  1. well was just watching, as you do, and the other two jills came on board with her, one jill took one kitt back inside, there's about 4 inside with buster the castrated hob, then the two jills got busy, licking the kitts and general mothering, while "brenda" the mum slept, then manky and smudger, snipped hobs, climbed on board also and helped out, its certainly opening my eye's to ferret behaviour and how they are a true "family unit" thats, buster, foxy, vixen, brenda and half a dozen kitts
  2. well the ferrets were really feeling the heat this morning, but spraying them, and the frozen bottles just was'ent enough for the jill that has kitts in the court, so she carried them all outside to the "cat hanger" bit concerned that they are so high up, but were see how it goe's
  3. APART FROM PUTTING IN FROZEN BOTTLES OF WATER FOR THEM TO LAY AROUND, IN THE CAGES AND INSIDE COURT, I ALSO PUT THE GARDEN HOSE ON "MIST" AND SPRAY THEM DIRECTLY IN THE OUTSIDE COURT, THEY LOVE IT, sorry, just seen caps lock was on, and aint re typing it
  4. so, put my first lot of snares out on thursday evening, my permission is a football pitch, fenced, surrounded by parkland, at first I was hoping to be able to snare the fence, but due to the thickness of the bushes that run along it, this was impossible, hence I made some tealers, placed 30 down, on the runs that were coming from under the bushes, these snares need to be placed and lifted the next morning, as its a public area of a daytime. well on pickup, very poor results, one rabbit snared, and the early morning crows had, had a pick at him, one snare missing, inc tealer, just the peg le
  5. Of course it makes sense Stubby..of the three Jills I have here only one has been mated...for the very reason you talk about..and I will keep two maybe three Jills from the offspring..and a pal will keep two hobs..the two other Jills as good workers as they are have been in with a vasectomised hob.. But that aint really the issue in this debate...and I will ask you a question and I would like an honest answer please..so here goes..God forbid it..but if you arrived home from work tomorrow to find all of your ferrets gone..no trace..where would you look to replace them ?? Now bearing in
  6. I too, belive ferrets can get better with time, but trouble is, we aint all got the time or space, looking at it this way, so far I have 17 kitts, plus my original 9, now come ferreting season, we take out maybe 4 to 5 ferts, 2 will be from my proven workers so the 3 youngsters will be entered, and mentally marked on their performance throughout the day, so thats a toal of 6 ferreting trips to check out each youngster just once, some will fair better than others straight away, and these, tend then to be taken out more, the others getting sold on as either pets, or to new comers to the game, th
  7. if you check your pm box, I pm'd you, minutes after you posted the question, but incase you missed it, I suggested contacting Ianb via pm, and asking him if you could send a cheque/postal order I don't think there is a need for a poll Ian just revert it back to how it was. gotta love your answer pat , as for sometimes being too firm, I try to stay that way always, the girls prefer it to FLOOPY sorry mate, but by the time I went to deleate it this morning, magwitch had added his post, on a totally different subject, didnt want anyone thinking I was skirting an answer, so le
  8. This is the best hunting site on the web in my opinion been a member for quite sometime and even been banned a few times no argument there. People can donate if they so wish to its a great site! but to make people donate so they can sell a few bits and bobs is wrong. Ive got no gripe with you Steve at all but you still owe me a breakfast I think you do a good job Steve maybe a bit too firm sometimes. nearly had me choke then on my coffee pat
  9. I've just made two new 25 yrd nets into quicknets but to get the amount of bagging i wanted they are only about 15 yrds now. Dont think i've done owt wrong as they look the part and previously i've had rabbits bouncing of them. this happens when nets are purchased, that dont hold 100% of bag in them, but maybe only 25 or 50%, thus when set out on a quickset system, they become shorter, it allways pays to buy good quaility nets
  10. I had been asked to deleate this post, but as magwitch has put the question forward, I'll try to answer it, best I can Im a moderator of the forum, we dont get paid for it, we do it for free, but same as you guy's, we have rules to follow that are set out, even before I came along, so say I turned a blind eye to ferreters selling ferts on the ferret section, theres plenty of other mod's that can deleate the post and give a warning for posting, five warnings and people can get banned if this section was to allow it though, then you know that all the other sections would want the same deal,
  11. who did you mean, the ferret or magwitch
  12. friedrice is right everyone, he asked a straight forward question, and recieved an answer, but by doing so, along the way of other replies, it was brought to my attention of my silly mistake (yes, mod's are human too ) its sorted now as far as Im concerned, so lets leave it at that shall we
  13. there's two thoughts here, some think BEW's are a breed to themselves, other say its a silver that has moulted out the gaurd hairs, I 've seen alot of posts, from members, saying they breed a pair of BEW's and got silvers from them, this would lead you to belive the BEW's were silvers either way, Im sure driod will be able to give you more info, but BEW's and silvers are recessive and should not be paired together, although others will tell you to go for it
  14. ok I'll hold my hands up, it was a simply mistake that I didnt spot he was not a donator, but thanks for bringing it to my attention, the simple solution, I have pm'd the member and given two options, either become a donator, or remove the link so I'll offer all you lot the same option, now everyone should be happy, at the end of the day, I saw a member, who was doing some bloody good carpentry, and trying to make a buisness from it, not just selling a one off dog kennel or something, and as for the link to the man with a van, friedrice, no I dont get commission on it, an old friend

    seagulls

I'd check first If I were you, not all species of seagull can be "got rid off"
  16. Ive still yet to build my one yet john, but seeing the pictures is going to help, one thing, are you going to mesh over the open area of the trap door, outside of the tunnel, otherwise whats to stop earlier captured rabbits jumping out, when the next drops in
  17. probably around two and a half inches, had a mate who owns a wood yard make it up for me, and it was the only size hole cutter that he had
  18. just to update this, there were infact only 5 kitts (6 if you count the stillborn) but as I was trying to be as quick as poss on looking, I probably counted one twice, anyhow here's a couple of pictures, taken yesterday,
  19. I know what you mean mate. But what would you do if the landowner asked you to shoot the does and the young ones And if you didn't you'd end up losing your permission. We all know how hard it can be to get good ground to shoot on. what you are saying is right and i see your point of view..But listen up the farmers grow there crops and when there ripe they harvest them.. thats what i think about my crop{rabbits] we should harvest when they are ripe but they arnt your rabbits or your crop, untill they are dead, they belong to the landowner, therefore they could only ever b
  20. so, just a small update, all the ferrets are doing fine, still 12 kitts, and I tend to inspect them as little as possible, while watching them today, all the ferrets raced to the court door on my approach, expecting a treat, and two of the babies were dragged from the sleeping box, they were probably suckling at the time, "buster" the castrated hob, saw them and gently picked them up and returned them to the box,

    Help!

but you did'nt critasise him, you immeadiatly said it was genetic and how is he risking ill babies, they are not ill, they are dead, surely had he not asked any questions on this matter, that would have made him irresponsable, but he did'nt, he asked, got answer's and acted on that, but you right about us and pet owners always disagreeing
  22. I think you are missing out another category of ferret owner, Stubby, the serious show owner. Those who take loads of ferrets to loads of shows in the hope of coming back with lots of pots. Then if their ferret wins they claim that their offspring come from some sort of fancy champ and charge fancy prices IMO a lot of the demand for fancy colours is created by the show circuit. Just like Crufts popularises different breeds of dog and leads to breeding for extreme and often unhealthy traits oh, Im not missing them at all, they most probably have there own forums to have mass debate

    Help!

I am only active on this one, and thats enough, but seems others do go from one to the other, I do however not let myself be pulled into writing the f word and good repllies I have nothing against, but you reply to a guy, that may only have two jills and one hob, you dont know otherwise as you didnt ask, yet your pulling the genetic debate up again, saying, dont breed from that pairing again, rather than taking a step back, and maybe saying, bad luck, try again, but if it happens a second time with the same pair and same results THEN it could be genetics, but what the heck do I know,
