  1. Setting the zero at 45 yards? Is this a standard 12 ft-lb rifle or an FAC version? If the former, then that's a wee bit leggy imho. 45 yards is right on the edge of humane kill range for a 12 ft-lb rifle! Course if it's FAC then ignore the above!
  2. Ah I see it's still working then. Every time I see that gun I like it more. Wanna swap? Was the pigeon from the old barn next to the blue house? It really does look like an exact replica of the bunny doesn't it, even got a dark patch at the "muzzle". Maybe the bunny was laid down there first and then moved?
  3. I have helped several loaders over the years, though I've not done any for myself. I've been shooting rifles for 17 years, and cf in differing calibres for almost as long. Most of my early experience was paper punching, long range 7.62 stuff as well as 5.56, all with military ammunition and weapons. I have used plenty of chrono'sm but I've never had to actually buy one for myself, hence I have no idea where to get one, or what they cost in different specs. Your assumption that I "don't know much about them" is wrong. There's a difference between knowing how to use one, and knowing where to
  4. The test is "reasonable cause". Not many clay courses require more than 2 shots at a time, so I'd say that clay shooting would not meet that test. Of course if you can argue it and persuade the FEO then he can vary that, but clay shooting is not automatically reasonable cause to hold. I'd say the chances of getting it granted purely for clays is slim. What argument would you use that you needed a higher capacity for clays?
  5. He asked for advice, and we gave it. Entirely up to him if he decides to take it or not, as long as he gets something that'll do the job he needs it to do, the job's a goodun! I have nothing against develoment, or using unusual calibres, but he specifically asked for something with ready availability and a good choice for reloading, so I gave my opinion.
  6. Does anyone know what chronographs are good? I've had a good old google, and there's b####r all about them on there. If anyone knows where I can purchase one at a reasonable price I'd be grateful. I want to check my air rifles for shot to shot velocity consistency, and to make sure they're not exceeding the legal limit. If possible for a sensible price, I'd also like something that'll handle full bore, .243 mainly, but obviously that's a different ball game so if it's not feasible to measure both with one piece of kit then I'll just stick to the air rifle one. I'd like a chrono that I
  7. There's no "consensus" in firearms licencing mate. It all depends on the flavour of police force you have. I don't know how Northamptonshire are, but whether they decide to open the cert or not is entirely up to them. They are supposed to operate to HO guidelines, but they must be really badly written, as each force seems to interpret them differently. You could argue that they are only guidelines, and that they can change them if the situation dictates, but then you try and get them to do something they don't want to do that might be slightly outside the HO guidelines, and watch them lean on
  8. So you having a mentoring condition on your cert is going to stop you turning batshit crazy, taking the guns out on your own and shooting a load of people? What a load of old tosh! Frankly the tragedy in Cumbria is nothing to do with the firearms licencing people. It doesn't give them carte blanche to slap arbitrary conditions on legal shooters as the whim strikes them! Is your mentoring condition just on the .243, or on the .17 too? With that many rounds fired, I would suggest that you are more than capable of judging a safe shot v's an unsafe one! As far as safety goes, the numb
  9. I'm not liking the sound of THAT! If you're not sure the tool is up to the job of dispatching prey quickly and humanely, then you shouldn't be using it! Stop shooting at living creatures and get the damn thing chronographed!
  10. Good for pest control, but bugger trying to eat bunny that's been shot at that range with a shotty! I'm not that much of a fan of heavy metals in my diet! The quad is a great tool, especially when a decent silencer is fitted. Makes a nice stable base to shoot from too!
  11. 2.4 grains per round? Are you sure?
  12. Any shotgun that is capable of firing more than three times without reloading (normally 2 in the mag and one in the chamber) is a section 1 firearm, and so has to be held on an FAC. As for all weapons, you have to show reasonable cause to hold. Reasonable cause is for you to prove. If you have a farm that is completely over-run with bunnies, then you might prove reasonable cause, but avian pests is more likely to get you the variation.
  13. I'll do the flying, you do the chucking of pointy things!
  14. This type of Yak? Or this type of Yak? N.B. this image is the recommended harpooning position, allows you to miss the prop! Just remember to push away when you want to pull up, or you become a torpedo!
  15. Hunter mate, you seem to be repeating yourself!
  16. I'm going to guess that this little gem of obfuscation:- Is the part of the guidance that the police are relying on to get away with imposing their own arbitrary rules and conditions. I've got over 15 years of rifle experience in different calibres, and the FEO was talking about imposing mentoring on me. Erm... I don't THINK so mr!
  17. Might I suggest getting it chrono'd? Sounds like it might be running more than a little "hot". Why do I never find stuff like this in skips? Sounds like a good restoration project. Sort the stock, grease up all the internals and sort out the metalwork and you'll have a tool to be proud of. Can you put pics up, might be able to identify it properly for you!
  18. Targa. I got the figures from the manufacturers websites, and they are the maximum velocities that they quote. I was making the point that neither of them is suitable for wild boar, even running fully hot. The video on YouTube states that the MV is 1600 fps. I've never fired either of them in FAC guise, so I bow to your knowledge of how they behave. My whole standpoint on this thread has been "do it, if you fancy a slow, painful death being gored to death by an enraged pig!" You have taken what I said and quoted it completely out of context. Are you a Sun journalist by any chance
  19. Are you on commission or something? I prefer to find the point blank range of my rifle, and then limit my shooting to within that range. That way I know that I don't have to worry about hold over/under, or "dialling in" ranges, I just point and shoot. Sometimes it means having to stalk in a little closer, but that's the fun bit isn't it? I wouldn't shoot at a deer at those ranges anyway. Too much chance of wounding, and then taking a while to get to the animal either to start tracking or to dispatch it. Nevertheless, if that's the type of shooting you like, then it sounds like you've
  20. Found a few, all Zeiss at £1000+
  21. The wordig Ive seen on lots of certs includes target practice and zeroing. Add o that the fact that you are approved for any land approved by the police for the calibre of rifle, and the fact that any club range has to be Home Office, and therefore police approved, and you can use the rifle there quite legally!
  22. Depends how long you think the gap will be. Have a word with your FEO they might be able to issue a temp cert to cover the gap. Shouldn't be too difficult to add it to your dads cert.
  23. Movement and straight lines are what gives you away. The idea is to break up the shapes and outlines to make them less recognisable. DPM/camo material attempts to do that by blending with the background in some places but not others, whereas scrim actually physically breaks up the outline, so it's better. Also scrim allows you to add local vegetation, to allow you to blend even better. A sniper using a ghillie suit might change the vegetation in their suit several times in a few hundred meters to blnd properly.
