The True Cost Of Fac Air Rifles.
pianoman replied to WhiteRabbit's topic in General Airgun Discussion
There's another brilliantly sorted HW80 .22; especially as I know how marvelous a job Chris does on his rifles. This rifle is absolutely at its peak at around the 20ft/lb mark. That's all you need and the consistency and accuracy of the elderly HW80 makes it a fantastic rifle at these sort of energy figures. I wouldn't have a PCP over my beautiful HW80 any time. -

The True Cost Of Fac Air Rifles.
pianoman replied to WhiteRabbit's topic in General Airgun Discussion
I think, from reading the posts here, that, having decided on getting an FAC and putting an air rifle on it, it is a sensible thing to find an air rifle that will tune up to the power levels that; A. Make it worthwhile in the first place, like having at least 18-20ft/lbs and more. A shade over 12-15ft/lbs is neither one thing nor another. B. Having got your licence. Choose a rifle with care. One that will take the massive power increase in its stride smoothly and with no loss of precision accuracy. The ideal pellet for it must be stable enough to take the higher power also. Not all pel -

Beautiful rifle Mac. Well done mate. Good to see you have a quality rifle to enjoy. Simon -
The claim of a 77-yard unsupported shot on a rabbit is something I don't believe for a second. 40-45 yards looks a hell of a long way off when you are shooting at something as small as a rabbit's head. And that's from a prone supported position. If you can hit accurately out to 50, I'd call that excellent shooting. Given the number of posts I've read complaining about the weight of top quality spring rifles, I guess our uber-shooter wasn't using a Weihrauch springer!

I agree with barrywhite here. The .177 HW97K I have is an utterly brilliant rifle. That said though, I reckon the HW77 is the best spring rifle on the block. Mine is .22 and is as accurate as an air rifle possibly gets. HW80 is the best break barrel you can buy, no question. I've been shooting Weihrauch spring rifles for many years now and I absolutely love them so, any of choice will not disappoint you. With regard to this question of weight, I really cannot see why people seem find them so hefty as to be almost unusable! They are perfectly weighted for the job of accurate shooting with

The True Cost Of Fac Air Rifles.
pianoman replied to WhiteRabbit's topic in General Airgun Discussion
I have a beautiful Weihrauch HW80 .22 tuned to 21.3 ft/lbs on my FAC. I was well aware of the likelyhood of being unable to sell the rifle on before I had the work carried out by professional gunsmiths. But, this rifle is one in a million. It was built when Weihrauch's gunmakers cared about what they were doing and built an example that is astonishingly accurate and built with precision. It will perform precise headshots on pigeons, squirrels and rats or same plus heart and lung shots on rabbits, that kill the animal decisively and humanely fast. I can shoot effectively to distances that o -
If you have the licence already and are intent on doing the work yourself, you might contact your Police Firearms officer for best advice here and declare your intentions first. He may require you to register the rifle first before you begin, as, you cannot possess an illegally unlicenced firearm even though you have a legal FAC. As always, the law can be a bit blurred on these matters but, you cannot be held accountable if you follow professional Police advice. That's what their jobs' for!

Thats cos its only output is about 5ft/lbs Damn Daystates. Whats happened! Hi Rez. I spoke to Nigel at Wighill Park Guns, Tadcaster, this morning where my Regal came from and he's getting onto Daystate about it. He reckons they are running their guns low to avoid any legal trouble with guns that can go over the limit with certain pellets. The law can now, put them out of business if they are found to be offering unlicenced air rifles that exceed legal limits. Fair enough. Still, he is going to try to get them to collect my rifle from my home so, I cannot complain about the service he's

Daystate 177 Air Ranger
pianoman replied to Si1274's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
You can't Skot. You're dead right lad! I wouldn't trade a single one of my beautiful Weihrauch spring rifles for all the top-dollar PCPs out there. -
A&M Silencer. Absolutely brilliant. Never found any other moderator or silencer like near as quiet and sound deadening. I thought the Wiehrauch silencer was brilliantly good but this A&M is better. I won mine at a past THL Meet and never used it as it would not fit my spring rifles, but kept it anyway...thank goodness I did. Screwed it onto my Daystate Regal and the only thing you hear is the click of the hammer. Silences the air blast to nought. Highly recommend you all try to find one and see for yourselves.

Daystate 177 Air Ranger
pianoman replied to Si1274's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
I bought Helen a Huntsman Classic for Christmas. And I was so impressed with its looks and performance, I wanted one. Then I saw the Regal and thought this was an "improvement"! Apart from my main gripe about lack of power, I screwed-on an A&M Silencer I won at a past THL meet and when I tightened it securely into place, the bloody barrel rotated slightly, about a one third-turn in its breech! Not a happy state of affairs really. On the other hand, went out yesterday with my HW80 .22 FAC rifle and a tin of H&N FTT and knocked down 9 rabbits including one at 62 yards in a wind, -
Daystate 177 Air Ranger
pianoman replied to Si1274's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
I'm just off out to shoot this afternoon and I will be taking my HW80 .22 for some serious long-range rabbit work. A powerful and superbly accurate rifle that has never once let me down in 16 years of owning her. My HW77 .22 is just as good. My HW97K is just as good .177. My TX200HC .177 is just as good. I just wish my Regal was. -
I always hunt and shoot from a low, prone position so, that's my zeroing position. For .22 and .177 rifles, I zero at 25 metres which is just under 30 yards. This has proved incredibly effective with HW77 .22 which hits hard and accurately with a little holdover to ranges well beyond this figure. Even from standing and kneeling shots. It's great to know you have a superb spring rifle that gels bang-on with you, come whatever hunting situation arising.

Daystate 177 Air Ranger
pianoman replied to Si1274's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
I have to agree with Villaman about the lack of power with the Daystate Regal .177. Is this a teething trouble with what is after-all, a brand new rifle? While mine is very accurate with AA Field. 4.51mm pellets on paper targets, I have little trust that a .177 pellet that you can actually see fly to the target, in daylight, is operating at a level of kinetic power needed to humanely kill quarry reliably with each accurately-placed headshot. While I have already made a number of successful Rabbit kills with it, I have already witnessed several of my shots badly wound Rabbits in their -
I use a pair of black leather gloves and a face-veil hood for shooting and wouldn't be seen dead on a hunting foray without them. Cushions the rifle forestock nice and snug as it rests on the palm of my leading hand and gives a lot of control. Also, human flesh appears as very bright to most animals eyesight, even in shade and your face and hands are a dead giveaway unless you cover them.

Can Anybody Help Shed Some Light On This Gun For Me Please
pianoman replied to hobble's topic in General Airgun Discussion
I remember this rifle from my young schooldays when you could buy one on mail order through your mum's Great Universal or Littlewoods Home Shopping catalogues! They were made from about 1968 and were still in production during the early 1970s. So yours will likely be a G34 of around 45 years old, made, approximately, between 1968 to 1972. I had a look at Google and TW Chambers seem to have a list of available spares for the G34 that will be a big help for you . -
Spring air rifle shooting.
pianoman replied to pianoman's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
There really isn't a mystique to shooting a spring rifle with all the superb accuracy of a PCP costing many times more Rez. The HW98 is a genuinely fine rifle in whatever calibre you like to shoot with so, a big part of your battle for precision accuracy with it, is already won. The rest is in the techniques I've tried to describe here and they don't take long to come to grips with. Once you can pick up and shoulder your HW98 in a gentle, unrestrictive hold that allows the rifle to recoil with as little restriction as possible, you'll be capable of hitting your target precisely without even ha -

Absolutely agree with you webster! My HW80 is .22 and I will never sell, replace it or tire of shooting/hunting with it. When the wind's a bit strong it keeps on with perfect accuracy as the pellet (H&N FTT 5.53) flies very fast and flat and hits very hard indeed. She never runs out of air and keeps my out shooting in wind and weather conditions where any other sub-12 .22, even as accurate as my HW77, would blow all over the place. She gives me an incredible long range capability too. I've shot rabbits clean through the head out to 100 yards without hesitation or worries with this rif

How Long To Stay Loaded With A Springer?
pianoman replied to RemyBolt's topic in General Airgun Discussion
This is where self-discipline comes in and you keep yourself aware of you rifle's cocked and loaded condition at all times in the shooting field. Even if you have to actually remind yourself. There is no place nor excuse for complacency with any rifle or firearm. But to answer the O.Ps question objectively. Yes, you can leave the rifle on cock for considerable lengths of time without harm to the spring. But you must be aware once you cock it, that it is now, truly unsafe. -
How Long To Stay Loaded With A Springer?
pianoman replied to RemyBolt's topic in General Airgun Discussion
Several hours between shots. There is a suggestion that, a spring, under prolonged tension when cocked, will compress to a point where it will not decompress or return to quite the same dimensions when released from tension and thus, has softened a little and a certain level of power be lost. In my experience of shooting spring rifles, this is not so and you can cock the rifle and hold it thus, under such compression, for several hours in a session without loss of noticeable power. It is the constant use of moving forces of compression and decompression under firing and reloading that even
