  1. I would like to touch on the subject of breeding within pure bred dogs .These have been bred close by kennels or the dog show owners ,how close I'm not sure but enough to get both behaviour and appearance to show constantly the same . This close breeding has lead to a huge raft of health problems within in these breeds ,some of these problems are major ,costing their owners thousands in vet care and treatment, this has also resulted in some dogs having to put down. We now have so many breeds not fit for purpose , unable to deliver puppies without a C section, unable to reach old age without
  2. I don't think she's very interested....lol ....??
  3. Yes , RHD does behave in that manner, in some spots the rabbits found there have a higher immunity level than others that live near by. These animals breed some kits in a litter that can carry that same high level .It took just over 20 years for the population to rebuild & to have a % in the late 80s of unaffected rabbits & in some areas in NZ there are now more rabbits than there was before RHD, but it does take time ,everybody forgot about them while sighting only a few sitting out in the sun or run over on a busy main road ,but breed & build they did unnoticed ....as they alway
  4. Yes the areas that I'm employed to rabbit on, now has low numbers, due to my efforts over the last 25 years .On the one hand I'm pleased ,I've done a pretty good job & on the other I know my operation now, does not require the big pack of specialist bushing catchers I have & at my age most of the dogs may well see me out .I could of started to down size the number much earlier & not started the 5/6 young pups as I did this year, but I can't or I'm not quite ready to hang up my boots just yet ,however the years of pig hunting & other outdoors sport has taken a toll. If I dro
  5. I can only comment on the RVHD and the effect it had on New Zealand rabbits,20 odd years ago it killed thousands apron thousands(95%) but very slowly the pockets built up to about 85-90% of the population uneffected .Then those pockets got so large the government decided to bring the K5 stain in from Australia, a couple of years ago ,this has failed to effect many rabbits if any ,so they plan on dropping 1080 poison via aerial over huge amounts of land .This will check the growth but its very costly & has been all attempted before .I honestly think the rabbit will recover in your country
  6. As long as you are happy nothing else matters ,that dog has some leg on him for sure and if he's got a forward temperament it all should be a walk in the park .....
  7. I can keep a huge number of working dogs ,I do so because I can & I enjoy it ,its the whole point of the game ,and without doubt I can say given some age and plenty of work they all do improve .Some don't develop much passed pack fillers ,some become good solid workers and the odd one develops into a great dog ,with these top dogs I've noted something special as a pup in fact its as thou they don't have much of a pup stage at all. They behave like a adult from a very early age ,however I always expect nothing and treat them with "kid gloves" softly, softly. Of all of the top dogs I have
  8. That look you get when ya don't give 5 f**ks =priceless sir ,priceless.
  9. you can get them in a yellow light ,but I like the white light due to working brown top grass where the yellow light does show a rabbit well enough for me but I've changed to a red LED full time .
  10. I was wondering if anybody used Airedale across their hounds to add more punch or is that not needed because the hounds have enough already ?
  11. I was wondering what breed /type is the broken coat all brown dog /hound, flasher2 ?
  12. yes ,the working dog world has its fair share of passionate hunters who's views are very strongly linked to what they have seen & done .
  13. This post is not in anyway pointed at anyone ,its just a general comment, but I'm sorry if I've upset anyone and taken the subject off topic . I like to see others give comment after some expedients ,not out of a book or seen it on TV, the wise never give opinions on something they know little about & there are plenty of wise persons on this site ,I tip my hat towards you fellas .
  14. Might I ask how pigs you have killed or ran dogs with ? I'm just going to comment on one major mistake I see wrong with your post ,that is dog usually gets killed before they know they are headed for the happy hunting ground ,now its not fact that a dog gets killed with the first or second blow or even the 9th ,the time line they get killed at can be anytime ,from the start of the attack to the end ,bad luck can play a part in all this . You have given a example of the great Dane ,you would need to search for a very long time to find a Great Dane or even a Dane x because kiwi hunters don't r
  15. I don't think that's true, a dog that has caught plenty of pigs will have the scars to show for its efforts ,even if its just a bailer. One out a big boar can make short work of a dog in fact I lost(killed) several really hard dogs due to battling a boar out of ear shot ,once the dog gets a bit buggered the boar takes control & gives the dog a real going over .At times we would find the site of the battle later that day ,at other times we would find the dead dog during the summer by the smell a few weeks later .Its just a gamble finding a dead dog in our heavy bush ,there are a million pl
  16. that's a very tidy dog ,thrown to the beagle side ?
  17. Our southern coast is much this this ,and we have lost a number of fishermen from the ledges ,once two guys were climbing down a heavy duty rope which had become rotten over time ,it broke & both guys dropped straight down bouncing off the rocks to disappear into the sea never to be seen again .On the southern tip of southland the seas roll up from the roaring 40s big ,bad and very cold ,still we climb down cliffs to fish means the area wont get much fish pressure ,we just do so when conditions allow this to be done safety.
  18. When my albinos change their coats ,the color is snow white ,given a few months and the color of any bucks is then a light shit yellow .Now that's slightly different from the pissy stain orange, and monkey piss yellow .lol
  19. A interesting overview sir ,and I would have to agree, the first 3 inches coupled to speedy or physically gifted dog is one that gets the job done ,no matter where that might be .A dog that's knocked up all the time ,while breath taking to watch, quickly becomes a liability ,due to huge amounts of time spent out of action .As the saying goes "time is money" and since I also make my living off ,the backs of my dogs ,I need them out in the field for me to do so ,anything less doesn't work for me ,nor does huge vet bills . .
  20. I have found that by & large sea fish pull lots more string than our fresh water trout ,with them its all about the brain ,tricking them ,even if they fall off ,is the whole purpose for me ,also they look nice with different pattern spots on each fish .
  21. I bred my whippet over a PB Irish Terrier bitch & we kept and ran a couple of off spring ,they were nice dogs but failed to be a inprovement on the parents .
  22. To all the goodie dogs out there ,some still here ,others long gone ,to them I tip my hat ,you have my respect ,job well done .Now Im done posted enough for at least two months .......later TB
  23. Im a believer in those coats now after trailing them for a couple of weeks ,great for thin skinned running dogs ,they just love warm .Unsually I spend time and effort just before the winter placing straw in every kennel along with sacks over the door but it never lasts more than a couple of weeks & sacks eaten arent a owners friend .
  24. The fawn dog with the pricked ears between the two brindle hounds was a bull kelpie & was killed by the black boar above .Since we chose not to carry a firearm we had to have enough dogs to get the job done as at times the pack would be spit and chasing two pigs at the same time .A old boar with good tusks that I thought was dead ,waited untill I reached down and grabbed my hand and bit the end of my trigger finger down to the bone and pulled it almost off ,the end was left hanging there with just the bone poking out ,a quick repair job with the dog gear saw a couple more pigs caught ,lat
