Be a while yet for me sadly... Got to get this damn house fixed first!
-
After seeming to spend most of the weekend messing about I managed to get out this evening and extended an invite to a fella I work with who has a young dog he’s gundog training. He lives near a bit of ground I shoot and his 10 mth bitch was making good progress so I said bring her along if he wanted. It would make a nice change to have the security blanket of a dog to help you find those last light runners! Anyway, we did a bit of walking - the dog saw something I didn’t but I didn’t realise til a roe was bounding away. After that the dog needed another mile to calm itself down! Got

Lucky you didn’t snag yourself on that blade Tim. Nice young animal there.. sounds like that area will be worth another visit.

I wish it was my land! I’ve got the permission on it, rabbits along the lower hedge line which I have a crack at every now and then. Always tempting just before work when I’m brushing my teeth and I can see them hopping about! Quite a few pheasants about as well but I don’t shoot them encourage them with a feeder. Reckon it’s important my son sees and appreciates it’s not about fragging everything you see. I did raise and try to release some white ones to roam with them but the bloody rats got them.

Our upstairs loo has a great view of a sitty tree and, another 15 meters or so back, some power lines so every time I’m at home doing some chores I’ve always got one eye on the window. Could have had a lot more shots had I had the time but the five times I did pick up the HW100 all counted?.

Yep.... I’ll be doing these again?
-
Not yet mate - only finished them an hour ago. A day or so in the chiller should see them plump up and get the flavours through them.

Heard people have been getting more creative with pheasants and as I had a few brace in the chiller wanted to have a go at sausages. I had half a bag of complete mix left over from some venison ones I’d done a week or so back (chilli and coriander) so thought what the heck... 2 kg pheasant breasts 1 kg 70/30 VL pork belly Bunch of fresh coriander. Handful of soft apricots 650 grams of complete sausage mix 750mil cold water Natural hog casings. I chopped the apricots into quarters and put them through the mincer along with the meat. I added the ch

Unfortunate predictive text fail! Can’t seem to edit my post.

I bet it felt big enough when you were bragging it out along with the treestand and your other gear! The shot placement is unfortunate but you didn’t screw up - the deer is still dead and in the back of your truck. Nice work.

Had a the last hour of light spare on Saturday so hopped in the Landy and popped to a local farm a few minutes away. It’s split into two small blocks with a short drive in between, there are roe at both but the first place has the pasture let to a shepherd who rotates the grass quite regularly making it bloody hard to second guess what’s go be to be where! Anyway, spent too long at the first place knowing full well it was a waste of time (but for some reason doing it anyway) making the visit to the second place a bit of a rush. Got to my favourite observation spot and waited - hadn

Finding homes for shot birds
Yokel Matt replied to Jarvis's topic in Gamekeeping, Conservation & Shoot Management
The BASC magazine has an article on Willow game which charges a annual retainer (or some thing like that) and then a further price per bird to guarantee an outlet for the shoot. Fair play to Willow game for coming up with that one but surely given all the publicity about people having to resort to food banks you’d have thought this would be a great opportunity for BASC to try and promote some sort of network to stop the waste and counter the argument that the antis seem so keen to promote! -
Too true that bud - keep them down... but not out. A hard line to tread when everything else it trying to get them as well. Good luck with the neighbouring ground - having a reference next door gets you halfway there?
-
Requirements: Outside toilet Sack of chicken feed Totally accidental but that’s three less of the buggers I have to worry about! Plus they all went in one flush.. I’ve had turds that were harder to get rid of!

Such a shame - Almost seems to be an annual event that I start thinking I have the rabbits a good seeing to only to find I’m a few weeks too late and mixi has done it for me. Lucky enough to back onto permission of open fields behind my house, got this fella a couple of days ago with the HW100 with the early signs of it. one thing I’d always say about rabbits is don’t go too easy on them thinking you’ll preserve sport for another day. Either you’ll get them, someone else will... or mixi will come and do your job for you!

I’m having the same trouble - baiting was getting so expensive I felt I was either feeding the entire postcode or they were simply immune. At least trapping them gives you some sense of progress .
-
Quality - you’ve probably still got the aching legs and stiff shoulders to help remember the evening!

Best result all round - both the beast concerned and your relationship/ reputation with the estate owner.

Couple Weekends Ago In Dorset
Yokel Matt replied to Squirrel_Basher's topic in Deer Stalking & Management
Cheers for the reminde Tim - it was a hell of a result after a windy washout of a day. It got to the stage where it was doubtful wed even see a deer let alone one that was shootable. Heard a bit of whistling but nothing too committed. Towards the end of the day we spotted the stag you see on the right of the pic some fair way off that went to the middle of a field and couched up. Got to within 400m of it which was a close as possible without being in plain sight and had to hatch a mission impossible style approach to get within shooting range. Got to within 170m away getting scratched and stun -
With AOLQ I'd have thought you'd be fine mate. I wouldn't take advise on here as gospel though, you'll only know for sure by calling up your Northumbria licensing officer.

Great buck - George is a cool customer on the deer and a very good shot. 100m of sticks on anything isn't a certainty and on a animal like that he did himself proud.
-
Some great posts on here - some of you fellas are really getting into them. Apologies if the question has been asked recently but do any of you sell your birds to a dealer and if so what's the going rate for a bird in the feather?
