.223 Or .243 For Lamping Foxes
charlie caller replied to DeerhoundLurcherMan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Does the open ticket only apply to stalking in scotland? Or do they have an open ticket in England as well? because a great majority of Scottish land is not passed by the police there, so in order to shoot there, you would have to have it open, but I will bet you a pint or two that they are not allowed to fire a single bullet, on English soil, unless its passed. -
17 Winchester Super Magnum
charlie caller replied to shottyscotty's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Haha not considering you can reload the vastly superior .22 hornet for about 20 pence a bang they wont, another "trendy" must have cartridge, that will be difficult to give away in a few years. -
What good advice to put on a public forum, well done, dullard.

Dont think you will go wrong there mate, they are an exact Mauser k98 copy so the action is well proven, go for it, you could always have a trigger job done and have it glass bedded, for a nominal fee, as they are cheap enough to buy and spend a bob or two on, good choice on .222 mate, brilliant calibre.

Steel Shot With Winchester 1200?
charlie caller replied to IanS's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
To use high performance steel it must be proofed with the fleur de lys symbol, dont use bismouth it is shite mate, tungsten matrix or heavy shot is the best, expensive, yes, effective? Very, just buy a box of ten which wont break the bank, and pick your shots, if you hit em with either they will come down, I would not bother with steel unless you can use high performance stuff, you will wound more than you kill, trust me on the tungsten///heavy shot, and I hope you enjoy your first trip. -
I was looking at one in a local shop not long back and ended up chatting to a keeper who has one in .270 and he said it was a very good rifle, accurate and well made, very similar quality to CZ and if its a .222 it will be spit accurate, they always are mate. And I do know a bit about their shotguns, they are pretty good never owned one but borrowed one once and quite liked it.

.223 Or .243 For Lamping Foxes
charlie caller replied to DeerhoundLurcherMan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I presume you mean red foxes? As a .22-250 is not legal on red deer. -
Nice mate, glad you showed him the superiority of the smaller calibre, .177 wins everytime for me.

.223 Or .243 For Lamping Foxes
charlie caller replied to DeerhoundLurcherMan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Yes but if they wont pass the ground for .243 he can put down whatever he likes, he still wont get a .243, and if he is only shooting foxes, and has no intention to shoot larger deer, then a .22 centerfire is the perfect tool, putting down .243 because you fancy one is not good reason, you have to justify the need for the calibre, if the ground was already passed for .243 then you might stand a chance, but if you need to get it passed, and no deer are present, you are looking at a .22 cf, what about a .17rem .223 necked down to .17, 4000+fps and deadly out to 300 yards? -

It is also down to what the ground will be passed for, if its not got deer on it, I think you can forget a .243, you will be steered down the .22 centerfire route in all probability. -

charlie caller replied to DeerhoundLurcherMan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
So what calibre (if any) is your ground passed for? If you have deer on your ground .243 is a possibility, having said that, I know a lad who had his .243 conditioned for fox only, he now has deer on it, but it shows it can be done, dont ask you dont get mate, simples. -
Wanted Permission To Fly Hunt My Harris Hawk Essex And Suffolk
charlie caller replied to Bells face's topic in Falconry
Well when a man puts up a post saying "permission to fly MY Harris hawk" it kind of gives the impression that you have got one, would you agree? I am glad that door knocking has got you some land, and I take my hat off to you for getting out and trying, if more people did that we would not have so many on here trying to freeload on other peoples permissions, well done. -
.223 Or .243 For Lamping Foxes
charlie caller replied to DeerhoundLurcherMan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I know mate, a pal of mine has one and it is loooovly, so accurate, quiet, and deadly, and it held the benchrest record for years and years, and the difference in velocity? very little, like all super accurate rounds the secret is to reload them, accuracy beats power everytime. -
.223 Or .243 For Lamping Foxes
charlie caller replied to DeerhoundLurcherMan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
.If the gods chose a cartridge, it would most likely be .222, phenomenally accurate round, and almost impossible to mess up reloading for, a cool as fu-k case with that long neck, in my opinion, outshines a .223 on accuracy, if I was to have another rifle to shoot foxes and small deer with, along side the .243, .222 would be very close to the top of the list, along with .220 swift and .22-250. -
Sorry to hear that Milo, chalk this year down to experience, and start afresh next year, have a bit of time off pal, and get your enthusiasm back over the next few months, atb, shit happens, but you dont have to like it mate.

Wanted Permission To Fly Hunt My Harris Hawk Essex And Suffolk
charlie caller replied to Bells face's topic in Falconry
Why would anyone get a bird without having permission on some decent land? It should be the first consideration, buying an air gun and then going and finding land is not a problem, it can sit in the wardrobe for the next twenty years if need be, but a hawk needs to be flown several days a week on quarry, it is this kind of thing that puts falconry in a bad light, to the op where do you fly your bird now? If you have no hunting land, how do you hope to get it fit enough to hunt? -
So give us an update Milo, have you solved the problem mate?

New Stock And Bedding My Tikka T3
charlie caller replied to HerneTheHunter's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Nice job pal, let us know if it shoots, I keep considering bedding my Weatherby action into the Boyds stock, but being as it shoots ragged one hole groups with homeloads I wonder if its worth it? But we shall see. -
.223 Or .243 For Lamping Foxes
charlie caller replied to DeerhoundLurcherMan's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Get a .22-250 mate, it has nearly as much umph as a .243 and you are more likely to be granted one for fox alone. -
Waht would it cost you for say a wheel bearing? Or Head Gasket? Set of Brakes? Admittedly, sound like you got not a bad deal there tho Well I will answer that for him, he wont be needing them very often so its irrelevant really, and he wont need track rod ends or a new steering box every mot either.

Tikka T3 Super Varmint .223 Twist Rate ?
charlie caller replied to Tornado1979's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
Why would he need anything heavier than a 55gn bullet if he is shooting foxes? And he has not said he is reloading, so correct me if I am wrong, but I dont think specialist 70- gn stuff is available commercialy here in the UK. -
Mate it can be difficult at first, I have always found that if you lead the rabbit(assuming its going side to side) with the beam, just a little, as if you were shooting it with a shotgun, the bird tends to get ahead just a tad more and grabs the head, rather than the arse, which might not be the end of the world with a female harris or a redtail, but with a male harris its going to get dragged around rodeo style, keep at it and it will come together.

Wanted Permission To Fly Hunt My Harris Hawk Essex And Suffolk

Also did you not have permission lined up before you bought your bird? If not that was rather foolish.
