  1. That's the truth DillyDog. Sometimes they're slow to figure the way to do things. But that doesn't mean they're a cull. But a quitter is a whole different animal than the dog that might go slow in getting started.
  2. Saw a few like that last May. All were bred from similar stock. Small dogs. The nutria would be just in front of them. That is pretty useless in my opinion. Like Neil said, if collar goes bunk, the dog is up shit creek without a paddle. You'd have to trench, which sucks. If a dog is going to be mute, it better be kicking ass. And if it ain't kicking ass, it better be making as much noise as possible. Without collars, a mute dog is a risk. Here in the states, we have noisy game. We can dig to the game if the dog isn't make noise cause coons and nutria are noisy as hell.
  3. Stuntman and I have ha our differences but I think it is a real pity he's getting rid or gotten rid o most of those den terriers he had. I hear they were something else.
  4. 74 to 26 just now folks. To underestimate the stupidity of the public would be a mistake. Sensationalist articles seem to find easy favor with fools. In NI it is as Fatman said, all of you need to be writing in, not just club officials. The governing officials need to feel their position is at risk if they ban field sports.
  5. I used hydrogen peroxide a lot on dogs in the past but I've been advised against it. Peroxide prevents wounds from healing. If it is used, use it only one time on a wound.
  6. Definitely not saying the jagds are better but they are very different. What you are seeing in the isles is that you're using the dogs for the same jobs, not necessarily that they work the same. Every breed I e used has been different from each other. They excel in one area and lack in another. Were I doing only ground work, I'd have a dog from the isles. Were I doing brush work, I'd have a Jagd. If I were doing a bit of both with the dog, both can do it but the Jagd would be my choice. If I were using a dog with a mink, it wouldn't be any sort of terrier. As for earthwork, I've seen many type
  7. Very clear you've never seen a Jagd work Tracy. They're nothing like any other terrier.
  8. I need to have some pups transported from the midlands to Dublin. If anybody knows a good transporter who is trustworthy, shoot me their information.
  9. I just discovered the fiskars shovels. So far, they're a fine tool. The steel handle is slick when wet though. I guess I'll tape the thing up. But otherwise it has done well for me this summer planting trees and digging the dogs. If it lasts the while year without snapping a weld, I'll be happy. I really yard on it.
  10. Amen MIK. Read the old books and you'll see that the shows did the same thing to the other working types before. Fox terriers, them the jack Russell was the working type of fox terrier, then that type became show dogs too. Kerry blues, man cheaters, sealyhams. But the working terriers are still out there as long as hunters have them.
  11. Sadly, that's not common sense Comrade. Our fox aren't tough at all, so they aren't our measuring stick. But a great number of people I've met don't care how good the bitch is. Everybody's measuring stick is different but I think fatman's measure is about where I stand. Get to the game and stay there, if the bitch or dog can, kill the game. I live in America where that's legal. Fox might be more durable than nutria(though I have a buddy who said he'd rather put a young dog on fox than nutria any day) but I expect a dog to kill the majority of nutria by the time I can get there. A bitch should
  12. Thanks Perthshire, I was thinking that may work but didnt know if the clay would just strain through. No one dogs with a fork here.
  13. Been digging in alot of very thick heavy clay lately. Do any of you have good tips for digging in thick clay, both wet and dry? It's clumping on my shovel and very hard to get the shovel through.
  14. The bitch in the last pic sure has a lovely head. Like a fox terrier almost.
  15. If I were looking for small terriers that breed true, I think I'd be talking with Shawn G. or Tim J.
  16. Doesn't matter how much work, a sharp dog will fight. Anybody who has not experienced a blood bath from kenneling two terriers was smart enough to never kennel two or he has been blessed by lady luck
  17. The white dogs working are probably exactly what the fox terrier once was before shows. Shows narrowed its head and lengthened its snout but apart from that, why would it be any different than any white terrier?
  18. I had an excellent Manchester. They have been show bred for the past century. But any terrier will figure out the ratting game. Get one if you want it for nostalgia and ratting. They're considered an endangered breed. It'd be good to get a few more out in the world.
  19. Good post Neil. The rest of you folks might do well to leave thinking to more developed minds lol.
  20. Words of wisdom once again Bryan. Even shit doesn't get worse when put to a good dog. The hoarding of good blood does much more damage to working dogs than sharing it can ever do. Even if 3 of 4 men asking for a breeding aren't holding the dogs to high standard. That 1 in every 4 will keep a high standard. Hoarding and saying that making less of a good thing is better than making a lot of a good thing makes no sense to me. Good dogs should be bred and bred often. There shouldn't ever be a time that someone wishes they bred a good dog and didn't. That's just plain stupidity. Say you and your bu
  21. Amen Glyn. I have watched my dad inbreed animals year after year with absolutely no negative affect. Many a year his tradition with the sheep has been to breed mother to son and brother to sister. He culls the old ram every year and the new son, already inbred, goes to the mothers and his sisters again. Year after year. The sheep got no worse. The ewes all stayed big. We've introduce a small ram for an outcrossing this year because we just kept getting bigger and bigger... Go figure
  22. Fellas, pick up a book on basic genetics and do some reading. It'd do you a world of good if you plan on breeding.
