  1. When training & working a young running dog for rabbits only, how many does it require for it to be worthwhile & get that young dog to a reasonable standard? Then how do you go about this ? Personally I like a slow and steady supply of rabbits .Once a young dog gets to a certain point I like to take it to a area that holds high numbers of rabbits & use it either one out or as one of a pair when it is coupled with a older dog .A controlled outing is what I'm aiming for on the first of two trips where I usually work the dog to long or purse nets .Then I wait a few months ,until
  2. Off subject I know but wow that's some picture ,the dog thinking what is your next trick, rabbit head tilled to one side to see just how far the "wolf" is behind ,a game that has played for many many years before it became just a hobby.Nature at her best Oldphil .
  3. This has reminded me of yet another story ,that happened about 7 or 8 years ago about two lost pig dog's that went on a killing spree lasting several months which resulted in them killing hundreds'(800) of high country sheep . The farmer lay in wait unrewarded due the mountain terrain & huge area they were living in . The dogs would kill here one night only to pop up many miles away the very next night to kill again .The dogs were thought to be living in some of the rock caves found in that area of the Canterbury high country .Hunters were called in ,choppers armed with thermal cameras,
  4. Interesting & reminds of story relayed to me by a close mate who lives in FNQ(Queensland). While he was fixing a fence on his cattle station above Cooktown after the" big wet".He caught a movement out of the corner of his eye that showed a large x bred bitch that showed some dingo blood in her lineage, slowly walking up while growling and showing her teeth .She was then joined by two other big males who all walked up till they were about 10 meters away .At this point they spread out a little and the two males then also started to glowl, then the bitch moved to within 5 meters .The only thin
  5. Nice sir ,very nice ,there are types of fish in your post I've never heard of ,let alone caught but that's more to do where I live .I live in the South Island where we don't have rays but on my trips to the far north of the north island we have caught lemon rays up to 20lb & huge black stingrays up to a max of 210lbs ,one of those as a bye catch is plenty for a life time ,oh the burn is huge & leaves one buggered ,arms feel with lead, back hurts & the legs still have the burn hours later but as a angler I wouldn't have it any other way .Great pictures of a lovely view always adds t
  6. In Nz we have a population of "wild ferrets " some are off spring from ferrets that came over when settlers wanted some of their home country game animals since they missed the old country .These ferret populations were bolstered by others that had escaped when rabbiters kept and worked ferrets at the peak of the rabbit boom. The keeping of ferrets now has a raft of rules & laws that have made finding replacements almost near impossible ,so at times I've been tempered to catch a wild ferret in the hope of taming it down and then work them .This came with at times some major draw backs in
  7. I've, after many years of hunting, have learnt not apply the "why don't they do it this way" and except that its THEIR way ,arrived after many years chasing the game of choice .I really enjoyed watching the video ,some skilled dogs there for sure & as already stated very interesting. Any type of chase on that ground is boarding on being dangerous, a broken leg would be common I'm guessing ,and I doubt many dogs would make old age. This might be the reason as to the number of dogs being worked at one time ,in the advent of a mishap, there are plenty to carry on next week .Cheers for sha
  8. Yes you can tell by looking at the kidneys. I was showing a farmer yesterday a rabbit that one of the dogs had brought back that had been dead a couple of days .It had died along with several others over about a month . I thought of RHVD2 and this was confirmed by viewing the internal organ's that appear full of blood ,the kidneys look a darker color than usual .
  9. I have a big bushing bitch whom is a straight Lab x Visla ,she has the lab nature & would eat her own back leg if it was offered to her ,but she has the pointer work mindset ,she never stops ,has a really good wind nose & finds and jumps more than her share of rabbits.I would of thought her size would be a disadvantage but she seems to handle heavy cover very well .Id love to try a ESS x visla for a busher /rabbit finder. I had at one time a golden lab x golden Retriever who had the long body of the retriever that allowed him to motor also he was a great rabbit finder & caugh
  10. He's lost a few ,in the same manner that one can lose a ferret .I don't know if the recall is that strong in some of the videos I've watched as he just puts the carry cage up to the mink and at times I've seen him lift up the muskrat with the mink hanging off the other end & drop the lot into a field cage .However these were mink he had brought from a mink farm & on one of the last videos I watched, it was his plan to breed and handle young kits making them better to handle in general, because I think he's been fanged a time or two .lol I bet the wee feckers can BITE!!
  11. Green grass crop for making hay or baleage ,any green crop in the early stage of growth ,wheat ,barley etc ,winter crops also hold a lot of water ,rabbits love to hide in these places during the winter & early spring and to get them to break out is near impossible .The one thing I've noticed is how wet and cold the dogs are when they return from the bounce up to look deal , if they make contact with a rabbit ,at times if the dogs get some heat on bunny will pop out .The other thing I've noticed is I normally don't find many if any runners yet there has been several nest holes dug, our rab
  12. I totally agree ,humans have impacted on habitat, also the growing of thick wet green crops causes young rabbits to become wet and that can lead to colics which kills off any that develops this condition .
  13. I think no matter what country worldwide if it has rabbits ,rats wild cats ,possums ,they all take cover in any bush piles handy.
  14. No ,have been feeding both dogs & ferrets on rabbits a couple times a week from areas that have some signs of RHVD2 being active, for number of years in New Zealand with no side effects what so ever,as well I taken rabbits out of areas effected with RHVD2 for the table .
  15. I found this on the internet ,interesting reading. Rabbit numbers decreased by 88% in the east Midlands and 83% in Scotland between 1996 and 2018. They fell 43% across the whole of the UK over the decade to 2018, with the latest scientific survey recording no sign of the declines slowing. “Rabbits are in a lot of trouble,” said Pip Mountjoy, Shifting Sands project manager at Natural England. “They are actually an endangered species in their native region on the Iberian peninsula. It’s surprising for people that rabbits are important in some ecosystems. We think of them as a pest but
  16. What else do you feed them ? I always make sure my ferrets clean up the whole rabbit before I give them a fresh one .The only advice I could give you is to give your ferrets some hot liver from a freshly killed rabbit while out working after a couple of hours & I also swop them around after a couple of hours work during the hot summer ,saves them taking a nap on me .
  17. I can feel the madness & it runs deep ,given that who the hell wants easy ,it just wont do I say wont do.....
  18. I think you get a better dog that's had a steady number of prey over a period of time rather than one that's had a great number over a short period then nothing for months, so I think there is room for some conservation by limiting ones catch where possible .This maybe easier said than done in the UK .
  19. There lye's the answer the rabbit can make a come back from RVHD2 even in areas that now has only a handful left , if they are left alone for a few years however given the amount of people chasing them over your way its a dim hope at best .
  20. Well the mad prick has at least one or two working brain cells Aussie whip lol
  21. I surprisingly I catch a lot of fish on this bloody bright soft bait .
