    Aye mate a jill is always a handy addition. Don't go for anything too small though or they can get kicked about by rabbits and find it difficult to shift them. A nice smallish/regular little jill would be ideal, what i would consider 'normal' jill size. Greyhound ferrets are not normaly that small but have a defined curve shaped back which gives them the look of a greyhound, many will debate that this 'type' actually exists. I have a jill that could be described as such, but her litter sister would not be. So who knows. Don't get caught up on colors or names, just look for a good working

    Right - stear WELL clear of angora ferrets, firstly they are about 200 quid and purely for pets. They cannot suckle their own young, have massive genetic problems and should all be destroyed. They should NEVER have been brought into existance and were created to make money from a dopey american pet market. Color is far far far less important than getting a kit from good working lines, look for a decent litter and i'm sure you will find a color that will catch your eye poleys and sandys and a good idea.     All The Best! THe whistling thing is a good idea buuuuuuuuuut doesnt always work due to the depth of the warren etc, but can be really helpful if you lose them above ground also, banging a stick at the hole can bring them out if digging is impossible, apart from that it's just patience. But I really would suggest a locator and the addition of a small but strong type jill to your team, it's nice to have varying tools for varying jobs.

    Right firstly the folk that suggested muzzles or taking teeth out need to be buried in a shallow grave with a .22 slug behind the ear. It's very much not on. To muzzle a ferret leaves in defenseless if it comes up against something a bit tougher than a rabbit - a rat, squirrel or mink perhaps, all of which are often found to ground. Also if you lost them they would starve to death. Snapping teeth off is even worse, how would you feel if i got a pair of pliers and snapped your teeth, it'd f*****g hurt no? Very cruel and it will make your ferrets irritable due to the pain and will eventually lea

    Went out for a wee walk along some public footpaths with the missus and pup today and he found me another seven to ground (lucky i just hapenned to have a ferret in one pocket and some nets in the other ). Thought we had a problem at one point, doing a nice little four holer and heard the scream from below ground near one of the holes stuck my arm right down but couldnt feel anything. Now where we were digging was not going to be a good idea, luckily after a little bit the ferret popped out one of the other holes.     I use a number of different guns of varying barrel length for different jobs. The shortest is an AYA 25 inch, which i find ideal for the quick snap shooting needed for rough shooting, especially when in forestry when a longer barrel can get in the way. I have always used s/s although o/u are in vogue and find that they balance well and are very comfortable to shoot.

    Thanks for the nice comments lads. Aye, to be fair i was chuffed to bits with him, he's been hard work but is coming good.     This afternoon i took my 8 month out for a little mooch about to give him his usual exercise and just to get a bit of fresh air. I decided to head toward a little patch of woodland along the side of a road. It's really small, has never held that many rabbits, but has a few sets scattered about.     Ferret gets stuck in a crack down there or something or behind a dead rabbit and banging gets them out how? They have a place, just shouldn't replace all the old methods. . . . like having patience!

    Very true Mal. I use locators just in case but never have to dig, my jills only kill when they have to which is very rare and come straight out as soon as they have killed. I think the locator has led or derived from (in some ways) a lack of patience. Many folk whip out the locator too soon. . . . . if they waited the ferret would work the rabbit out often, or a second ferret would shift it. I wonder how it effects a ferrets working ability or style always digging to it. As i always wait mine do usually shift the rabbit out, even if they have to drag it out of a stop end by its arse so that i

    It's interesting how sometimes you get silver kits in the same litter as polecats etc and then folk say that the polecat must be the better worker as the silver was bred just for color. Polecat etc ferrets can carry the silver gene or BEW gene.

    Just like anything else it will depend on the dogs used to produce the litter. A GREAT working borzoi crossed with a GREAT working whippet would probably produce decent dogs, but where the f**k are you meant to find a decent working pure borzoi in this country? To be honest with what your working with over here it would probably break if it ran too fast.

    Mine get mainly rabbit. One whole rabbit everyday, mostly gutted but a couple a week ungutted. One whole rabbit is gone before the days out (and the rabbits here are freakishly large monsters) leaving just some skin, a spine, a bare skull and little fur boots. To supplement this they also get pheasant (and other game birds), pigeon, squirrel, venison, trout and day old chicks. I'd definatly advise getting a big box of doc to stick in the freezer, i get a massive box for 8 quid. .. . .. lasts an age. Once in a blue moon they also occasionally get some James Wellbeloved dry ferret food, but i d
