame. Chin up mate things have a way of sorting themselves out, if i can help let me know. -
They're all related in one way or another and they get enough. Two of the bitches are 10 years old, two are 8 months old, one's two and a half and the small black bitch is about 18 months old. You've got to keep bringing them on or you'll stagnate and end up with a yard of old farts that are fit for f**k all. I've given more working dogs free of charge to good working homes than most of you have bred pups. If I think a terrier would suit you more than me I'm happy to give them away. You still have to keep a core of workers around the place just so I can go down the local and talk shit and mov

She's by Jim, all of the others are either out of Treacle or Mullet and one out of Ruby, Jim puts a different stamp on them. They're usually to big for me but they work well, she might be given to a mate this back end if the youngsters keep going in the right direction. Keep it to yourself, I don't want to upset her.......or the misses

And there in lies the fear every responsible terrier breeder has, some half cocked nugget knocking the back out of all his hard work.

I keep my terriers together all day as long as someone's about the house, the secret is to know your dogs. Plenty of work and walks and any trouble gets nipped in the bud before it happens.

It'll be interesting to find out who dug to Viper and lost him, it can't be that hard to find out. Ask that old boy I put you on too lol, he's been around forever. -

I've been to dozens of old wives tale earths, deep as hell, don't put a dog in there, bla, bla, bla. I'm certainly not knocking the old boys I'm just pointing out the terrier location is light years ahead of what it once was. Even the tools these days are far better, heavy grafts, sharp tooths, round mouths with kick plates and so on, even some of the men aren't on 60 Benson and Hedges and 10 pints a day anymore.- 105 replies

It looks like a challenge to me, it would be rude not to try it. the location systems have come on so much locating the terrier wouldn't be an issue, i'd take a few decent tools and plenty of monkeys to dig it for me while i took in the view. -
Jim used to carry a phone all day with my lads tunes on it, it got a laugh everywhere he went, he never damaged it or killed it with slobber

A brilliant dog MIK, credit where credit is due, you only get out what you put in.............that said, it had to be in them to be brought out
