So, Tell Us, What Are Ye All At In The Veg Garden?
Nik_B replied to JohnGalway's topic in Living Off The Land & Game Cooking
We were inspired by your and others posts on here to get cracking on I am really enjoying seeing this take life and we're treating this as a test run. I think you are right about another greenhouse or maybe a poly tunnel where the makeshift raised bed is for next year. We have a septic tank on the other side of the garden, is it a problem to grow veg near it? I think Rhubarb under the trees in the corner will do well plus a compost heap there. -
Pretty sure it's a female red breasted merganser and a cormorant Nick.... Thanks, it was quite interesting to watch it feeding, I think next time I go over there I'll go on my own so I'm not rushed and take the tripod with me.

Done about 10 hours solid work in the garden, mostly just strimming, chipping and cutting back. We're making progress -

Your tomatoes are storming ahead Terry, ours are just flowering but the courgette and cucumber are doing great and we're already picking some -
I don't think I made any posts about socialisation so we might have crossed wires? what you are describe is exactly what we're aiming to do, many of my Labs problems were a result of 'socialisation' and living in a city where he really was putting his gumshields in before every walk so we're not making that mistake again and partly why we now like in a rural location. I avoid places where there are a lot of dog owners because I fail to see what good can come of throwing my dog in to the ring with other dogs that we don't know. We go to very quiet places and spend all our time having the d

Oyster Catcher.....I'd never seen one till a few years ago but it's a running joke with the wife and I now...."Oh it's just an Oyster Catcher" Striking birds, not sure where the turnstones are at the moment, they should be about!

Sounds like heaven If you ever cross the waters to Anglesey and fancy shooting some clays let me know....I don't know what I'm doing either -
I'm not a happy camper, my photos are all coming out like crap. I have these two which aren't particularly good but is this a Grebe and a Shag?

Can you tell me much they charge?

Hi Casso Can you please clarify what you mean about what I have said please? With 'socialisation' I mean I don't agree with letting my dogs socialise with other dogs I don't know or at very least not without my close supervision is a situation where I don't know the owner and don't know the dog. I have had to deal with too many problems which has often resulting in my Lab being attacked and I don't see the benefit of having other dogs I don't know run up to mine. I am happy to let the pup play with another dog once I can gauge the other dog a little, I can predict a bad encounter with the

Blimey it's like Day of the Triffids in the greenhouse I can't believe how fast everything has come on! Our lettuce is getting decimated by something, there are lots of small holes in the middle of the leaves, not being munched on from the edges, that isn't slugs is it? -

Thanks Jok I am not trimming I am going to be cutting right back and decimating in places as this garden has been left to run wild for a few years. I have another holy which is almost a tree so that has to go, like the last one I will cut a hole in and get in there to have a look and see if there are any nests but I would imagine they have all flown the nest by now. I recon we should be in the clear but thought I'd check since I am no expert. -

Is it a light gun? I used to have a fancy grade 5 Miroku but got rid of it, I now have a knackered old Harrier Delux which cost 120 quid but I love it and have had some of the best shooting a man can ask for with it including snipe and woodcock. It has a bulge in the barrel and is probably not safe to shoot with anymore but I will either get it repaired or fix a replacement identical but it will stay with me for ever My mate swears by his Beretta but it's very subjective, you need to have find something that really suits you. I don't know what it is about pigeons but I always got -
Nice pic Malt, a few years back we had a guy come to South Manchester and do a display in the local park with his birds, and he explained about using them for pest control and hunting which is rare to hear in a city. Saw a couple of tiny wrens today, went back out with the camera and the place was like a graveyard lol

Got the strimmer back and getting on top of things, chipper was fired up for the first time today, it's great, for a while I wasn't sure if it was overkill but there is no way I could dispose of our garden waste with once every two weekly green bin collections, I've been burning and cutting a single giant holy bush for weeks and I cannot get rid of the waste even using the neighbours bins. The wife has picked some cucumber and courgette for a salad, the lettuce is being decimated by caterpillars (I think?) and slugs but everything else is going well, we have some raspberries on the new bu -

Is that yours Malt? There's a place that does hawking days near us, I'd love a day out to see what they do. They even do it from horse back (not for me lol) but the wife & daughter might be up for it as they both ride.

The brown trout were transported around the world by packing there eggs in barrels of moss I believe. That's interesting to know, we Europeans are a clever bunch when we put our minds to it I just always thought of Sea Trout as a separate species of fish until I did a bit of googling

I know that feeling mate! My job is also very erratic and we got suddenly very very busy in the last few months, I work nights so even when I get 2 days off it's a struggle to get my sleeping patterns sorted so I can have a full day in the garden, add to that we have been inundated with visitors which has just eaten the time up, we're actually banning anyone from coming down for the next month. It'll be worth it in the end
