Wow I haven't checked this post for quite some time but Id like to say there are some very nicely put together dogs & pups posted here ,its bloody good to see that the working busher is alive and well out there .Great work people .

After all the pups had gone ,a guy whom I know contacted me asking if any were left, as he was looking for a running dog .I thought about the matter over night & replied he could have one of the two I had planed on keeping .Arrangements were made for him to travel the 6 hours down to mine at the weekend .He dually arriving bringing with him his family ,wife & daughter & two bushing type dogs I had bred and given to him two or 3 years ago .The dogs were in great shape ,family pets that are worked on trips away .They were all nice people & when he stated the pup was to be his dau

Sadly this is so true, to arrive at a type some out side that would have to be culled & the owner would need the space & time to keep the lot of breeders and their off spring .A dog breed of two pure parents starts the breed ,and with 7 breeding's of the off spring , you have your self a pure bred dog .Of course from that point on pups that were born showing any throw backs would need to be culled to get the standard type ,same goes with any with temperament's not standard. It doesn't take long for a breed to be wrecked as we now see with so many pure bred dogs ,some are no longer fit

I think Nellie is about 41/2 months old now & she hasn't grown much at all ,a bit more length in the loin that's about it .She looks like 100% whippet and shows no kelpie at all ,however she's very very zippy ,runs tight corners and can change direction on a dime ,I will update some pictures in the next couple of days .I will use her along side the ferrets & long nets.

I see these type of posts going sadly wrong because some must claim have to have the very best ,better than any of the rest as the song goes ,but is it really that important as long as the owner is happy with their own dogs ,why should it matter to anybody else .I find my happy place, like many others ,when I'm out with my dogs ,how good they might be compared to some body else's dog is just not that important to me ,I just don't care & I'm happy enough if I see a good dog working that doesn't belong to me, to pass on praise to the owner about the dog ,however just remember a dog doesn't -
Now that is the type of dog I like ,how's he bred? love the head & the eye color.

No its real rocky under ground ,its flint rock and its every where up central ,that and knee high thyme on the steep unworked ground .Also its fair to say even when its possible to dig the wire in ,they don't ,so in some cases its nothing more than bad practice . On the smaller blocks the mower hits the wire ,breaking a single wire down at ground level ,that's all it takes ,since its down at rabbit level they soon find & use this to move out to feed .I feel shuting them out ,does nothing to effect the population ,they just build up next door & breach the fence sooner or later .Drives -

1080 is still being used in huge amounts these days but possums in bush land are the target ,paid for by the nz government .A number of years ago rabbit boards that were funded by a 50% 50%spit between rates from landowners and the government, used 1080 but those boards have been long disbanded .There is the odd drop done by some land owner's but its no longer the go to option because the block has to be destocked for about 2 months, and its costs ,so more user friendlier methods are more popular now. Most of these problem population's are living in or close to towns ,so shooting & poiso -
Nice stamp of a collie there ,nice length of coat ,I don't fancy a collie that doesn't have cocked ears or has a longer coat ,however the ears and coat doesnt make a great working dog nor a poor one .

To be truthful the Central Otago hills shouldn't have been farmed in the first place ,its all rocks with little top soil, great for growing grapes these days .It is for the most part covered in canes of bier and weeds. Driveable tracks are far & few ,a horse would be useful & this is what the old rabbiters used to carry supplies & traps out to their camps during the winter when they were trapping for skins . Story's are told of whole farms being brought with a cheque from the sale of rabbit skins in the 40s & 50s .Rabbit population's exploded during the war years when all -

Yes ,slowly at first the pockets started to grow & have now reach high levels up from 80% kill on the first release. The virus still does a great job in 90% of the land in New Zealand . While my dogs enjoy a feed of rabbit once a week I couldn't feed they full time on it ,it fails to have any real fat that, dogs require for stored energy. Dogs are about the only animal who can eat up to 40% of their diet in animal fat ,because I work mine hard I have to feed them well ,so I have an arrangement with my friend who has a home kill butchering business ,that I visit when I get a text once- 67 replies

My hobby turned into a full time job about 25 years ago & to me about the only differences is I now get paid .I work for myself as a contractor ,I cover 100,000 Acers,as long as I'm active how I get the job done & what hours I work is up to me ,Im paid a set amount per week 52 weeks a year .we don't do anything over the lambing which lasts about 4 -6 weeks .I don't do much night work off the 4 wheel motor bike. This local block doesn't have near the rabbit numbers it had when I first arrived when it was common to get 30 in a afternoon bushed out of all manner of cover .It took me abo- 67 replies

that is so true ,no ones interested in chasing them ,ferreting to dogs or net ,they would rather chase bigger game animals so landowners for 99% of the time have to pay .A mate who came out here from wales by the name of billy Barton now makes his living chasing rabbits ,he relayed to me it was like living a dream & he had to poke himself to make sure that it wasn't . -
Of late here in NZ ,there has been a number of news reports highlighting the looming rabbit problem ,it shows footage of HUGE numbers of rabbits running around ,some are in townships ,others in open ground, all those interviewed agree the problem has grown .this footage is something to be seen .I will see if I can find the link , come take a look . https://l.(!64.56:886/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.newsroom.co.nz%2Fpage%2Frabbits-its-as-bad-as-its-ever-been%3Ffbclid%3DIwAR2i4UTpFcTDaBE41gdlgZ8onbZCDTUigoUx4hAAtHltafClfQkGDtEO50s&h=AT1AYfJhuqMPHlptQ4ZtMHOSLk0FvXRKLDAajxPPnQ6OGD0z4

I spend most days working & walking with what dogs I own, as long as they earn their keep I'm happy enough to keep them ,I'm paid for results and that's expected. The dogs aren't pets ,none live indoors nor are they kept in one big court, they have their own kennel and run. All of this has come about because it either makes life easier or it works for ME. It certainly wouldn't work for others ,we all have our own views however just a reminder ,Dogs don't know how they are bred ,humans are the only ones that worry about that sort of stuff ,a dog doesn't know nor does it care ,it just knows

They have now reached the age of 8 weeks old ,the bitches milk came in and not only did she feed all ten pups she gained alot of weight over this period. It was very unexpected ,you never just know with dogs .Will update the pictures Of the two I'm keeping .They were ragging a sack today a lot of growing, head shaking had me smiling .Lovely pups that should make reasonable workers ,so they will be allowed to grow out for 6 months old then I will take a look at them then, getting though or under fences ,across small creeks & ruff ground is on the books soon .all to make them ready to come o
