Or maybe you could beat it to death with the rifle butt?
-
Haha agreed Garfield. Can I come along and film it? Reckon I could sell the footage to one of those "worlds most dangerous" sort of shows for thousands! Clint, I was looking at that site the other day, some rather tasty airguns on there, just don't think I could justify a .50 calibre air rifle in the uk, and don't think I'd be allowed to shoot deer with them!

Doesn't matter where you are, still a bloody silly idea!

Cold. Your understanding of that line and mine seem to differ! I would understand it to mean a round that has a wide range of options for home loading available, NOT one that is primarily home loaded. Even though the 6mm ppc is mainly home loaded due to difficulty finding factory ammunition, I would contend that you will still have a greater range of reloading options with the .243, simply because of the number of people who use it. Yes, the 6.5x55, 6mm ppc, 6m br, .260, .270 etc. etc. etc. are great loads, and work really well, but none offers a significant improvement over the .2

Did you agree that you were happy to accept the mentoring condition on the .22? Of course they can put these conditions on, but if you understood that there wouldn't be that condition, and then they added it, I think you should go back and ask them why they've arbitrarily added it! It's not for them to change policy because of an event like that. The HO and ACPO guidance is still the same, there's no reason for changing how they issue! I might be tempted to have a word with the firearms licencing department of your favourite shooting organisation! I'm waiting for mine to come throu

The .243 has plenty of scope for reloading. I don't really understand what you are trying to infer with that! Pretty much any of the sensible CF deer rounds are readily re-loadable, with good availability of brass and heads in the UK. Some might be more expensive, but none are particularly difficult to get hold of!

Says the man who has a picture of a dead fox in his profile pic! Come on, get it straight!

As long as you have the .223 conditioned for deer! And there is no actual legally binding minimum calibre for boar. The home office RECOMMEND a .270, but it's not binding, and the police can vary at their discretion if there is good reason! I personally would have to think hard before shooting a boar with anything less than a .308. I have never shot a deer with a .243, but I know a few who have, and found it to be a perfectly capable round (this was not in the UK!)

Happy birthday stealthy. How old were you again? 63 you say?

Venom. The rifle he's mentioned runs .22 at 1000fps, so muzzle energy around about 33 ft-lb, manifestly not enough to ensure a good, clean, humane kill in an animal as tough as a boar. The Gamo rifle mentioned is running over 1 1/2 the mv of the one the op proposes to use, so has a far higher ME, around the 85 ft-lb mark. Still not really sufficient I would contend, but a whole heck of a lot better than the 30! As stated earlier, the minimum round in the UK for them is a .243, which will run out around the 1800ft-lb mark, and that is considered marginal! By all means, if you want t

A lot depends on exactly why you're shooting them. If it's for deer management, then you will try and shoot the weaker, poorer, older or sick animals, to improve the stock. Occasionally they will take good animals that are becoming a problem due to feeding habits or location. If someone has paid to shoot a beast, then they will most likely be looking for the best head they can get. These are the types who maybe shoot one or two animals a year, and a stalk is a huge treat (and often a very expensive one at that!). They like to have something to show for the outlay. Of course that's a genera

Those don't look too bad, except for the brown skulls. Personally I like a bit more of a light section on the points, but I guess that's personal opinion. You could probably bleach the skulls back to white, just have to be careful not to get the horn in the bleach, or you end up going round in ever decreasing circles!

The Gamo runs at 1600 fps, the Hatsan at 1000. The guy in that video does just about everything wrong. There is far too much between him and the boar to achieve a consistently clean shot. There's no good backstop..... the list goes on. To shoot a wild boar with a small calibre air rifle is stupid, dangerous and likely to get you hurt. It is also inhumane. You cannot guarantee a quick, clean kill. The animal will most likely be injured enough to enrage it, so it will do a lot of damage to anything around it, and it will be in a lot of pain. I urge you not to try it. It's not fai

Hush! The blood level in my alcohol transport system is getting too high!
-
My advice? Don't even think about it! You're planning on shooting it right where it has most protection. Have you ever seen the neck muscles on a wild boar? What sort of muzzle energy does that put out? The minimum in the UK is the .243, putting out around 1800 ft-lb. A .tt air rifle is going to be running maybe 200 max! The most likely outcome is that you severely annoy it and it decides to take it out on you. I really wouldn't want to be facing down a wild boar with only an airgun as protection. I've done it before, but I had 5 solid 12 bore slugs to call on (and used every one

How will we tell the difference?
-
Sorry Corky, who was that aimed at? If you read my post again, all I said was, either don't look at the posts that you think might offend, or if you DO choose to look at them, play the ball not the man! Getting personal, and "flaming" is sad and childish, whereas no-one minds a decent heated discussion about ethics and such.
-
Depends what you want to shoot. There are as many opinions on the best calibre as there are people shooting! For any UK deer, the .243 takes some beating. Fast and flat, but very little recoil with a decent mod. It'll take down anything you care to shoot in the UK (even wild boar if you're brave). .308 is another popular round. The bench rest guys shoot sub-MOA groups out beyond 600 yards with them. Ditto the 7.62. Obviously you have your metric rounds, 6.5x55, 7mm etc. For availability and cost, I would say the .243 is the best bet. Plenty of reloading kit about, and loads of

Ok, here's a nice, simple suggestion for everyone who is pissing and moaning. The title is pretty explicit, you know what's in there, so if you think it might offend your tender sensibilities, then don't f#####g open it! The man is doing his job, and if he wants to post up the results, that's his perogative. I guess it's your perogative to have a go at him, but I for one find the petty name calling and snidey insults more than a little childish. For sure, call him on it if you don't agree, no problems with that, but the old adage "play the ball, not the man" is apt at the moment. Have

disappearing dead fox...where did it go?
matt_hooks replied to langouroux's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Surely everyone's missing the blindingly obvious. If I leave bunny guts around, or the occasional dead bird, Charlie comes along and cleans up for me. A big dog fox, or even a female, is more than capable of carrying a dead cub away, which would leave vry little blood trail if it had been dead for a while. Of course you'd get the trail of the live fox, but if the dog's trained on blood then it might not follow that. Other option is you're getting old, and forgot where you left it! -
1st ever charlie 2nd ever charlie is a record
matt_hooks replied to mattywhit's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Has the second one got his left leg tucked up with blood on it, or did that .223 do more damage than usual? Nice shooting. It doesn't always come that easy though! Keep up the good work. -
Which is stupid, because if you have a shotgun certificate, you can carry a shotgun in a slip, but not an airgun!
-
OOps, already replied to this topic :icon Dont go for something to eat and reply without reading the topic again_redface: stick with it matt, you will get some permission Ah I have a few good ones, but you can never have enough! Just got my main one cleared for .243, so should be some deer pics, probably some foxes too, in the near future, though the boss doesn't want the foxes clearing on her land as they seem to have eaten their way through the entire bunny population. The next door neighbours, and a couple of the other owners, keep chickens though so charlie should be on the cards

A new load of land handed to you on a plate, AND a wad of SP's, hardly seems fair! Have a couple of permissions in the pipelines, but it's not often one tracks you down! Nice going!

Napier UPH pellets
matt_hooks replied to matt_hooks's topic in Rifle Reviews, Technical Help and Tips
Hmmmm. Just been to the gunshop, and they happened to have a tin of these open. I had a good look, and there didn't seem to be any fouling or swarf. The pellets looked ok. The owner has bunged me the tin for being such a good customer, so I shall pass them through my rifle and see what they do.
