  1. Stoat. Its the time of year for them, iv bolted a couple so far. Iv not known them fight back though, just normally hiss a bit then bolt.
  2. Can you make some space in your inbox please? Cheers, Kev.
  3. All you can do is try. Dont let its history or age put you off. Its only a year old. I wouldnt start a dog on serious work till that age or older anyway. Especially a saluki x as they mature slower than most. If you do get it, spend 2 weeks taking it everywhere with you to get some sort of bond started then take it out ferreting. See how it goes. If alls ok i would start on the lamp around xmas time.

  5. I hear you and agree BUT what can be done/ said to get out of shit if you are driving home with a dog plus hares in the car and you get a tug? I disagree with dumping the catch but it is a foolproof way of keeping your car on your drive and your dogs alive. Maybe as has been said, dump the catch, get the dogs home then go back to collect but if your an hour or more from home its a lot of fookin about. You can only say theyve been shot and retrieved if they have a hole in them AND you have shooting permission AND you have the gun in the car.
  6. There are dogs out there that wont look at a rabbit. There sort of "below" them. See a hare though and watch the sparks fly! So keep it on a lead! Lol!
  7. Salukis do take a long time to mature mate. And 11 months isnt very old. I would just stick to play for the time being. Make sure she gets plenty of exersize too cos they will mess about something cronic if they havent let off enough steam.
  8. Its been going on a lot in the new forest, southampton, bournemouth sort of areas too. Bit in the cuntrymans weekly this week about it. 2 teenagers got nicked and let go again. Been going on for a fair while. Would be nice to catch a wild mink and let them try to nick that. Dirty little b*****ds!
  9. Same. Get him out now ferreting. Let him learn that he should keep out the way while netting up and that ferrets are off the menu. Let him smell the holes and and get used to whats going on. Its 2nd nature to you but its a huge learning curve for him. Let him see and hear the rabbits hit the net and once youve killed the rabbit, let him sniff at it. If he tries to pick it up stop him gently, its a bad habit that you dont want him getting into. All the time he is playing with the dead ones as an adult his attention isnt on the job. Once he is a bit more used to it all you can let him tackle a f
  10. Success mate. If he finds a rabbit in the bushes and has a good chase make sure you give him plenty of fuss and he will do it again. Next time you see he is onto one and following a scent say "get on boy" or "find him" or whatever you say. After a few times he will associate that phrase with searching and will search everytime you say it. Plenty of praise when he does what you want. Keep it play for him though. If you have problems get out and hide a few dead rabbits about the place then take him for a walk and let him find them. Plenty of praise when he does find them and away you go.
  11. I was thinking more along the patterdale or jrt type but yup thats true mate.
  12. We keep hearing about terriers crossed with whippets. I was just wondering if anybody had done a terrier x greyhound? Anyone?
  13. I just use a rope lead. The bit that goes round the dogs neck i put round my wrist instead. Then the handle part goes through the coller and back to my hand. Light up a rabbit and let go of the handle. Works well enough for me. Some people dont like to work a dog with its coller on, which would make my method a bit dificult! Lol! I like boyos idea, might try that. Strong stuff gear is something a lot on here rave about so it must be good, iv never used it myself so i cant comment.
  14. Nothing to do with lamping but i bought a motor off b and g autos in peterlee and it was the biggest bag of shit iv ever owned and the mothers c**ts wouldnt do a thing to fix it. Brand new mot but still hadnt had a service in 20 thousand miles judging by the colour of the air filter, brake pad missing, brake caliper f****d, a fuel problem that no one can trace. If i still lived up that way i would close the c**ts down with something nice and hot. Funnily enough someone there had a saluki x.
  15. Brinded nets are good stuff. I had a load of purse nets off him. He does his own quickset system. I dont know much about it but i know they work well. Il get a few myself one day.
  16. Bushings a good bit of fun mate. A nice pack of dogs and go for a walk. Iv got a patterdale x plummer and a beagle x jrt for flushing stuff out of the brambles and iv got 4 long dogs to do the chasing. They sometimes forget what there meant to do and iv had the patterdale x trying to keep up with rabbits while my beddy whippet is frantically trying to get out of a bramble patch cos hes heard the terrier yapping like a crank as he goes! Lol! Its all light hearted and not meant for big bags. If i wanted big bags i would be lamping or ferreting but its a nice bit of fun and an enjoyable way of s
  17. That should do anything mate. Good x. Good size too. Some dogs are fussy. If they enjoy big ears thats what they want. A rabbit isnt enough of a challenge so they cant be arsed but if they see a big ears they will be on it like a bullet. If not then your mates been f****d.
  18. Depends on how old the dog is and the size. If it is whippet size its a rabbit dog that will take the odd other thing. If its greyhound size its capable of anything you want it to do. What percentages beddy, whippet and grey are in it?
  19. Let it join you for the odd ferreting trip this season. Net up = easy rabbits = confidence. Dont do any serious work till next season, the pup will be mature enough by then both physically and mentaly.
  20. Mart if they were together for 5 minutes maximum and they didnt tie its more then likely there is no litter anyway mate. I would consider getting the scan first and if all clear youve saved 55 notes.
  21. I use the local butchers mate. Any dog needs a variety of meat, red AND white in equall amounts. And as you mentioned veg as well. Personally i dont see much point in mincing it, dogs are more than capable of crunching up bones to eat a carcass. In fact i would say its better for them because they are using their neck muscles to pull chunks off and they are cleaning their teeth as they chew it. Altho i suppose it would take up less freezer space.

  23. RP what dog do you already have mate? How old? Whats it doing so far? A whippet x greyhound is a good thing. I would be tempted to look for something with a bit of collie in there too as it adds brains.
