  1. Had my first crack at reloading today after spending ages staring at the kit and fretting. The aim was start the development of a load for my 6.5x55. The ingredients were Lapua brass, CCI benchrest primers, Vihtavuori N160 and Barnes 120 grain TTSX. I was hoping for an MV of around 2800 and figured this would be phase one of a long road. There were several false starts on the run up to today due to not having little but essential bits of equipment. Needless to say this gave me more time to research which only served to get me totally bloody confused as the data seemed to vary depend
  2. Cheers fellas - yeah the rats were frustrating as they didn’t like the lamp at all. Had one good stand by a pile of tyres where I cleaned out 6 or 7 in a few minutes. The pics don’t do justice to the size of some of them.. mind you I also shot one not much bigger than my thumb... it went pop?
  3. I can imagine... thanks an easy £80-100 magically turned into 50ps worth of scrap metal?. I’ve got a set of the seeland/ decoy ones but the yoke’s seem to want to loosen themselves the more you open / close them... a basic but important design floor as you’d have more chance shooting freehand when they’re loose.
  4. Ohh know, gutted! I’m a total convert now, mine were a bloody nightmare at first but turns out they were a bit lose... after a ratchet up they’re great now. This Charlie was headshot at 130m away and reckon I could have done it all day long.
  5. Out with the HW100 last night to thin some barn doves out and have a go at some rats as well. Shooting the doves was pure control.. you couldn’t call it sport as the helpless buggers were like cans on a wall and I had 10 on the floor in two minutes, followed by another 6 shortly after. Picking the buggers around lumbering cattle in the barn wasn’t much fun but they couldn’t be left there. Next... rats.... had every intention of a bag shot but the floor was like poo-soup so they could bloody stay where they fell! Had a few on the run and probably had a dozen in total.
  6. Light drizzle in Wiltshire yesterday... the sort that gets you soaking wet without you noticing & plays hell with your scope and bins. The fields were properly soaking as well where we tried so it was hard going. The first place we tried was where I got a brace a few weeks back out of 9 we saw there. Sure enough a brace was in the same place but this time after a carbon copy stalk the wind changed direction and they were off. Next place was a long slog through wet fields, eventually rewarded with the sight of 3 roe right out in the middle of a big, big field... two does and a b
  7. On the subject of sticks Ive got those quads working now? needed a fair ratchet up though! I’ll stick a few more rounds in the car as well mate?
  8. Yes bud - 6.5x55. Forgetting to take something makes a change for me... forgetting to bring it back however is pretty standard! Sticks and knives are cost me a fortune.
  9. Another hectic weekend with the family and with an hours light to spare bundled my gear I into the truck. Arrived at the ground 20 mins later and realised I hadn’t refilled my bullet pouch since the last trip and only had 1 round left! What a muppet - less haste, more speed! There wasn’t time to head back home so it was either make the one round count or sack it off. I chambered the solitary and was content to have a slow wander around the hedgerows without any expectations of using it unless something happened to fall into my lap. In the second field there were two roe couched on th
  10. Two nice carcasses for the game dealer looking judging the shots on the keepers. That poor doe looked in a desperate condition, good work.
  11. That’s ace mik, really nice scenery and a great result. Not doubt the mild weather made it hot work getting them off the hill.
  12. Looks like the it did the job although I guess that weight limits your options a bit. That said you’ve got a good dog on hand should you need it.
  13. Visited Tim at the weekend from my first stalk of 2018.. first trip out for a while come to that. First field of the first place we looked we found 7 roe couched against a hedge and had just formulated a stalk plan when a f***ing long dog came haring round a barn right up to us and started jumping about in full sight of the deer before running back to its owner who was tinkering with a car. The deer had seen the dog before by the look of things as they fecked of quick smart. It looked like game over but giving the field another scan revealed 3 more roe further up the hedge, two does and
  14. Several birds in the game cart with the same beak deformities.
  15. A mincer mate - quite a large plate size as well to give it a bit more texture (6mil I think) as I’ve found the smaller ones makes it a bit like paste.
  16. I use a pre-mix for sausages, cranberry & port is a good one although the dried fruit can sometimes be a bit on the hard side. Spotted some fresh cranberries at the farmers market and as I had some venison in the chiller thought I’d pep up the usual recipe by adding fresh fruit and real plonk. You can taste the difference ?.
  17. Id be glad of anything with a nose when following up a wounded deer in cover.
  18. Both were chest shot and were oblivious beforehand, the pale one made 10m or so not much more. I thought it might be something to do with it being both a younger animal and hanging them in the skin but never noticed it this much before. Either way I’m keen to avoid it as it’s not very attractive for the chefs I’m selling it to.
  19. Every day is a school day so hopefully the answer to this is obvious. Please enlighten me. The roe in the left was a yearling follower hung in the skin for a week. It was skinned on the same day as the roe on the right, an adult doe, skinned on the day it was shot. The picure was taken the following day. Why the hell does one look like Venison and the other like Michael Jackson?!
  20. Feckin stink as well - I got desperate as used poison for the ones that got trap shy in the attic. Solved the problem but by Christ does it smell up there... and the flies coming down through the light fittings?? blahhhh!
  21. A hard days fun you’ve had there Rich. A nice hot toddy in front of the fire and those aches won’t feel quite so bad?. Saying that my mate who dragged that 40lb roe deer a few meters up a hill was walking like he’d been hit by a car this morning?
  22. That’s where I went wrong - I’d have had two if I’d paid more attention to the dog I expect. Nice going this morning Rich ?
  23. Probably just as well I can’t shoot from the seated position or I’d spend all day in there!
  24. I was cynical to be honest as I’m ashamed to say I’m not a massive fan of pheasant. These were really very tasty, even my kids we’re tucking into them.
