Dole money kept me in lurcher work for 7 years when that was my only purpose,i woke up one morning, the wife had left me and beggared off back to Belfast, the fridge was empty, the rent was overdue and i had nobody to wash and iron for me,me and a mate did a few cash in hand jobs, lurchers got fed, house was retaken,i lived in a caravan for a while, met somebody who took second place to the mutts and the rest is history, ive still got the jukels, son now does as much as me,daughter looks after the terriers until i need them and the missus is a diamond, who needs the lottery.

It was,nt aimed directly at you, only this week ive possibly done at least 12 miles lamping, just to get to what the dogs could come to terms with,a dig that lasted 22 hrs, albeit with a nights rest and an happy outcome, plus a bit of bushing covering a 30 mile radius,in and out of vehicles. What im saying is,there is work about for any dog,its up to the owner, owners,to put the effort in to find it,there are owners that are willing to put in the leg work and others that get rid of the mutts because the effort was beyond their bother.

If it does,nt come easily or on a plate to some, then its time to give in and find a less demanding pastime. theres another factor there too morton.theres a recession on and folk dont have 20,30 and 40 euros to be puting into their car when theyre struggling to pay electricity, gas and even basic stuff like food.you need to be a bit practical when you got kids who have hobbys/pastimes and need a few guineas for socialising.theres more to it sometimes than just being lazy. Yes the art of walking, its still free,is beyond the comprehension,or capability of some.No matter how hard the times are

Hybrid vigour often negates the lack of parental hunting lifestyle.

When they say no,go back again a few weeks later and ask again, ive had permission in the past at the 3rd time of asking.Be prepared for some downright miserable, rude and obnoxious replys to your requests.Permission now is more important than it used to be,so id go with that route, the best hunting and results are often found away from such luxury though.

Why Are The Topics About The Hunting Ban All Locked
morton replied to scottish hare hunter's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Possibly not,but when you used to get a tug from Plod there was little they could do,in certain circumstances, now your knacked and the same excuses are now an excuse to prosecute and not protect our hunting rights and lifestyle. Its far more difficult now to justify the breeding of certain jukels and test their abilities, does it make for a better and more careful owner?. -
Concentrate on the dogs education first, recall, retrieve stock breaking etc, then slowly build its fitness levels up,at 10 or 11 months id introduce it to a few easy bunnys. It will do the dog no harm to get out and about from an early age, exploring the surroundings and scents,as long as this is part of the education process and not an excuse to let the dog chase rabbits that are yet beyond its capability. When i feel a dogs ready ill then reinforce the education and wait another month to be sure.

Will All Long Ear Dogs Quit Eventually?
morton replied to pattstaff's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
The vast majority of runners never quit, when the tanks empty they will rest and run again,a dog does not have to catch everything it chases, time after time they miss, run out of steam or become unsighted.the word quit means the dog does,nt want it anymore, which is seldom the case. Must be that beddy blood in them dogs you keep. Not a drop of Beddy blood in my runners, plenty in the terriers though. -

Why Do People Think That Anyone With A Lurcher Is A Poacher?
morton replied to Old geezer's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
f***ing Jackanory... ....What posh townies would dream of drinking in a pub with lurchers in it......?.. As soon as some of these well heeled and over educated types make their brass and head to their rural idyll, the tweeds and barbours are worn as a sign of their self acceptance as the new guardians of everything that befalls them,a farmer that does,nt follow his herd around with a poop scoop,a shooter that does,nt take all the lead hes projected at fluffy pheasants, home,a gardner that does,nt doff his cap as they pass and a mongrelly mutt and its less appealing owner that as the sheer au -

If there are no rabbits about, the price of a lure machine would be better put towards, diesel, bus fares or walking boots, travel to were the game is,not to were it isn.t. Think your missing the point. In the winter....rabbits. In the summer....lure. No harm in keeping the dogs ticking over. What like road walking, lazy balmy days at the side of a river, enjoying the countryside for what it is without the need to kill for a few months, watching the youngsters that will better test a dog at the year end etc. etc.Ive had the pleasure, with a few like minded souls on a summer evening of a

What can a lure machine learn a running dog,it already knows and wants to run,a flappy rag is ok for the people to lazy to exercise their mutts and the more sensitive that want a dog that chases but are loathe to see it chase and kill, the summer shows are full of them.Get the dog on a lead and put the yardage in,then when its old enough get it behind some fur.

1st litter sired By my blue Whippet Dodger
morton replied to Chickens4ever05's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Whys that, another free attempt at selling a basically non working litter for £350 a pup. Some nuggets will fall into the trap. -
The best way to get a dog spending more time chasing is to leave it locked in the kennel?.
-
Take longer walks or feed it less, doh.
-
An honest working lineage will,on the whole, put the percentages in the offsprings favour as working jukels, the kennel they end up in will play a part, but an honest bred dog with the breeding behind it as a better chance of making the grade than one bred from parentage with a lesser working background.
