  1. Never even heard or chestnut flour - I'll have a look at that. I vac-packed it all as well sock for good measure?. We had a hasty conversation in the truck while just after they'd been shot but nothing specific ?(not that I look at them or the sport as pound notes but you've got to be practical about things). Normally I just primal cut them but had to bone out the last Roe I took him as the shot smashed the loins to bits? and I had make it worth his while to take it.
  2. Cheers gents, my first time doing faggots so really happy with how they turned out. Might try doing them with venison pluck although not sure whether venison caul is a good idea and I should just use pork? Suck it and see I guess... literally!
  3. After a pretty successful trip down to Dorset on the sika and having filled up the local game-dealer i had to find a home for the excess. A local chef has had roe off me in the past and i tapped him up for a sika prior to the trip and then managed to up-sell him a second... a small catch developed though... they need to be boned out . No problem says I.... Anyway - after the recent hogget I wasn't exactly rusty although I did invest in a couple of new knives and a DICK sharpening tool (which I have to say, is the dogs bollocks) and then got a little carried away.. The first chall
  4. They're not as easy to stack as Roe that's for sure!
  5. Thanks gents - I've always had a hankering to do this sort of thing myself. It's not without elbow grease but very rewarding.... I think the novelty would have worn off if i 6 to do mind!
  6. Yes you have mate thanks - still a few finishing touches required in there but its coming together Its amazing what you can learn how to do on YouTube!
  7. After the success of the store lamb I had last year I was keen to have a got at killing and butchering my own Hogget. A farmer friend and I came to an arrangement and he delivered a cracking 18mth old Ryeland Hogget to me last Monday. It had to be pretty well times as the Mrs isn't a fan of my 'great ideas' and my kids, whilst relatively accepting of my shooting etc, probably wouldn't see the funny side of daddy executing a sheep in the back garden... at least I hope they wouldn't. Swimming lessons to the rescue and I had an hour to get the messy bit done - no sooner had they left in
  8. It was time for a long overdue trip down to my ground in Dorset to cull some sika that were terrorising some sheep - don't know whether it was just pent up frustration or what as the rut is quite far progressed now but they weren't doing themselves any favours. We arrived bang on first light - weather was nice, still and only a little chilly and as soon as we got out the truck we could hear on whistling down on the ground below. We got ready sharpish and set off to an area that had been a favourite spot for them in the past trying not to spook the sheep that occupied all the fields. Tim go
  9. You'll need to get a CPH number etc but I'd highly recommend it. I've just done my second one - had a store lamb first time and just finished making faggots from the trim of a Ryeland hogget today. I was planning on getting a post up on it over the weekend. Good luck!
  10. To give you good idea have a good look about for physical evidence of their presence. Seeing the deer themselves is always a help but getting to know their habits and preferences (feeding, sheltering, couching etc) will only really come with time spent on the ground. Look for browse lines, slots / runs, fraying posts, wallows etc will give you a good place to start. Getting a high seat up overlooking an area with the most traffic and forcing yourself to stay put will test your patience but hopefully pay dividends.
  11. Wait til the French, Spanish and German elections over the next few months.... we'll see who's paying then...
  12. Strewth - that's a monster. Bet the picket looked like a muntjac next to that beast in the chiller! I haven't been on here in a while - glad your still out and at it Rich.
  13. Looks a goodun - I agree that judging from those coronets and his grey face on the other side of prime, hardly going back though.... Just right - nice one.
  14. Nice one George. Have to get you two over mine before the ruts over to have a look about.
  15. Big Cubs - nice going with the rimfire
  16. Nice going - farmer friend that my house backs into asked me to have a go at the crows. About 500 odd on some recent hay cutting and they're starting to bounce on his wheat the next field over. Ff5 sounds the business, I'll need all the help I can get with my cartridge to kill ratio!
  17. Don't take this the wrong way - but personally, unless there are extenuating circumstances, I don't think that 6 months on a range with a .22 and a shotgun should qualify as appropriate experience for a open centre fire license.
  18. Going back I'd say from the front tines - nice pearling, good character & a nice trophy. If you're talking CIC rating the weight might not be quite there although it's hard to say from the pic and the spread looks quite narrow. Good colour and symmetry by the look of things. I used to be like getting heads scored but would now rather place my own value on it - I've plenty of crappy heads with decent stories behind them!
  19. My first colony didn't make it through the winter due to what I assume was exposure as they weren't in the best spot and even seasoned beekeepersin the area said it had been a bad winter for them. Anyway.. I've just been given a strong nuc colony and also a smaller recently captured swarm as a bonus addition. I wasn't expecting the swarm and was originally going to combine the strong nuc with the surplus winter stores my bees didn't use (4x frames of capped honey + a few of drawn Combe) to get them started. Would it be a better idea to transfer the swarm straight into my old hive with all
  20. Didn't hold you back when you were pouring it all over the floor next to my highseat in Scotland did it FD - no wonder it had me puking over the side!
  21. +1 for the 6.5 swede. Easy recoil when moderated and man enough for the bigger stuff without smashing up the roe. The 120/130 grain factory ammo will give you a decent velocity making it flat enough out to most realistic shooting ranges, heavier than that and yes it drops off a bit but just how many shots do you expect to take at long range?? I've shot a red stag at 400m and sika at 250+ which was plenty far enough for me! If the 6.5 didn't exist I'd have a 30.06.
  22. Nice going George - a good clean buck there. Love the sunset pic, can't wait to share moments like that with my lad when he grows up a bit.. that's what it's all about.
  23. Misplaced confidence is what I had Martin... another 6ft further down that slope and we'd have needed a Fendt recovery vehicle... Like a Challenger tank. They are nice tyres on your Toy-Motor mind, mine look like they've been sandblasted clean now!
  24. I know mate - the right gear was mentioned a few times afterwards! There was another 100 meters to go after we rounded that corner as well... And all for a few munties you could have got in your pockets!
