  1. I want to back up this statement with the fact that hound hunters are treated the same here as terriermen there. I know what rights can be taken away. I know what property and dogs can be taken away. I think educating by way of books written may actually be the best route to winning the fight. A hell of a lot better tactic than hiding the lifestyle til it dies. The man who buried his talent in the bible comes to mind for those who read the bible.
  2. Anti's do their bit without our help or with it. I like the books. That may be all there is left in a few years. Better to have the history. The anti's aren't loosing any ground with books not being published. I haven't seen any books on Oregon bear and cougar hunting... Didn't stop the anti's from making it illegal. I do agree that certain photos should stay out of the books. But just saying that is fuel for antis. Why live in fear? "Eat, Drink and be merry for tomorrow the sport may be over."
  3. Many years ago I showed a staff dog in the ring,he was marked up a BIT,the KC judge she gave out to me most sternly for spoiling the looks of such a handsome dog by hunting RATS.Being young and foolish I got the hump for insulting my and Toro by calling us rat hunters, and told her in detail exactly what we were doing, the poor woman went pale with temper, and me and the falsely accused were told to leave the ring(the shame of it)Next month some rag mag in the UK had some bullshit about some Irish letting there staffs up pipes after rats. The idiocy of some people Liam. Your story made me t
  4. My buddy almost lost a few thousand acres because another fellow he took out brought his own dogs back to the spot and left a hole as big as a refrigerator out in the field. If that kind of shit happens all the way out here, you know it's happening all over.
  5. I like that rough coated one... Chester? Good looking animal
  6. Give the kid a chance folks. We all start out wondering how to get going. I've been in terriers a decade and I still ask some questions to old-timers that they must think I'm an idiot for asking. The kid wants to breed in the future. Go for it patterdaleboy. That in my opinion is more than half the fun of working dogs. The best advice I saw was to work the few you've got and find a stud you like down the road when the time comes.
  7. Ah. I was confused on that one too cover dog. As for a high grade... There are times where you'll have a dog work like a champ for a season and then just stop. Those don't make the grade no matter how good they had been at one time or another. It is easy to find a dog that will do it every now and then well. What is hard to find is a dog that never stops doing it well.
  8. That's actually for circumcision but it makes a nice bushwhacker.
  9. Nice to see those guys pose in a mine shaft and say they're terrier men . Ha ha Really though, what a dig. Very impressive.
  10. Trying to lay claim to credit for the apbt because their ancestors originated in europe is naive. Quality of type changes rapidly depending on who breeds it. American's have the right to claim those as their own. As far as earth dogs in America... The options are fewer over here. And being bred by different people they are going to be different than what they were originally. From what I have noticed there are a very few people over here that take breeding terriers seriously. Most just throw whatever good dogs are around together and there's little consistency in the dogs. The people who d
  11. I'd like to hunt them more. But our brush is so thick I don't think we'd know if the terriers did get one. I've followed a few with the dogs for a way down streams. I think a shotgun would be in order with how thick it is here.
  12. We've got dog thieves but hunters around here are mainly hound hunters. Terriers are looked down at. I've had dogs go missing this year but I can't prove they were stolen or just got out of the yard. Men who hunt with terriers are so few and far apart that if one comes by your place he's likely to have gone a few hundred miles or thousands.
  13. Yes, I suppose it is a very different climate for dog work over there. A week ago I visited a dog man that is considered a great here in America. He told me he's visited by kings and priests, vagabonds and drunks and he liked every one of them. Ha Ha. The political climate must make that different in America as compared to where you all live more than anything. The man was happy as heck to show me around his yard and invited me back next time I'm in his state. He's not a terrierman but he's got some damn good tree dogs. I wish I could as easily visit some of the men on here. It's not in the ca
  14. Often people on the forums will ask about so and so and his dogs or so and so and another guys dogs. What I never understand is why people don't contact the guys themselves. Ya'll are within driving distance of almost every good terrierman alive but you don't go to meet the folks yourself. Locate them and talk to them. The internet is an amazing thing. I've talked to many awesome guys including men who according to the forums seem uncontactable. All have been eager to help and nice fellows. Give them a call or shoot them an email.
  15. He's honorable for his work on a large scale as well as the small. Ready to stand for the many and give sage advice to the one. I hope all is well and the trouble over.
  16. Essentially telling someone the dog will tell you is telling someone who just told you he doesn't know how to read to read a book... It ain't gonna happen.
  17. Dee Mac, I agree a good dog owner will see the signs, and that is what the guys are saying when they say a dog will let you know. The thing is it takes experience to know what "The dog is telling you", as a beginner there is not enough experience to know what "the dog is telling you". Really the part that is tough for me as a young dog man is starting dogs. If I could get all my dogs to a point where I was wondering when to end their career, I'd be in Fat City.
  18. "Dog will let you know" in my opinion is the worst and most useless answer anyone has ever given me to do with dogs. I've never had a dog older than nine years old. Every one that made it to that age was able to work. If they don't make it to that age, they were a cull or died working... so no need for the question of when to retire them. I've seen dogs older than nine that worked but they were baying dogs... So for what that's worth. I know a guy who used to hunt quite a bit with hard dogs. He'd retire all his dogs at 6 years old whether they wanted to be retired or not. He considered it
  19. Big dogs cannot get to ground(useless)just a standard little old dog.Ye have great hunting over there American hunters and the best of luck to ye,just be carefull what ye import from over here. Some of the people exporting to the States(not all)a lot of digging men over here would not touch them with a barge pole. Same can be said about some of the women being imported.
  20. Have some faith in your fellow hunters Bad Bob. It's true that they always seem bigger than they are but if they can make it to 36 pounds what's 4 extra pounds? My biggest ever weighed was 27 pounds and I have been on thousands of coons as well. Should I then discredit those who have caught bigger? I don't know anything about Bull dogs or the crosses except what I've heard. I don't think jagds have any pit in them and I've seen some very powerfully built very hard dogs. Makes me wonder if the talk of having to add bull dog for those qualities is true. I know a guy who breeds some super sto
  21. I've had the opposite experience bulljack. Cleanspade, you bring up some interesting points. Some of those dogs Mainattraction posted seem to have nice sized chests. Very lean nice type, but strong and athletic.
