  1. Took mine hunting this week. He was flushing birds and had several retrieves.
  2. Nope they aren’t. Not yet anyway. Very unclear if they will be made illegal or not.
  3. Kibble seems to give mine bad stomach, I even tried grain free and expensive ones ... currently feed BARF which he is better on ... suppose you have to weigh up convenience and performance. Proper diet of meat, fish and eggs, with some filler for a good going dog. My mate feeds something called Power for sled dogs and his spaniels are flying.
  4. First dog I’ve trained mate suppose we learn as we go along eh. What did you do with your old dog and what you do with your new ones? I think I own every training book going lol. I can take my dog out to places with cover but not always game. Gamekeepers / shoots don’t always like you flushing their birds on the shoot ? but I have had the the dog out lately and will get him onto more game as we progress. I have spoken to a bloke who has a rabbit pen with varying cover in it so am planning to take the dog down for a run ??
  5. Why? A good field trial judge told me he’d be worried about a dog that just smashes cover for no reward... he would doubt its intelligence ... however the dog does need to face cover and at pace and with drive if it is going to trial. A good test dog will need to hit cover at times with no scent. I took mine up the woods today and threw several balls into cover where he could see, then kept adding balls to different spots, giving him the prompt to get in. He was going in and hunting round however many times he went in then stopped and stood still just stood there, bu
  6. He’s coming up 20 months mate, I haven’t over faced him with cover. Previously he wouldn’t run into longer grass etc but now he flys through it. But I now need to progress onto thicker stuff again if he is going to trial or even do well at tests then he needs to get in and through it, instead of stopping and standing still when he gets to it.
  7. Any tips you lads have to get a spaniel (springer) very keen to hit cover ... mine will absolutely fly across grass, reedy ground and recently some light bracken but he can be running flat out, gets to cover and stops flat. Ideally I would want him to charge through like he was the reeds etc and not stop at all.
  8. Just wondering, when not on shoot days what kind of exercise and fitness work your gundogs (spaniels ideally) are getting? Are they walked on lead or all free running? How long and how many times a day? I want to get my dog as fit as possible before next season now. Living in the city it’s a bit of a pain as you can’t just jump on the bike with the dog running loose behind.
  9. Your mates a prick, that's not how they work. The dog needs to be basically trained before using one, so it 100,000,000% knows the command so you can re-inforce it. The collar aint for training a dog.
  10. I think you honestly have to consider her working ability. Surprised no one has even mentioned it yet. Is she working to a standard that exceed a lot of other dogs of her breed? does she have any faults? what will she contribute to the breed that you couldn’t find from buying a pup? Don't take offence mate, it’s a serious consideration. Almost everyone with a “working dog” will tell you it’s a great worker but it’s not always the case. On top of that breeding isn’t without its risks. Bitches losing pups, losing the bitch, comp
  11. Thanks mate was in rabbit pen yday and by the end was getting solid contact flushes and the dog sitting up and watching them away
  12. Can anyone advise me their method of getting a spaniel rock solid on the stop whistle even on the flush please? I had mine out this week on a training day, birds were flushing either side of him, just a few feet away, and he sat and watched them shot and retrieved by other dogs no problem. Issue is, when he gets a solid contact flush himself, such as pushing the bird off the end of his own nose, or right past his face, he will break and give chase. So far I have just been running him down, dragging him back to the stop and scruffing him on the spot whilst blowing
  13. You don't need to add carbs you need to add more kcals, easiest from fat. Crack an egg over the meals your already feeding. Add a spoon of oil, add a tin of fish, add some beef dripping or goose fat. Add salmon oil. Just feed a larger quantity of what your already feeding.
  14. A mate and I are trying to do just that, how did you find best to trap and transport them?
  15. Jesus 1/2 mile memory... long walk back if the dog forgets Baz lol
  16. What type of thing you do mate? Just lead walking? What distance / time? Ive not done much with mine previously but he’s coming up 15 months now and needs some more fitness. I was up early this morning and we did a big walk round the block at a brisk pace and then did 3 separate bouts of stopping at some cover and hunting intensely for a bit.
  17. Your supposed to sit in the basket and put the dog on the bike you lemon!
  18. Thats the type I’m after mate what attachment is that? ??
  19. When cycling with dogs, do you use a specialist attachment that goes onto the seat post?
  20. Is this only for running dogs or can it be used for spaniels (or other gundogs) to get into top condition as well?
  21. What you guys doing to get your dogs really fit and ready to go for the season?
  22. I thought it was a bloody leggy cocker don’t worry ?
