  1. Not if there is f**k all rabbits about There is definatly plenty of quarry around,he has a lot of ground,i think the problem is that people are expecting very big bags, and thats not gona happen on ground thats regulary hunted. People also don't realize you can NEVER guarantee bag sizes, you might get lucky, you might not. How many times have we all been out on what we know is decent land and caught f**k all. The lad should have set it up as a nice holiday cottage with hunting rather than 'hunters paradise' because that conjures up images of land riddled with game, where the f

  5. We all know why herding dogs are used in lurcher breeding, adding mainly intelligence and trainability, but also stamina, good feet and coat etc But i was thinking, how do different types of 'collie/herding dog cross' compare, what differing attributes do they have etc and what are peoples experiences and preferences?
  6. Been stopped for a minor thing and had them looking at the car and said 'ummmmmm just thought i should say. . . . . there's a gun in the boot'. Should see them step back sharpish and reach for the c.s

  8. Bang on the Money Ideation, thats exactly what they do, you have to be very careful working your dog around water with coons they're very apt at drowning your dogs !!!! they'll just clamp around your dogs head, and its all over bar the singing . I don't think many lads appreciate how much of a formidable opponent Racoon's are They are a quarry i would really like to have a chance to hunt! I guess that with time dogs get to know how to handle them? Do you find that different dogs have different ways of working them? Is there a way for the dog to combat their moves or is it just a ca

  10. From what i have heard the big difference is that they can 'wrap around' their assailant, especially around the head, using their claws to great effect.
  11. I like shooting but it's a bit easy isn't it.

  12. I got banned for a week trying to give a decent pup we rescued away to good home for free. As i suggested that i would like to go out for a nights lamping or days ferreting with the person to check thet they were sound, this was deemed a 'dog swap'. When i pm'd the mod that banned me with no warning i was told 'i had been building up to it for a while' and that the mod 'had their reasons' but 'didn't have to explain themselves to me' FREAK!
  13. Was it near a road, could she have been picked up?
  14. I have now become a spun poly convert, best of both words, imo a perfect compromise.
  15. You reckon the keepers have time to take photos on a driven day? I'd love to do a write up on ours but never really have chance to take photos. Maybe i'll try next week.
  16. Spot on mate, i'd go for some small sets, 3/4 holers, worst case then if something really did go tits up which is very unlikely, he could just trench them out. Looking at those ferrets though, they seem pretty attached to the lad so i reckon they would come out anyhow to see what was going on. Locators are all well and good but its the excess stuff that gets me, i used to like sticking a ferret in one pocket and some nets in the other and just wandering where i pleased. Bit more difficult with a spade sticking out your trouser leg. O aye, those nets you sent me are spot on, nice and bi
  17. You reckon he made it to bed? I'm thinking sofa, with arms lovingly wrapped around a half empty can and a wii controller.
  18. OPINEL. Of whichever size suits you. The handle is solid, fits well and durable, the lock works simply and forever and the blade is actually made of decent carbon steel rather than stainless shit so will sharpen to a razor time and time and time again. Also Mora is good but fixed blade with a shit sheath.
  19. Why not go now and keep going. . . . . take the cans with you!
  20. Aye mate i totally agree with you but then if i had some really big hobs which i was fully expecting might well kill in and stick (and he doesn't know because he hasn't used them before) i might be more inclined to use a locator. I only started using a locator couple of seasons ago but to be fair never really have to dig, the old methods of being quiet and patient seem to do the trick. Also the ferrets i currently use seem to get the idea of pushing them out and usually just bite them on the arse. If they wont shift they usually drag them out by the arse. The hobs i have from this years kits l
  21. Lad doesn't have a locator so is worried they will kill in and he might lose them and they are only kits, so i think asking questions is fair enough. By 'take her out of season' i mean just that. She will come into season in spring and will stay that way until either you take her to the vets and jab her, mate her and have kits or best of all mate her with a vac hob which will stop her being in season but will also not result in kits. At this point you would have to remove the entire male. The hobs may fight during this time any way, but may not as they are brothers.
  22. Know the feeling mate the temp is still too high, they are not going to ground much. We had a full day the other day with the dogs and motor on a big estate, checking set after set and found about a half dozen to ground, but plenty of sign, they are still up in the cover. You'd have more luck with terriers and lurchers. Bring on the frost!
