Another underrated fish on light gear is the mackerel mate, we free line sand eels in the Teign estuary for bass, 5lb line ( or braid) a swivel hook length and hook fished on a match rod... The bass go well but it's mad the fight a mackerel puts up.... Let us know if your ever down this neck of the woods, could get an evening in on the river or bassing...

Well like most UTD fans I'm gutted to see him go, but it had to happen sooner or later... It took him a few years to get UTD as a club being run his way, the bad old habits out and once he had it running properly it became a machine... He has not only produced some of the best teams we've seen in this country, he has made UTD what it is today.... Whoever walks into that job is in a million times better position to the club Fergie inherited.... Good luck to whoever comes in, it'll be tough for anyone to follow him, but surely it's the dream job for any manager...

Nice memories Wilf, I've fished the mouth of the Otter a bit where it comes out at Budleigh, a mate fishes for sea trout on the Otter a lot, I don't do a lot of fly fishing tbh... The bit of tidal Exe I talked about in my post fills up with mullet in the summer, I mean thousands... You could count mullet in the matches but not trout, never made sense to me especially one match where I carefully played in what I was sure was a mullet only to see it was a bloody great brown trout, on any other day I'd have been delighted, I was bloody gutted lol... Mullet go like a train on course gear though, I

Some great old stories lads, it's nice most of us fishermen remember the old ways as our favourite, and I think most of us revert back to that eventually as well.. " learn to fish like Uncle Bill" brilliant lol, the estate I grew up on backs right onto the tidal Exe and my dads house is as close as you can get ( I looked right onto it from my bedroom window). We'd fish for eels with worms or liver ( they seemed to love that) you could also dig little harbour rag in the river mud and we'd catch school bass on big evening tides ( they'd go straight on the camp fire).. If you'd had a bit o

Cheers Craig, I can't wait...

Brilliant mate those are the memories that i have from thst era the seniors always were good to me the match scene was different back then.. I remember the opens on our canal would have over 100 anglers along it, now they're lucky to get 20 and half the matches are on a small club owned puddle.. The old seniors looked after us juniors well, a couple took us up to the south west champs on the River Huntspill in Somerset ( don't know if you know it but its basically a very long straight drain) Phil Coles was our manager lol, he was mad but a good angler ( he took me to a few matches as a juni

Cheers Craig, the wife's uncle and a cousin have boats plus he cousin we're staying with has offered to take me kayaking.. So I'm hoping between them they might put me on a fish or 2 lol... Can't wait to get over I've only been Geurnsey once, but loved it.. And Alderney was a great weekend.. Do you do much shore fishing on Jersey mate or all off the boat??

Your probably right mate, my lad loves fishing (sea or freshwater) but ill teach him how I learnt, the only difference is he's starting on ponds and not the canal, I'll have him on the river though this year ( once it's open) and just fish with him fishing the stick, there's loads of dace and some decent chub to be had that will keep him happy.. I worked in our tackle shop for a while when I was 17, the boss ( Geoff Salisbury) fished all the big matches back then, he'd more often than not take me out of the shop for the day to " give him a hand", I'd make up stick float rigs on the way to Eve

I like Pollack, we get a lot off the wrecks down here... Beer battered and fried not much different to cod, Roll in flour, salt and pepper and fry in the pan with butter, parsley and dill In the oven tinfoil with butter, salt pepper parsley etc Cube it and use it in a fish pie It's a decent alround white fish mate..

How true that is mate, fishing like everything else in life seems to be being lost to the technological world ( I'm not knocking development, but I love the traditional sense of fishing), we would be up before first light to get to the best spots for the bream on our canal, that point when the lights just starting to come and you can see the bubbles and fish turning was magical.. We'd fish Tiverton canal for the tench, again first light and they'd be blowing like hell, you have to right against the Lilly pads to get a bite then it's hold on to keep them out, I was lucky to go to some big mat

Gonna Give Fishing Ago By Myself (Amatuer) Help
NEWKID replied to yorkshirenath's topic in Fresh & Salt Water Fishing
Go and have a walk along the canal mate and have a yap to the lads fishing, watch them a while and see what they're using/ catching etc If its a standard canal start off fishing fairly light and as close to features as you can ( lily lads, rushes, overhanging trees etc) they all hold fish... I prefer fishing a pole on the canal but you could use a float set up, plumb the depth properly, you want to be just on the bottom 9 times out of 10, use maggot or caster and feed little and often a a few maggots every cast, ground bait can be good on lots of canals... If your after perch don't forget the -
You could maybe have a bit of fun down the side of the pier with your ledger rod, fish simple paternoster style rigs ( hooks above the weight) and drop till you touch bottom, fish with hooks from size 8 up to 1's and small strips of fish ( mackeral or herring) rag worm, even mussel or prawns can work.. There should be small wrasse, pollack, coal fish, pout maybe little flatties ( I don't know Whitby pier I'm going on others I've fished)... If there's mullet in the harbour these can be worth a shot on waggler style gear and bread, use mashed bread as a ground air to attract them.. If you've g

Whats Your Favorite Game Dish To Get Out Of The Field??

Venison loin ( better then fillet steak IMO), Fillet out a rabbit, stuff with apricot wrap in cling film, boil for 10 mins then fry in butter with thyme and rosemary... -
Your right Malt, they're both infuriating.. When Nani's on his game he's unplayable.. Unfortunately those games aren't regular enough, Anderson could be quality, but he's not.. I'm looking forward to seeing how Cleverly progresses next season, plus Kagawa has looked a decent player... Add in players like Jones and Smalling and UTD are putting together a decent squad again..

Haha that's a cracker mate, My sister in law was round my parents house having roast once, they had not long been together and she was about 15.. My dad said "do want some horse radish sauce" no way" she replies "that's cruel on horses" lol.. My wife thought a fly drive meant you drive your cars on the plane ( like a ferry) lol

How funny a fanny looking at fannies.... :-) That's more polite than if Craigy was here.... It'd be a "Kunt looking at Kunts" lol

The same here lab, I wrote to David Attenborough when I was at school asking how to get into a career with animals/ zoology etc .. He took the time to write me a letter back, explaining what qualifications etc I would need, the man is a legend in my eyes that proved to me how decent he is.. Unfortunately I realised quite early that my hobbies and career could never pay enough ( I worked in a fishing shop for a while, travelled around to big matches, shows etc, the boss designed rods for Normark and later Carbon tec, I helped with his testing) I loved it but was skint lol Onto the building

Won today 3-1 and last Friday 5-3 ( after being 3-1 down), can't seem to shift the niggly hamstring strain, so I'm reduced to somewhere between a walk and a slow jog lol.. Really enjoying it, back in the centre of midfield and had a little grin today when one of the other team shouted that old boys running it in there.. ( thank god for the 20 year old beside me doing the running).. Good couple of sessions afters as well with the lads, off out to a 40th for an old player tonight.... Roll on next season lol

Well said Malt Chicarito was important to this years success he scored some really important goals, his movement and finishing us up there with the best, unfortunately for him he's at a club with one of the very best in RVP if fit he will always be first choice, and I think RVP's best partner is Rooney.. They play the game differently and make different runs which works.. I really hope Chicarito stays.. But if he has to go with Ronaldo coming in the opposite direction...... Oh well.. Lol Get, Leighton Baines as well

I arranged the trip to Alderney about 10 years ago now, it was brilliant, brother ended up with his pic in sea angler for a big turbot.. Went to Guernsey a few years back for a family wedding but no chance to fish, this time though it will be every day.. Your right Banter it's a lovely place to go.

Sorting the gear out today and I realised I've still got a few Stan Bennet wagglers, in my opinion these were the best floats made... Anyone else use them? Anyone know if you can still buy them?

Dream Fishing by Trevor Housby, that man lived the dream he fished all over the world for everything from trout to marlin... One chapter he was dropped off on an air strip in Mexico waiting for a connecting flight to his fishing destination , he had limited gear with him and a bit of bait, he spent the few hours on the beach beside the air field... He waded out to cast and sat back on the beach and waited, after a few hours a spinner shark took his bait and he managed to beach it... Then he caught his flight to go tarpon fishing, somewhere desolate in mangrove swamps... He paints the picture
